Observations based on a clinical and experimental study of the effect of hair dye (paraphenylenediamine) on the lens are reported. Two hundred individuals of either sex using hair dye were examined in detail and lenticular changes were found in 89% while only 23% in controls. The lenticular changes were related to duration, amount, and individual sensitivity to dye. Various types of lenticular opacities encountered are mentioned. BACKGROUND: Recent research has shown that wearing multifocal glasses increases the risk of trips and falls in older people. The aim of this study is to determine whether the provision of single-lens distance glasses to older multifocal glasses wearers, with recommendations for wearing them for walking and outdoor activities, can prevent falls. We will also measure the effect of the intervention on health status, lifestyle activities and fear of falling, as well as the extent of adherence to the program.

Home vision training was prescribed for 161 presbyopic patients (ages 45 to 89) who had vision-related symptoms and convergence insufficiency or visual skills deficiencies. Most patients required 10 weeks or less of treatment, the longest treatment period being 15 weeks. Elimination of the symptoms and improved responses on certain optometric tests was achieved by 92% of the patients. Evaluation 3 months after therapy indicated that 77 patients required additional training, the older patients requiring it more often, to retain the initial improvement.
