Perceptions and attitudes toward obesity care among nursing professionals.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of obesity is evolving from a perceived lifestyle-related condition to a chronic, biologically driven disease. Perception of obesity as a disease among health care professionals is important for effective evidence-based obesity care. Nurses have the most sustained patient contact and play an important role in obesity prevention and management, yet their role in this context remains underexplored. We therefore assessed the perceptions and attitudes towards obesity and obesity care in a Slovenian nursing care cohort. METHODS: Non-interventional, descriptive, cross-

Open Science in Undergraduate Medical Education: An International Framework for Transparency, Responsibility, and Professional Identity Formation.

Concerns about reproducibility, transparency, and research waste have intensified debates about trust in medical research and health-related sciences. Although Open science initiatives aim to address these challenges, their role in undergraduate medical education remains underexplored. Undergraduate medical education typically emphasizes appraisal of published evidence but pays less attention to how research is conducted, governed, and disseminated. This article proposes an international conceptual framework that positions Open science as part of professional formation in undergraduate medical

Travel and professional networks in the origins of Spanish psychiatry.

This article examines the importance of travel and professional networks in the origins of Spanish psychiatry. After reviewing the early alienists' Enlightenment predecessors and their therapeutic and professional trajectories, it describes the trips to foreign psychiatric institutions made during the second third of the nineteenth century by a group of exiled Spanish doctors, commissioners and pioneers. Later, as they became more socially, institutionally and professionally established, some figures of Spanish psychological medicine cultivated their connections and international profile by or

Diabetes outcomes of patients followed by pharmacists newly embedded in primary care clinics.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the early impact of embedded pharmacists on diabetes outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes in the primary care setting. METHODS: This study assessed pharmacists' impact on quality of care by comparing the diabetes outcomes of patients managed by newly embedded clinical pharmacists to those of patients managed exclusively by providers. A multicenter, observational, retrospective cohort study was conducted examining adults with a diagnosis of diabetes and a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level above 8%. The primary outcome was the reduction in

Implementation of a Pharmacy-Led Psychotropic Stewardship Pilot Program at an Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Psychotropic stewardship programs (PSPs) have been proposed to optimize psychiatric medication use and improve medication safety; however, data describing their implementation and impact in general medical inpatient settings remain limited. This quality improvement project evaluated a pharmacist-led PSP pilot at an academic medical center. METHODS: Adult inpatients were identified using predefined criteria including use of high-risk psychotropic agents (carbamazepine, clozapine, lithium, lamotrigine, valproic acid [VPA]), scheduled benzodiazepines in patients 65 years and older, a

[Survey of Pharmaceutical Interventions in Outpatient Cancer Chemotherapy].

In recent years, cancer chemotherapy has been administered in an outpatient setting; therefore, patient self-management of adverse events is an important issue. Pharmaceutical interventions were performed by pharmacists at the following 3 time points: before the physician consultation, after the physician consultation, and during multidisciplinary conferences at the Ibaraki Prefectural Central Hospital Cancer Chemotherapy Center. In this study, prescription proposals and their effectiveness for adverse events, were investigated. Of the 338 cases in which pharmaceutical interventions were perfo

"Engagement Is Not One-Dimensional": The Multiple Roles of Patient Educators With Physical Disabilities in Family Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Patient interaction has long been central to medical training. In recent years, involving patients as educators and bringing their lived experiences of illness or disability to the classroom has been valued in clinical education. These "experts by experience" enrich learning by offering authentic perspectives that foster empathy, challenge assumptions, and promote person-centred care. To our knowledge, there is no existing research on the experiences of persons with disabilities (PWD) serving as patient educators. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with seven

Perceptions of pharmacist-furnished nicotine replacement therapy among participants who smoke in California.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: California's Central Valley has high rates of tobacco product use and low rates of access to primary care providers. In 2016, California sought to increase access to cessation treatment by allowing pharmacists to prescribe nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). We sought to identify the extent to which this prescribing authority has been integrated into practice. METHODS: From December 2023 to May 2024, we surveyed adult California participants (n = 271) who smoke about their smoking patterns, perceptions towards NRT, experiences with receiving tobacco cessation resourc

Development and implementation of a best practice alerting process for naloxone prescribing at rural community pharmacies in Wisconsin: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The opioid overdose epidemic continues to worsen in the United States, with opioid-related deaths increasing by 13 folds from 2000 to 2022 in Wisconsin. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, can save lives by reversing opioid overdose in a matter of minutes. However, naloxone access and utilization remain suboptimal. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the development and implementation of best practice alerting (BPA) processes within community pharmacies. This study assessed to what extent the BPA processes (1a) prompted pharmacists to discuss naloxone with high-risk patients; (1b) increase

Expanding pharmacogenomics in the community pharmacy setting: A survey of Alabama community pharmacists' confidence, perceptions, interest, and preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacogenomics (PGx) clinical decision support (CDS) is essential for effective PGx implementation, yet most tools remain confined to institutional settings. Community pharmacists, who make up nearly half of the U.S. pharmacy workforce, are among the most accessible health care providers, offering care without appointments and reaching patients across both urban and rural areas. This accessibility positions them as critical entry points for delivering PGx services and advancing equitable access. However, many lack the training and resources necessary to provide informed PGx care.

Closing the GDMT gap: insights from PHARM-HF A&F on the role of pharmacists in heart failure care.

This focused review examines the results of the PHARM-HF A&F Study, a randomized trial evaluating audit and feedback interventions to optimize heart failure medication management among primary care pharmacists in the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system. Despite strong evidence that quadruple guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) can reduce mortality by ~ 70% in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), implementation remains suboptimal, particularly in rural areas. While both trial arms showed improvements in heart failure medication management during the stud

This study aimed to assess the difference in time to achieve diabetes control with pharmacist management compared with nonpharmacist management. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was average time to achieve goal A1c with pharmacist management compared with nonpharmacist management. Secondary objectives included the rate of achieving goal A1c, mean A1c reduction, rate of hospitalization and emergency department
