[The system of intraoperative and perioperative safety in surgical treatment of benign diseases of the thyroid gland].

The system of safe interventions on the thyroid gland was developed on the basis of experiences with surgical treatment of 2255 patients with diffuse toxic goiter, 437--with nodular toxic goiter, 1377--with nodular nontoxic goiter, 123--with autoimmune thyroiditis and 937--with recurrent goiter. The system includes measures in the preoperative period, those during operation and the postoperative rehabilitation of the patients. This system allowed shortening of the period of preoperative preparation, decrease of blood loss, and less number of postoperative complications.

Statistical analysis of factors affecting survival after glioblastoma multiforme.

Statistical evaluation of 71 cases (adults) of histologically confirmed supratentorial surgically treated glioblastoma multiforme seen during the period 1958 to 1973 revealed that the state of calcification as determined by roentgenography and the histological appearance of the neoplasm appeared to have a relationship with the postoperative period of survival. Postoperative adjuvant treatment, location of the neoplasm, duration of preoperative symptoms, patient's age at onset, preoperative condition, and cystic formation in the neoplasm also appeared to have a relationship, although it was sli

General Principles of Risk Mitigation before Colorectal Surgery.

Preoperative risk mitigation is vital for improving surgical outcomes and patient safety, particularly in colorectal cancer (CRC) surgeries. While traditional approaches have primarily focused on postoperative care, the preoperative period is a unique opportunity for intervention to enhance patients' physiological readiness for surgery and minimize complications. This narrative review examines the general principles of preoperative risk mitigation, identifies common complications in colorectal surgery, and explores the impact of patient comorbidities on surgical outcomes. Additionally, the rev…

Preoperative anxiety.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With first research reports dating back to the 1970s, the important role of anxiety in the perioperative period has been recognized for a long time and remains in effect. RECENT FINDINGS: The global pooled prevalence of preoperative anxiety among 14 000 surgical patients was reported to be 48%. The underlying fears among surgical patients include: fear of surgical complications, worry about the duration and degree of disability after the procedure, concerns about general anesthesia and the associated loss of control, as well as fear of waking up and experiencing discomfort

Increased dispersion of refractoriness in patients with atrial fibrillation in the early postoperative period after coronary artery bypass grafting.

INTRODUCTION: Increased atrial effective refractory period (AERP) dispersion is well correlated with vulnerability to atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the preoperative electrophysiologic characteristics of atrial abnormalities that may play an important role in the development of AF postoperatively in patients with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) have not been investigated in detail. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-six consecutive patients who underwent CABG were enrolled in this study. Eighteen patients (14 men and 4 women; mean age 57.7 +/- 5.2 years) with AF in the early postoperative

Silent threat: how preoperative albumin levels affect geriatric cancer surgery outcomes?

BACKGROUND: Preoperative hypoalbuminemia is a common condition in elderly cancer patients and may adversely affect surgical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative serum albumin levels and postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, and mortality in geriatric patients undergoing cancer surgery. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 330 patients aged 65 years and older who underwent cancer surgery between 2018 and 2024. Patients were divided into two groups based on preoperative albumin levels: hypoalbuminemia (< 3.5 g/dL) and nor

Preoperative Carriage of Respiratory Viruses and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome After Cardiac Surgery: Protocol for the VIRUS-ATTAC Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery patients are at particular risk of postoperative acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with an estimated incidence of 5% to 10%. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), ischemia-reperfusion injury, and blood product transfusions are well-recognized contributing factors. Asymptomatic carriage of respiratory viruses has been hypothesized to prime the lungs and potentiate ARDS development when combined with the pulmonary insults of cardiac surgery. However, no study has directly assessed the relationship between preoperative asymptomatic viral carriage and postoperative AR

Asynchronous telerehabilitation in prehabilitation and postoperative recovery for colorectal cancer: A protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading global malignancy, and surgery is frequently followed by complications, functional decline, and reduced quality of life. Multimodal prehabilitation and rehabilitation can improve physical recovery and psychosocial outcomes, but uptake is often limited by logistical and mobility barriers. Asynchronous telerehabilitation offers a flexible, patient-centered, and scalable approach; however, its effectiveness across the perioperative CRC pathway has not been rigorously evaluated. This trial will evaluate a multimodal asynchronous program delivered

Low Preoperative Exercise Tolerance Predicts Impaired Skeletal Muscle Recovery After Kidney Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia remains a significant concern among kidney transplant recipients even after renal function improves. However, the predictors of impaired muscle recovery are not well established. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 40 adults who underwent living-donor kidney transplantation at Kansai Medical University Hospital between January 2018 and December 2020. Preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) was used to stratify patients into low-tolerance (anaerobic threshold VO₂ < 11 mL/kg/min and peak VO₂ < 20 mL/kg/min) and normal groups. The skeletal muscle index (SMI) w

Preoperative predictors of patient-reported outcomes after joint-preserving forefoot surgery for rheumatoid arthritis : a case series.

AIMS: Forefoot deformities are common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and often impair quality of life. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), including the Self-Administered Foot Evaluation Questionnaire (SAFE-Q), are increasingly used to assess surgical outcomes; however, the preoperative conditions needed to achieve favourable postoperative PROMs remain unclear. This study aimed to identify factors associated with postoperative SAFE-Q scores (mean score across five sub-scales, maximum 100) and determined preoperative cutoff values predictive of achieving predefined postoperat

Preoperative pain experience and distribution in relation to mental health in Lenke type 1 and 2 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a prospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Pain is common in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), yet its distribution is heterogeneous and mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Beyond structural factors, emerging evidence suggests a psychosocial component with links to mental health. This study examined the relationship between preoperative pain and its distribution with mental health in Lenke type 1-2 AIS patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion. METHODS: In this prospective single-center cohort study (July 2023-July 2025), Lenke type 1-2 AIS patients completed the revised SRS-22 (SRS-22r) questionnaire a
