Type-dependent biostimulant-mediated induction of nutrients and phenolic compounds improved plant tolerance against canola aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae L.).

The canola aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae L.) is a global threat to the production of canola. Field studies on the mechanism of biostimulants-driven plant tolerance against canola aphids are either scare or inconclusive. To assess the potential of biostimulants-salicylic acid (SA) and citric acid (CA)-in conferring induced resistance against canola aphids, two-year field experiments were conducted. The 0, 0.5, and 1 mM concentrations of each biostimulant were compared to an insecticide (Carbosulfan 20 EC) and infested control groups. Aphid abundance decreased by 19.3 % (1 mM SA), 16.3 % (0.5 mM

Overexpression of Calcineurin B-like Interacting Protein Kinase 31 Promotes Lodging and Sheath Blight Resistance in Rice.

A breakthrough "Green Revolution" in rice enhanced lodging resistance by using gibberellin-deficient semi-dwarf varieties. However, the gibberellic acid (GA) signaling regulation on rice disease resistance remains unclear. The resistance test showed that a positive GA signaling regulator DWARF1 mutant d1 was more susceptible while a negative GA signaling regulator Slender rice 1 (SLR1) mutant was less susceptible to sheath blight (ShB), one of the major rice diseases, suggesting that GA signaling positively regulates ShB resistance. To isolate the regulator, which simultaneously regulates rice

Ectopic and transient expression of VvDIR4 gene in Arabidopsis and grapes enhances resistance to anthracnose via affecting hormone signaling pathways and lignin production.

BACKGROUND: DIR (Dirigent) proteins play important roles in the biosynthesis of lignin and lignans and are involved in various processes such as plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, there is less information about VvDIR proteins in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L). RESULTS: In this study, we used bioinformatics methods to identify members of the DIR gene family in grapevine and identified 18 VvDIR genes in grapevine. These genes were classified into 5 subfamilies based on phylogenetic analysis. In promoter analysis, various plant hormones, stress, and light-responsive cis-ele

The status of fertility control for rodents-recent achievements and future directions.

Management of overabundant rodents at a landscape scale is complex but often required to sustainably reduce rodent abundance below damage thresholds. Current conventional techniques such as poisoning are not species specific, with some approaches becoming increasingly unacceptable to the general public. Fertility control, first proposed for vertebrate pest management over 5 decades ago, has gained public acceptance because it is perceived as a potentially more species-specific and humane approach compared with many lethal methods. An ideal fertility control agent needs to induce infertility ac

Identification of copper (Cu) stress-responsive grapevine microRNAs and their target genes by high-throughput sequencing.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of single-stranded non-coding small RNAs (sRNAs) that are 20-24 nucleotides (nt) in length. Extensive studies have indicated that miRNAs play important roles in plant growth, development and stress responses. With more copper (Cu) and copper containing compounds used as bactericides and fungicides in plants, Cu stress has become one of the serious environmental problems that affect plant growth and development. In order to uncover the hidden response mechanisms of Cu stress, two small RNA libraries were constructed from Cu-treated and water-treated (Control) leav

Chestnut resistance to the blight disease: insights from transcriptome analysis.

BACKGROUND: A century ago, Chestnut Blight Disease (CBD) devastated the American chestnut. Backcross breeding has been underway to introgress resistance from Chinese chestnut into surviving American chestnut genotypes. Development of genomic resources for the family Fagaceae, has focused in this project on Castanea mollissima Blume (Chinese chestnut) and Castanea dentata (Marsh.) Borkh (American chestnut) to aid in the backcross breeding effort and in the eventual identification of blight resistance genes through genomic sequencing and map based cloning. A previous study reported partial chara

Multidimensional role of selenium nanoparticles to promote growth and resilience dynamics of Phaseolus vulgaris against sodium fluoride stress.

High fluoride (F) concentrations negatively affect the seed germination, plant growth, development, and yield of crops. Phaseolus vulgaris L. is an F-sensitive crop frequently grown on marginal lands affected by F salts. Selenium (Se) is a vital elicitor of the antioxidative enzymes involved in scavenging free radicals to alleviate abiotic stress. Recent studies have demonstrated that engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have the potential to induce tolerance to abiotic stress in plants. Phytosynthesis of NPs is a novel and sustainable approach to mitigate abiotic stresses. The present study was int

Dynamic transcriptomic and metabolomic responses to seed germination in Luffa cylindrica.

Seed dormancy is a critical agronomic trait that affects uniform germination and seedling establishment in Luffa cylindrica. In this study, we performed phenotypic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses on two contrasting Luffa cylindrica materials: Z-184 and Z-114. Phenotypic evaluation revealed that compared with Z-114 seeds, Z-184 seeds exhibited significantly lower germination potentials and germination rates. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the DEGs were predominantly associated with plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling, and metabolic pathways. Metabolomic profiling

Dual Repression by IPA1 Fine-Tunes OsbZIP79-Mediated Salt Tolerance in Rice.

Soil salinity severely impairs rice yield and quality, yet the molecular mechanisms of its salt tolerance remain unclear. In this study, we first discovered OsbZIP79, a novel basic leucine zipper (bZIP)-type transcription factor, as a positive regulator of salt tolerance in rice. We uncovered that OsbZIP79 positively regulates the expression of OsHAK26 (encoding a potassium transporter) and OsMPG1 (encoding a mannose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase) to confer salt tolerance in rice. In vivo and in vitro evidence demonstrate that OsbZIP79 physically interacts with Ideal Plant Architecture1 (IPA

PgZHD18-PgWDR5b increases basal thermotolerance in Physalis grisea by lignin biosynthesis dependent on H3K4me3.

Physalis grisea is a widely valued orphan crop with medicinal properties and edible functional fruits. Under global warming, high temperature stress (HTS) severely restricts the growth and development of P. grisea, while the epigenetic regulatory mechanism underlying its HTS response remains largely unclear. In this study, we identified the ZINC FINGER HOMEODOMAIN (ZHD) transcription factor PgZHD18 as a positive regulator of basal thermotolerance in P. grisea. Functional assays showed that PgZHD18 enhances basal thermotolerance by improving ROS scavenging capacity, alleviating membrane damage,

Suppression of ZmJAZ12 Expression Modulates Jasmonic Acid and Salicylic Acid Signalling and Enhances Maize Resistance to Southern Corn Rust.

Southern corn rust (SCR), caused by the biotrophic fungus Puccinia polysora, severely threatens maize yield worldwide. In this study, we identified ZmJAZ12, a member of the JASMONATE ZIM-domain (JAZ) protein family, as a negative regulator of SCR resistance in maize. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) and expression analyses revealed that the expression level of ZmJAZ12 was negatively correlated with SCR resistance, and the resistant haplotypes exhibited significantly lower transcript abundance of ZmJAZ12. The ZmJAZ12 overexpression (OE) lines showed enhanced susceptibility to SCR, while ZmJ

Evolutionary analysis of the Dof family in plants and identification of its members in tobacco.

DNA-binding with One Finger (Dof) transcription factors are plant-specific regulators involved in diverse biological processes, including growth, development, and stress responses. However, the Dof family in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) remains poorly characterized. Here, we performed a genome-wide identification and comprehensive analysis of Dof genes in tobacco, revealing 75 NtDof members. Through phylogenetic reconstruction, gene structure analysis, and cis-regulatory element prediction, we classified these genes into seven subfamilies and found that the CDF clade exhibits conserved exon-

Screening of Comprehensive Panel of Cultivated and Wild Vigna Species for Resistance to Pulse Beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L.

Pulses are a key source of dietary proteins in human nutrition. Despite several efforts to increase the production, various constraints, such as biotic and abiotic factors, threaten pulse production by various means. Bruchids (Callosobruchus spp.) are the serious issue of concern, particularly in storage conditions. Understanding host-plant resistance at morphological, biochemical and molecular levels is the best way to minimize yield losses. The 117 mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) genotypes, including endemic wild relatives, were screened for resistance against Callosobruchus chinensis; a

Tenualexin, other phytoalexins and indole glucosinolates from wild cruciferous species.

In general, the chemodiversity of phytoalexins, elicited metabolites involved in plant defense mechanisms against microbial pathogens, correlates with the biodiversity of their sources. In this work, the phytoalexins produced by four wild cruciferous species (Brassica tournefortii, Crambe abyssinica (crambe), Diplotaxis tenuifolia (sand rocket), and Diplotaxis tenuisiliqua (wall rocket)) were identified and quantified by HPLC with photodioarray and electrospray mass detectors. In addition, the production of indole glucosinolates, biosynthetic precursors of cruciferous phytoalexins, was evaluat

Reproductive Biology of Rheum webbianum Royle, a Vulnerable Medicinal Herb From Alpines of North-Western Himalaya.

Information on reproductive biology and pollination ecology studies of threatened plants are essential to develop strategies for their sustainable utilization and effective conservation. As such, these studies were conducted on Rheum webbianum, a high-value "vulnerable" medicinal herb of the north-western Himalaya. This species presents a unique mode of reproductive behavior through the involvement of different floral events, including the movement of reproductive organs. The plants survive extremely cold conditions through underground perennating rhizomes that sprout into juvenile shoots with

QTL Mapping of Heat Tolerance in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) at Adult Stage.

Heat stress during cucumber production often leads to sunburn of leaves, growth retardation of stems and roots, fruit malformation, and even plant death, which have a great impact on the fruit quality and yield. However, no studies on the genetic inheritance and quantitative trait locus mapping of heat tolerance in cucumber at the adult stage have been reported yet. In this study, a set of 86 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from "99281" (heat-tolerant) and "931" (heat-sensitive) were used to identify the heat tolerance QTL in summer 2018, 2019, and 2020. Eight-week-old plants were expo

Effects of short-term salt stress on photosynthetic characteristics, physiological metabolism, and ion homeostasis in soybean seedlings.

BACKGROUND: Salt stress is a major abiotic stress limiting soybean production, with the seedling stage being the most salt-sensitive period. Elucidating the growth, photosynthetic, and physiological response mechanisms of soybean seedlings to salt stress holds significant theoretical value for breeding salt-tolerant cultivars. METHODS: In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of varying NaCl stress intensities (0-160 mmol⋅kg⁻¹) on plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant physiology, and ion homeostasis using a salt-tolerant cultivar (Zh
