COVID-19 response in northwest Syria: innovation and community engagement in a complex conflict.

Despite lacking capacity and resources, the health system in the northwest Syria is using innovative approaches for the containment of COVID-19. Lessons drawn from previous outbreaks in the region, such as the polio outbreak in 2013 and the annual seasonal influenza, have enabled the Early Warning and Response Network, a surveillance system to develop mechanisms of predicting risk and strengthening surveillance for the new pandemic. Social media tools such as WhatsApp are effectively collecting health information and communicating health messaging about COVID-19. Community engagement has also

Are We on Our Way to Achieving the 2020 Goals for Schistosomiasis Morbidity Control Using Current World Health Organization Guidelines?

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains an endemic parasitic disease affecting millions of people around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set goals of controlling morbidity to be reached by 2020, along with elimination as a public health problem in certain regions by 2025. Mathematical models of parasite transmission and treatment impact have been developed to assist in controlling the morbidity caused by schistosomiasis. These models can inform and guide implementation policy for mass drug administration programs, and help design monitoring and evaluation activities. METHODS: W

Lay perceptions, beliefs and practices linked to the persistence of anthrax outbreaks in cattle in the Western Province of Zambia.

Anthrax, a neglected zoonotic disease that is transmitted by a spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, Bacillus anthracis, has reached endemic proportions in the Western Province of Zambia. Transmission of anthrax from the environment as well as between cattle has been observed to be partly because of entrenched beliefs, perceptions and traditional practices among cattle farmers in the known outbreak areas. This study was aimed at exploring lay perceptions, beliefs and practices that influence anthrax transmission in cattle of the Western Province. A mixed-methods study was conducted from August

Characteristics of young women who gave birth in the US-Mexico border region, 2005: the Brownsville-Matamoros Sister City Project for Women's Health.

INTRODUCTION: Childbearing during adolescence and young adulthood is associated with adverse effects on health and quality of life. Lowering birth rates among young women is a binational priority in the US-Mexico border region, yet baseline information about birth rates and pregnancy risk is lacking. Increased understanding of the characteristics of young women who give birth in the region will help target high-risk groups for sexual and reproductive health services. METHODS: We examined data on reproductive health characteristics collected in hospitals from 456 women aged 24 years or younger

Public's and police officers' interpretation and handling of domestic violence cases: divergent realities.

The public's and police officers'interpretation and handling of realistic hypothetical domestic violence cases and their stereotypic views about domestic violence are discussed. A sample of 131 experienced officers, 127 novice officers, and 157 adult laypersons were randomly assigned to read a domestic violence case. Experienced officers were more likely to arrest only the husband than were laypersons or rookie officers even when respondents inferred that the husband was primarily responsible or had used violence before. Experienced officers considered their stereotypic beliefs about battered

Organ donation and brain preservation after assisted dying: case report and considerations for a potential pathway.

Protecting life and restoring health have been at the core of the conception of medical care since antiquity, for health professionals and the public alike. Assisted dying represents a practice that appears to challenge this traditional conception. In jurisdictions where assisted dying is condoned, the question remains as to whether the practice should be medicalized or deferred to non-medical actors. Irrespective of the divisive controversy surrounding assisted dying and its medicalization per se, the practice gives rise to high-stakes ethical, legal and organizational challenges when interse

Exploring the impact of public health teams on alcohol premises licensing in England and Scotland (ExILEnS): procotol for a mixed methods natural experiment evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Recent regulatory changes in the system by which premises are licensed to sell alcohol, have given health representatives a formal role in the process in England and Scotland. The degree to which local public health teams engage with this process varies by locality in both nations, which have different licensing regimes. This study aims to critically assess the impact on alcohol-related harms - and mechanisms - of public health stakeholders' engagement in alcohol premises licensing from 2012 to 2018, comparing local areas with differing types and intensities of engagement, and exam

Knowledge-practice gap in leishmaniasis among medical students in an endemic region: a multi-university cross-sectional study.

Leishmaniasis remains a major neglected tropical disease in endemic regions, where early recognition, reporting, and management are essential for effective control. Medical students represent a critical link between clinical practice and public health surveillance. However, gaps in knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP), particularly the translation of knowledge into actionable behavior, remain underexplored. A multi-university cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students in Palestine using a structured, self-administered online questionnaire. Data were collected between Janua

Why addressing conflicts of interest is essential to progress in reducing commercially driven health harms: Lessons from tobacco.

Globally and in the UK, significant progress has been made in tackling the harms of tobacco use. This was enabled by addressing the fundamental conflict between the tobacco industry's interests and those of the public, including by rejecting partnerships with the tobacco industry. Conflicts of interest (COIs), like those identified in tobacco control, exist in other areas of public health, yet governments, including the UK, continue to work in partnership with other health-harming industries, including alcohol, ultra-processed food and gambling, despite evidence that partnership approaches whe

Results of a nurse-led workshop designed to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Preventing the negative consequences of prenatal exposure to alcohol remains an unmet challenge. This paper presents the results of a workshop, designed to increase the implementation of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) prevention interventions in 8 counties of New York. The workshop was based on constructivist learning theory and used the Population-Based Public Health Nursing Intervention Model as the structure for discussing potential interventions. The number and type of FASD interventions implemented were determined by surveys sent out postworkshop to 167 participants. At 4 months

Challenges associated with the implementation of institutional quarantine and isolation strategies during major multicountry viral outbreaks in Africa (2000-2023): a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Quarantine and isolation (Q&I) are interrelated but not mutually exclusive public health practices for disease control, which may face public resistance in the context of health emergencies due to associated challenges. Hence, it is often tough for most countries to implement Q&I even in the context of health emergencies. Therefore, this scoping review examines the challenges associated with the implementation of institutional Q&I strategies during major multicountry viral outbreaks (Ebola, Lassa and COVID-19) in Africa between 2000 and 2023. METHODS: This scoping review was desig…
