The impact of alcohol minimum pricing policies on vulnerable populations and health equity: A rapid review.

Alcohol minimum pricing policies, including minimum unit pricing (MUP), are effective strategies for reducing alcohol consumption and related harm. However, their equity implications remain underexplored. We conducted a rapid review of PubMed and Web of Science, identifying 37 real-world studies assessing the impacts of alcohol minimum pricing. Studies from diverse contexts were synthesised with respect to vulnerable populations and health equity, focusing on consumption, health outcomes, and economic effects. Findings indicate that minimum pricing reduces consumption among people who drink he

The interplay of social and family environments in shaping adolescent health behaviours: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescent health behaviours are key determinants of long-term health. We aimed to explore the associations between clusters of families with similar socio-familial characteristics and health behaviours in both adolescents and their parents. STUDY DESIGN: The design of the study is a cross-sectional analysis. METHODS: We enrolled adolescents aged 14-17 years and their parents from the SEROCoV-KIDS cohort study (December 2021-June 2022), based in the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland. Marginal logistic regressions were used to compute the sex- and age-adjusted prevalence differences (

Evaluating the homeless population access to mental health services with a validated questionnaire: strengths and challenges.

This article presents the methodological path for developing a structured survey to collect primary data on the vulnerable population, in this case, focused on measuring the people experiencing homelessness (PEH) access to the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS). The validation process was conducted in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2024, and the methodology followed three stages: 1) questions development and definition of the scales used; 2) theoretical and empirical validity tests; 3) quality and reliability tests: completeness and consistency. An questionnaire was assembled with 40 q

Increased albuminuria is highly prevalent in the general population: prevalence of CKD in the Gutenberg Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is essential to slow progression and delay or prevent dialysis. However, in the absence of specific symptoms, patients and physicians may remain unaware of the disease for a long period. Here we present an analysis from the Gutenberg Health Study, a prospective longitudinal cohort study, to estimate the prevalence of CKD indicators in the population. METHODS: A representative sample of 10 125 individuals underwent extensive medical testing at baseline; 9331 were tested again after 5 years. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eG

The Impact of Government Lockdowns on the Mental Health of the General Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread globally, prompting governments in many countries to implement lockdowns to control the transmission of the virus. Outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, and the associated government lockdowns may have significant negative impacts on mental health. A comprehensive review of the available evidence on this topic can provide useful information for policymakers. This review aimed to assess the effects of government lockdowns on the mental health of the general population during emerging infectious disease outbreaks. On Ap

Communicating sexual health to the incarcerated population: information dissemination in a US sample of inmate handbooks.

Incarcerated individuals frequently enter prison with a history of high-risk lifestyle behaviours likely to contribute to the transmission of infectious disease. Prisons offer a unique setting in which to advance health equity to an underserved population by disseminating information and education. Sexual health education has the potential to mitigate negative health consequences in the incarcerated population and improve sexual health practices upon community re-entry, benefiting both incarcerated individuals and communities. Limited empirical research examines sexual health information and e

A Population-Based Scoring System to Assess the Impact of Individual Risk Factors on Vascular Health.

Arterial stiffness is an indicator of vascular health, influenced by both pathological conditions and physiological determinants, noticeably age. Augmentation index (AI) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) are used among others to assess arterial stiffness. Several risk factors may contribute to pathologically increase arterial stiffness and produce early vascular aging. Our study aims to assess the impact of individual risk factors on vascular health, evaluating the distribution of PWV and AI values in a cohort of adult people without modifiable cardiovascular risk factors while analyzing their rol

A dynamic machine learning model for prediction of NAFLD in a health checkup population: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases worldwide. Currently, most NAFLD prediction models are diagnostic models based on cross-sectional data, which failed to provide early identification or clarify causal relationships. We aimed to use time-series deep learning models with longitudinal health checkup records to predict the onset of NAFLD in the future, and update the model stepwise by incorporating new checkup records to achieve dynamic prediction. METHODS: 10,493 participants with over 6 health checkup records from Beijing MJ Health Sc

Brain volume, energy balance, and cardiovascular health in two nonindustrial South American populations.

Little is known about brain aging or dementia in nonindustrialized environments that are similar to how humans lived throughout evolutionary history. This paper examines brain volume (BV) in middle and old age among two indigenous South American populations, the Tsimane and Moseten, whose lifestyles and environments diverge from those in high-income nations. With a sample of 1,165 individuals aged 40 to 94, we analyze population differences in cross-sectional rates of decline in BV with age. We also assess the relationships of BV with energy biomarkers and arterial disease and compare them aga

Stability of clustering of lifestyle risk factors in the Dutch adult population and the association with mental health.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle factors often co-occur in clusters. This study examines whether clusters of lifestyle risk factors, such as smoking, alcohol use, physical inactivity, poor diet, sexual risk behaviour, cannabis and other drug use, change over time in a representative sample of Dutch adults. Additionally, the association between mental health and self-reported depression of lifestyle clusters was examined. METHODS: Each year cross-sectional data of approximately 7500 individuals of 18 years and older from the annual Dutch Health Survey of 2014-2019 were used. Clusters were determined by a

Self-reported vitality and health status are higher in Dutch submariners than in the general population.

INTRODUCTION: Living aboard submarines has a potential negative effect on health. Although studies have evaluated specific health hazards and short-term outcomes, long-term health effects have not been investigated in this population. METHODS: Veteran submariners were contacted through the veterans' society and administered a World Health Organisation validated questionnaire (SF-36) assessing their physical, emotional, and social functioning. Scores were compared with those of the general (reference) population and scores in veteran submariners were differentiated by rank, time at sea and tim
