Challenges and Strategies for Controlling Indonesia's Emerging and Re-Emerging Infection Diseases (EID-REIDs).

This review aims to highlight the occurrences of several emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, particularly 13 types under surveillance of Indonesia's emerging contagious disease task force. These diseases are considered potentially epidemic, due to the nature of tropical climate and high humidity of Indonesia's area. Several factors contribute to the emergence of these diseases: in conjunction with human behavior. Most of these diseases are zoonotic, specifically spread by viruses. The latest emerging infectious disease in Indonesia is monkeypox. Controlling the management of EID-REID

Green tea: a novel functional food for the oral health of older adults.

Functional foods are foods with positive health effects that extend beyond their nutritional value. They affect the function of the body and help in the management of specific health conditions. Green tea, a time-honoured Chinese herb, might be regarded as a functional food because of its inherent anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antimutagenic properties. They are attributed to its reservoir of polyphenols, particularly the catechin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate. Owing to these beneficial actions, this traditional beverage was used in the management of chronic systemic diseases

Scaling up integrated community case management of childhood illness: update from Malawi.

The Government of Malawi (GoM) initiated activities to deliver treatment of common childhood illnesses (suspected pneumonia, fever/suspected malaria, and diarrhea) in the community in 2008. The service providers are Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs), and they are posted nationwide to serve communities at a ratio of 1 to 1,000 population. The GoM targeted the establishment of 3,452 village health clinics (VHCs) in hard-to-reach areas by 2011. By September of 2011, 3,296 HSAs had received training in integrated case management of childhood illness, and 2,709 VHCs were functional. An assessme

People with psychotic disorders are the most vulnerable to cannabis adverse health outcomes: a study in WA State, USA.

Cannabis use has been shown to negatively impact the management and prognosis of psychotic disorders. Little is known about the broader health impacts of cannabis use in this population. This study compares cannabis-related negative health outcomes among individuals with a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder to those with other mental health (MH) diagnoses or no MH diagnosis. Data came from International Cannabis Policy Study (2020-2023). Respondents were 4,144 Washington State individuals aged 16-65, who consumed cannabis in the last 12 months. Three groups were compared for cannabis use negati

Economic Burden of Oral Cancer and Resource-Stratified Approach to the Management of Gingivobuccal Cancers.

Oral cancer represents a major public health issue in low-middle income countries (especially South East Asia) where its burden is disproportionately high. It predominantly affects the lower socioeconomic population and 70% of cases present at advanced stages that need multimodality treatment resulting in high expenditure and poor outcomes. The economic burden of oral cancer extends beyond the medical expenses to include nonmedical and indirect costs. Despite advances in treatment, high costs limit accessibility in resource-constrained settings. A resource-stratified approach is needed for eff

A network analysis framework to improve the delivery of mosquito abatement services in Machala, Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne disease places a high health and economic burden in the American tropics. Comprehensive vector control programs remain the primary method of containing local outbreaks. With limited resources, many vector control operations struggle to serve all affected communities within their districts. In the coastal city of Machala, Ecuador, vector control services, such as application of larvicides and truck-mounted fogging, are delivered through two deployment facilities managed by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health. Public health professionals in Machala face several logistical

Sickle cell and the eye.

Sickle cell anemia and trait are highly prevalent within the African-American and other minority populations in the United States. As treatment modalities improve, these individuals will live longer, increasing the incidence of sickle-related eye disease. As blinding or life-threatening damage may occur to the retina, optic nerve and central nervous system, any nurse involved in the management of sickle cell must be aware of this critical public health issue. Appropriate screening and patient management are vital to the continued quality of life of these patients.

Perioperative Care of Transgender and Gender-Diverse Patients: A Biopsychosocial Approach.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people endure numerous physical and mental health disparities secondary to lifelong stigma and marginalization, which are often perpetuated in medical spaces. Despite such barriers, TGD people are seeking gender-affirming care (GAC) with increased frequency. GAC facilitates the transition from the sex assigned at birth to the affirmed gender identity and is comprised of hormone therapy (HT) and gender-affirming surgery (GAS). The anesthesia professional is uniquely poised to serve as an integral support for TGD patients within the perioperative space. To pr

Sterile Insect Technique: Successful Suppression of an Aedes aegypti Field Population in Cuba.

Dengue virus infections are a serious public health problem worldwide. Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue in Cuba. As there is no vaccine or specific treatment, the control efforts are directed to the reduction of mosquito populations. The indiscriminate use of insecticides can lead to adverse effects on ecosystems, including human health. The sterile insect technique is a species-specific and environment-friendly method of insect population control based on the release of large numbers of sterile insects, ideally males only. The success of this technique for the sustainable managem
