Reading and coherent motion perception in school age children.

This study includes an evaluation, according to age, of the reading and global motion perception developmental trajectories of 2027 school age children in typical stages of development. Reading is assessed using the reading rate score test, for which all of the student participants, regardless of age, received the same passage of text of a medium difficulty reading level. The coherent motion perception threshold is determined according to the adaptive psychophysical protocol based on a four-alternative, forced-choice procedure. Three different dot velocities: 2, 5, and 8 deg/s were used for bo

Evaluation of a magnetic resonance-compatible dentoalveolar tactile stimulus device.

BACKGROUND: Few methods exist to study central nervous system processes following dentoalveolar tactile stimulation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), likely due to inherent technical difficulties. Our primary goal was to develop and perform feasibility testing of a novel device capable of delivering valid and reliable dentoalveolar stimuli at dental chair-side and during MRI. Details of a device designed to deliver dentoalveolar dynamic pressure stimuli are described. Device testing took place in three settings: a) laboratory testing to assess range of stimulus force intensit

Contributions of visible persistence and perceptual set to the flash-lag effect: focusing on flash onset abolishes the illusion.

Among other theories, visible persistence has been suggested to explain the flash-lag effect (FLE). According to this account, the flash is not compared to the moving object at its perceived onset, but at a later time while it is still subjectively visible. Therefore, it is reported to lag the moving object. We show that observers' perceptual set determines whether the persisting image of the flash or its onset is used to judge relative position. Spontaneously, observers use the persisting image, such that a flash-lag results. When forced to focus on the onset of the flash because flashes and

Early age-related decline in the effective number of trajectories tracked in adult human vision.

Human performance in many visual and cognitive tasks declines with age, the rate of decline being task dependent. Here, we used a multiple-object tracking (MOT) task to provide a clear demonstration of a steep cognitive decline that begins relatively early in adult life. Stimuli consisted of 8 dots that moved along linear trajectories from left to right. At the midpoint of their trajectories, a certain number of dots, D (1, 2 or 3), deviated either clockwise or counter-clockwise by a certain magnitude (57 degrees, 38 degrees or 19 degrees); the task for observers was to identify the direction

Investigating the functional integrity of the dorsal visual pathway in autism and dyslexia.

Numerous reports of elevated global motion thresholds across a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders have prompted researchers to suggest that abnormalities in global motion perception are a result of a general deficiency in the dorsal visual pathway. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the integrity of the dorsal visual pathway at lower subcortical (sensitivity to flicker contrast) and higher cortical (sensitivity to global motion) levels in children with autism, children with dyslexia, and typically developing children, of similar age and ability. While children with autism demonstrated i

The role of the corpus callosum in the perception of reversible figures in children.

To test the role of interhemispheric competition through the corpus callosum in the perceptual alternation of reversible figures, we compared children with callosal pathology and typically developing children on a bistable stimulus task. The children with corpus callosum pathology reported significantly less changes of percepts per minute than the age-matched typically developing children. In addition, older typically developing children reported significantly more changes of percepts than the younger ones. These results support the hypothesis that the rate of reversal between two interpretati

Apparent position in depth of stationary moving three-dimensional objects.

Motion signals contained within a stationary object projected on the fronto-parallel plane shift the object's apparent spatial position in the direction of the motion [see De Valois, R. L., & De Valois, K. K. (1991). Vernier acuity with stationary moving Gabors. Vision Research, 31(9), 1619-1626]. We report an analogous apparent position shift of three-dimensional objects that contain local elements that move in depth. Our stimulus was a transparent three-dimensional cylinder defined by 150 limited-lifetime dots, oriented such that it was end on and its tangent plane was circular. Dots moved i

"I won't do what you tell me!": elevated mood and the assessment of advice-taking in euthymic bipolar I disorder.

We hypothesized that when individuals with bipolar disorder are engaged in goal-directed behaviour and experience elevated mood, their decision-making becomes less constrained by advice from other people. This process may allow their goal-directed behaviour to persist, contributing to manic symptoms. Three groups of 32 participants: euthymic-bipolar-I, remitted-unipolar and never-depressed healthy controls were allocated to either a high or low mood induction. Advice-taking was assessed before and after the induction by a computerized task incorporating facial images. The bipolar group signifi

Neural mechanisms of attentional modulation of perceptual grouping by collinearity.

Psychophysical research showed that detection of an oriented visual target is facilitated when the target is grouped with collinear visual flankers. However, this collinear grouping effect is evident only when the flankers are attended. This study examined neural mechanisms underlying the interaction between attention and grouping by collinearity. Event-related potentials were recorded from study participants who judged whether oriented Gabor patches (i.e. visual elements consisting of a sinusoidal contrast modulation convolved with a Gaussian function) along the cued orientation were collinea

Fear of falling and postural control in Parkinson's disease.

This study investigated the relationship between fear of falling (FOF) and qualitative and quantitative postural control in Parkinson's disease (PD). Fifty-eight nondemented PD patients were studied along with age-matched healthy controls. The degree of FOF was estimated using the Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale. Qualitative postural control was evaluated using a component of the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale. Postural control was quantified, using centre of pressure measures obtained from a force plate, for eight standing balance tests of different challenges. The result

Bimanual interference associated with the selection of target locations.

Four experiments were conducted to identify the locus of interference observed during the preparation of bimanual reaching movements. Target locations were specified by color, and the right-hand and left-hand targets could be either the same or a different color. Movements of different amplitudes (Experiment 1) or different directions (Experiment 2) to targets of the same color were initiated more quickly than symmetric movements to targets of different colors. These results indicate that costs observed during bimanual movements arise during target selection rather than during motor programmin

FPL and sweep VEP to tritan stimuli in young human infants.

Young infants can distinguish red from green without brightness cues which shows that neural pathways processing color information (the 'red-green' color-opponent pathway) are functional early in life. There is some doubt over whether the 'blue-yellow' pathway is functional in young infants. Here, we show that infants behave like tritanopic adults until 2-3 months post-term age. By 3-4 months, infants distinguish tritan stimuli, and therefore, the 'blue-yellow' pathway must be functional by that age. Our sweep visual evoked potentials to identical stimuli, however, are not significantly above

The influence of color on transient system activity: implications for dyslexia research.

Metacontrast and apparent motion experiments designed to utilize transient system resources were adopted to investigate the proposal that transient system activity is differentially influenced by different colored stimuli. The results generally showed no effect of color on transient system activity in either adults or children. However, the predicted pattern of results was demonstrated when contrast rather than color was manipulated in a final metacontrast experiment. We discuss the tenuousness of the proposal that color differentially influences transient activity, exploring its physiological

Olfactory and trigeminal event-related potentials in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal/neuronal hyperexcitability and spreading depression activating the trigemino-vascular system are discussed in migraine-pathophysiology. This study investigated trigeminal and olfactory event-related potentials in migraineurs. METHODS: Nasal chemosensitivity was assessed in 19 female migraineurs with or without aura > 72 h before or after an attack and in 19 healthy females employing event-related cortical potentials (ERPs) after specific trigeminal stimulation of nasal nociceptors with short pulses of CO2, and specific olfactory stimulation with H2S. Raised object on a planar surface stroked across the fingerpad: responses of cutaneous mechanoreceptors to shape and orientation.

The representations of orientation and shape were studied in the responses of cutaneous mechanoreceptors to an isolated, raised object on a planar surface stroked across the fingerpad. The objects were the top portions of a sphere with a 5-mm radius, and two toroids each with a radius of 5 mm along one axis and differing radii of 1 or 3 mm along the orthogonal axis. The velocity and direction of stroking were fixed while the orientation of the object in the horizontal plane was varied. Each object was stroked along a series of laterally shifted, parallel, linear trajectories over the receptive

Binocular summation in normal, monocularly deprived, and strabismic cats: visual evoked potentials.

We have studied visual evoked potentials (VEP) in the cat using dichoptically presented sinusoidal gratings. Our goals were to determine if binocular disparity causes differential responses in the VEP, and to examine the effects of monocular deprivation and convergent or divergent strabismus on the degree of binocular summation. Binocular disparity in stimuli causes no regular alterations of visual evoked responses, except at very low spatial frequencies. However, this apparent selectivity is probably due to luminance modulation in the central retina at low frequencies. The insensitivity to bi

Complex interactions between lightness, chroma, and hue in color ensemble perception.

Human color perception is trichromatic, and color spaces that quantify the range of perceived colors are commonly mapped in three coordinate dimensions. The human visual system can abstract a single color representation from spatial color variation, but such representations do not always conform to a colorimetric average. Here, we investigate how spatial variation in lightness, chroma, and hue, as well as their mutual relationships, affect perceptual color averages. To obtain baselines, we estimated simple discrimination thresholds for lightness, chroma, and hue. Next, we used simple, spatial

Determination of maximum acceptable and comfortable height during one-handed lifting.

BACKGROUND: One-handed lifting commonly occurs in the industry. Specific guidelines of proper heights during one-handed lifting could be valuable information to design or to assess the risk of work environment. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the maximum acceptable height and comfortable height during one-handed vertical lifting by gender, participant height, hand, and object weight. METHODS: Based on the psychophysical method, 72 males and 50 females, divided into four different height groups, determined their maximum acceptable and comfortable heights by each hand (

Transformation of the Visual Afterimage Under Subject's Eye and Body Movements and the Visual Field Constancy Mechanisms.

Two types of positive afterimages differing in their structural complexity--called poor and rich--were used to investigate the visual field constancy mechanisms during eye and head movements. In the case of a poor afterimage, consistent with Emmert's law, every eye and head movement caused the afterimage to appear moving (in exactly the same way), unlike a real object, which appeared to remain stationary during those same eye and head movements (although its retinal image moved opposite to the eye movement). However, in the case of a rich afterimage, the afterimage appeared stationary during e

Lower pitch is larger, yet falling pitches shrink.

Experiments using diverse paradigms, including speeded discrimination, indicate that pitch and visually-perceived size interact perceptually, and that higher pitch is congruent with smaller size. While nearly all of these studies used static stimuli, here we examine the interaction of dynamic pitch and dynamic size, using Garner's speeded discrimination paradigm. Experiment 1 examined the interaction of continuous rise/fall in pitch and increase/decrease in object size. Experiment 2 examined the interaction of static pitch and size (steady high/low pitches and large/small visual objects), usin
