Mutations of the DICER1 gene among children and adolescents with thyroid cancer: a systematic review.

BACKGOUND: The DICER1 gene located on chromosome 14q, essential for the maturation of miRNAs, is commonly associated with multinodular goiter and thyroid carcinomas. We aimed to systematically search the literature and identify mutations in the DICER1 gene associated with thyroid cancer in children and adolescents. METHODS: The study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement through four databases (Pubmed, Web of Science/Scopus/Google Scholar). The quality of the studies was assessed using the ROBINS-1 tool. RESULTS:

"Can We Talk?": A Community-Based Training to Improve Serious Illness Communication.

Serious illness conversations (SICs) are often delayed or avoided in community-based healthcare due to clinician discomfort and lack of training. Given that many patients wish to die at home, yet often do not, there is a need for structured communication training in home care and hospice settings to ensure the care we provide aligns with patient and family preferences. This quality improvement project aimed to assess whether a brief, structured, in-person training session could improve clinician confidence in conducting SICs. A pre-test/post-test design was used. Clinicians participated in a 1

The unsung heroes of traditional healers in healing and traditional medicine in dementia care for Indigenous populations in North America: an exploration of a compassionate, community-led care model.

This paper explores the critical role, experience, and wisdom of traditional healers in providing culturally-safe dementia care for Indigenous populations in North America, particularly as the prevalence of dementia in these communities continues to rise. It highlights the varying perceptions of dementia across cultures; for instance, while Western medicine often views it as a disease, many Indigenous cultures interpret it as a spiritual transition within the life cycle. A literature review conducted from 2000 to 2025 indicates that the marginalization of traditional healers within formal heal

Developing a taxonomy of supportive psychotherapy techniques: Protocol for a systematic review and qualitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: Supportive psychotherapy (SP) is widely practiced, yet its constituent techniques have never been systematically identified or classified. Authors and manuals describe overlapping but non-identical sets in varying terminology, and the boundary between SP and supportive-expressive psychotherapy (SEP) remains unclear, impeding training, research, and comparison. This review aims to identify and classify supportive techniques across the SP and SEP literature and develop a consolidated taxonomy, mapping SEP-specific expressive techniques separately to clarify the supportive-expressive

Evaluating Acupuncture for Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: A Narrative Review of Clinical Evidence and Mechanistic Perspectives.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite the high prevalence of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathic pain (CIPNp), its management remains challenging, and reliable preventive strategies are still lacking. Current treatment is largely symptomatic and often provides only modest benefits, as available pharmacological therapies have shown limited and inconsistent efficacy. In this context, acupuncture has been investigated as a non-pharmacological intervention, but the certainty and clinical applicability of the available evidence remain unclear. This critical narrative review examines the clinical e

Systematic analysis of adverse reaction signals induced by leflunomide, upadacitinib, and baricitinib in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: a FAERS database analysis.

PURPOSE: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a widely recognized chronic inflammatory disease. Leflunomide, upadacitinib, and baricitinib are frequently used to treat inflammatory diseases, including RA, although understanding of their associated adverse drug events (ADEs) remains limited. This study analyzed ADEs reported for these drugs based on the United States FAERS database. METHODS: Data were extracted from the FAERS database, including ADE reports from January 2004 to December 2024. ADE reports related to leflunomide, upadacitinib, and baricitinib were described and categorized using the pre

REM sleep prefrontal high-frequency oscillation chains mediate distinct cortical - hippocampal reactivation patterns compared to NREM sleep.

REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM (NREM) sleep stages contribute to systems memory consolidation in hippocampal-cortical circuits. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying REM memory processes remain relatively unclear compared to NREM memory reactivation. Here we report, in rodents, the existence of prefrontal cortical (PFC) high-frequency oscillation (HFO) chains in REM sleep during the consolidation of recently acquired spatial memory. High-density tetrode recordings in hippocampal area CA1 and PFC reveal that REM cortical HFOs occur in characteristic chains that are phase-modula

Safety of ozanimod and etrasimod in ulcerative colitis: A disproportionality analysis of the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System database.

Ozanimod and etrasimod are sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor modulators approved for ulcerative colitis treatment. Given their limited real-world safety data in this specific population, we conducted a disproportionality analysis using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event (AE) Reporting System database, aiming to explore their post-marketing safety profile. Original data were extracted from the aforementioned database. Three algorithms, namely reporting odds ratio, proportional reporting ratio, and Bayesian confidence propagation neural network, were employed to identify drug-related

Anesthetic Management of Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis: A Narrative Review with an Illustrative Case in Cardiac Surgery.

Background: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), formerly Churg-Strauss syndrome, is a rare necrotizing vasculitis characterized by asthma, eosinophilia, and systemic granulomatosis vasculitis. Perioperative risk is primarily driven by airway hyperreactivity, potential cardiac disease, chronic immunosuppressive therapy, and reported alterations in plasma cholinesterase activity. Evidence specifically addressing anesthetic management remains scarce and largely limited to case-based reports. Methods: A focused narrative review was conducted by searching MEDLINE (via PubMed), Sco

From amyloid PET to plasma biomarkers: A multimodal imaging framework for early diagnosis and staging of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is biologically defined by amyloid beta and tau pathology. Available biomarkers enable early diagnosis but differ in targets, accessibility, and utility. This review synthesizes evidence for plasma biomarkers, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) to develop a pragmatic, stage-aware framework for early diagnosis and staging. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of recent literature and professional guidance (2024-2026) covering plasma biomarkers; structural/functional MRI; and amyloid, tau, and fluorodeoxyglucose (F

Functional/Secondary tricuspid regurgitation (STR) accounts for over 85% of clinically significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and is associated with adverse prognosis and impaired quality of life. Advances in percutaneous tricuspid valve (TV) interventions underscore the need to differentiate TR aetiologies, mechanisms, and phenotypes. STR is subdivided into atrial (A-STR), caused by right atrial dilation and tricuspid annular enlargement without significant leaflet tethering, and ventricular (V-STR), resulting from right ventricular dilation/dysfunction with leaflet tethering. Crossing borders: the need for empirical evidence of real-world evidence transportability in oncology.

WHAT IS THIS ARTICLE ABOUT?: This article discusses the challenges of using non local real-world evidence (RWE) in health technology assessments (HTA) when local data are unavailable, insufficient, or inappropriate. HTA organizations often prefer data collected locally or regionally, but the lack of suitable data in many markets has increased interest in understanding data 'transportability' - whether data from one country or population can be used to predict outcomes in another. Established in 2024, the Flatiron Fostering Oncology RWE Use Cases and Methods (FORUM) research consortium is explo

Research-based narrative videos to reduce stigma: insights from older women living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Older women living with HIV (WLWH) experience a heightened burden of stigma, compounded by age, gender, social isolation, and depression. Despite growing recognition of these challenges, few stigma reduction interventions are specifically designed for this population, particularly in the Southern United States. METHODS: We explored the acceptability, personal relevance, and perceived effectiveness of a stigma reduction video series tailored for older WLWH. The videos were developed based on findings from a prior qualitative metasynthesis and reflected the lifecycle of stigma acr

Exploration of a modified pretreatment process coupled with GC-MS/MS for determination of 18 phthalates in edible oils.

Phthalates (PAEs), which are pollutants that most easily migrate from plastic packages to edible oils, have received increasing attention. In this work, a sample preconditioning method was proposed and explored, involving a single-step extraction using a methanol and ethyl hexanoate mixed solvent, followed by clean-up with a mixed absorbent of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and N-propyl ethylenediamine (PSA), for the determination of 18 PAEs in oil samples through GC-MS/MS analysis. The triazine ring structure and conjugated aromatic heterocyclic accumulation structure of g-C3N4 and the ami

4-phenylbutyric acid mitigates triphenyl phosphate developmental neurotoxicity via the ER stress-autophagy-apoptosis axis in zebrafish embryos.

Although environmental monitoring data for 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA) remain limited, its potential co-occurrence with triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) in aquatic systems cannot be excluded, given its applications in agriculture and pharmaceuticals. The combined effects of these compounds on early neurodevelopment in organisms such as zebrafish remain largely unexplored. Here, zebrafish embryos were exposed from 2 h post-fertilisation (hpf) to TPhP, then co exposure to environmentally plausible 4-PBA (0.5 μM). Light-dark locomotion, high-light avoidance, and light-dark preference assays revealed t

Theoretical insights into nanoparticle interfaces as dual carrier-reactors: Catalytic amplification of methylsiloxane oxidation and secondary organic aerosol formation.

The environmental fate of volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS), pervasive pollutants, is critically governed by their interactions with nanoscale interfaces, yet these processes remain poorly understood. This study reveals how aqueous and mineral nanoparticles alter the oxidation processes of linear (L2) and cyclic (D3, D4) VMS by atmospheric oxidants through comparing the VMS reaction in the air-phase, bulk water, air-water, and air-dust interface by combining quantum chemical calculations with molecular dynamics simulation methods. Results show that VMS exhibit a surface preference at the air-wate
