Pontocerebellar hypoplasias (PCH) represent a heterogeneous group of very rare disorders with reduced volume of pons and cerebellum. The term is purely descriptive and does not imply a genetic progressive disease. Currently (as of Jan 01, 2020), 13 different types are listed in OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man), associated with 19 different genes. However, a large group of similar imaging patterns is known, and it is unclear why some are labeled as PCH, while others are not. The latter include CASK- and VLDLR-associated disorders, some tubulinopathies, certain dystroglycanopathies, a …

Several studies have used a variety of neuroimaging techniques to measure brain activity during the voiding phase of micturition. However, t … e studies reported 117 foci for ALE analysis. Our ALE map yielded six clusters of activation in the pons, cerebellum, insula, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), thalamus, and the inferior frontal gyrus. Regions of the brain involved in executive control (frontal cortex), interoception (ACC, insula), motor control (cerebellum, thalamus), and brainstem (po …

Objective Brainstem arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare lesions with a high risk of intracranial hemorrhage and are challenging to t … s were in the midbrain in 10 patients (one anterior and nine posterior or dorsal), in the posterior pons in two and pontomedullary in one. Complete occlusion was achieved in three patients. Gamma knife radiosurgery was performed in six patients who were near-completely or partially embolized. Postoperative complications, including five cases of ischemi …

Structural and functional interconnections of the bilateral central vestibular network have not yet been completely delineated. This include … tibular pathways were identified: three run ipsilaterally, while the two others cross either in the pons or the midbrain. Two of the ipsilateral projections run through the posterolateral or paramedian thalamic subnuclei, while the third bypasses the thalamus to reach the inferior part of the insular cortex directly. Both contralateral pathways travel …

Compared with healthy controls, OCD patients presenting the harm/checking dimension showed decreased FA in the CC and in the left anterior cingulate gyrus and caudate nucleus, whereas patients with a predominant contamination/washing symptom dimens …

We present a 46-year-old man with central pontine myelinolysis (CPM). He had been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and chronic pancreatitis. … e initial diffusion weighted images (DWI) on MRI revealed a small high signal intensity spot in the pons. The second DWI after 14 days revealed a trident-shaped hyperintensity in the pons that was compatible with CPM. His symptoms showed no remarkable changes, but susceptibility weighted images of MRI after 4 months revealed low signal intensity area i …

Transient mutism resolving to cerebellar speech after posterior fossa surgery is a well-recognized phenomenon, particularly in pediatric patients. The anatomic basis for this postoperative functional change is unclear but may reside in the dominant superior cerebellar hemisphere or the medial deep cerebellar nuclei. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl who presented for surgical resection of a cavernous malformation of the right pons (at the level of the middle cerebellar peduncle) after hemorrhage. Preoperatively, her complaints consisted of contralateral motor deficits. She had normal spee…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We conducted this retrospective study to evaluate the clinical, neuroradiological, and neurophysiological findings i … d deep sensory disturbances. Lesions were localized in the medial lemniscus of the middle and lower pons, with a sparing of the spinothalamic tracts. The central conduction times of short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials were prolonged (patients 1, 2, and 4), and the amplitudes were significantly reduced (patients 1 and 2) when stimulating the p …

In this report, we describe the case of a 37-year-old man presenting with intermittent episodes of dizziness and choreiform movements. MRI of the head showed an acute infarction in the left cerebellar hemisphere and multiple chronic infarctions in the cerebellum and pons. Vessel imaging also showed dynamic stenoses in the posterior circulation. This case provides a framework for evaluating young patients with intermittent dizziness and recurrent strokes and highlights the need to combine anatomical angiographies or hemodynamic studies with head rotational behavior.

Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by absence of conjugate horizontal eye movements and progressive scoliosis developing in childhood and adolescence. We present a child with clinical and neuroimaging findings typical of HGPPS. CT and MRI of the brain demonstrated pons hypoplasia, absence of the facial colliculi, butterfly configuration of the medulla and a deep midline pontine cleft. We briefly discuss the imaging aspects of this rare entity in light of the current literature.

The Gasperini syndrome is a cause of peripheral facial palsy: In the following case report, a 75-year-old woman is described who presented with a peripheral left facial palsy. On examination left beating nystagmus was found with contralateral loss of pain and temperature affecting the right side of the body but sparing the face. The signs and symptoms corresponded to the Gasperini syndrome caused by a lesion in the dorsal caudal pons in the region of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. MR imaging confirmed a lesion in this site.

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of brain noradrenergic and orexinergic activity in ketamine-induced sedation.
METHODS: We used orexin neuron-deficient transgenic rats (orexin/ataxin-3) and wild-type controls. Noradrenaline and orexin levels were measured in the pons, hypothalamus, and cerebral cortex. Ketamine-induced loss-of-righting reflex (LORR) was assessed under modulation of noradrenergic or orexinergic activity.
RESULTS: Wild-type rats had higher noradrenaline and orexin levels than transgenic rats across all regions except hypothalamic noradrenaline. Noradrenaline and orexin were co…
