Fear of the unknown: ionizing radiation exposure during pregnancy.

Ionizing radiation during pregnancy can negatively impact a fetus. In light of the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in Japan, we discuss existing knowledge on the health effects of radiation and preventive measures for pregnant women. Overall, the risk of exposure to radiation is limited but severe defects can result from fetal radiation exposure >100 mGy equivalent to 10 rad (>1000 chest x-rays). While such high-level exposure rarely occurs during single medical diagnostic procedures, caution should be exercised for pregnant women. As a protective public health measure in light of a disaster,

Diagnostic Imaging in pediatric thoracic trauma.

Thoracic trauma accounts for approximately 14% of blunt force traumatic deaths, second only to head injuries. Chest trauma can be blunt (90% of cases) or penetrating. In young patients, between 60 and 80% of chest injuries result from blunt trauma, with over half as a consequence of impact with motor vehicles, whereas in adolescents and adults, penetrating trauma has a statistically more prominent role. Pulmonary contusions and rib fractures are the most frequent injuries occurring. Chest X-ray is the first imaging modality of choice to identify patients presenting with life-threatening condit

Overview of radiation effects and control.

The controversy over the effects of low-level exposure to radiation enhances the perception of radiation as a particularly insidious phenomenon of nature. Yet radiation has many useful purposes, including applications for medical diagnosis and therapy, industrial quality control, and the generation of electrical power. Attainment of such societal benefits without compromising the health and safety of potentially exposed persons requires imposition of rigorous measures to control radiation exposures.

Duty of candour and clinically significant accidental or unintended exposures: revisiting the definition of moderate harm for patient safety incidents involving ionizing radiation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore a quantitative interpretation of the term 'moderate harm' as applied to the triggering of the duty of candour associated with clinically significant accidental and unintended exposures to ionizing radiation. METHODS: Current definitions of 'moderate harm' were matched to the lay descriptions of disease and injury states used in the calculation of detriment as disability-adjusted life years (DALY) by the World Health Organization, to obtain a value of detriment associated with 'moderate harm'. Published conversion factors between effective dose and DALY were used to calcu

Role of dicentric analysis in an overarching biodosimetry strategy for use following a nuclear detonation in an urban environment.

In the moments immediately following a nuclear detonation, casualties with a variety of injuries including trauma, burns, radiation exposure, and combined injuries would require immediate assistance. Accurate and timely radiation dose assessments, based on patient history and laboratory testing, are absolutely critical to support adequately the triage and treatment of those affected. This capability is also essential for ensuring the proper allocation of scarce resources and will support longitudinal evaluation of radiation-exposed individuals and populations. To maximize saving lives, casualt

[Occupational exposure to radiation].

Since the discovery of X-rays , overexposures and radiation injuries have been reported in both patients and persons exposed in the course of their professional duties. Each year, more than 2,500 million diagnostic radiological examinations, 32 million nuclear medicine examinations or treatment procedures and 5.5 million radiotherapy sessions are performed worldwide. Despite all precautions, avoidable incidents and accidents occur throughout the world every year , albeit with low frequency. Whereas diagnostic radiology is generally safe for patients and staff, interventional procedures (e.g. c…

Isolated Central Nervous System Infiltrated and Progressed to Acute Myeloid Leukemia from Chronic Myeloid Leukemia with e1a3 BCR-ABL1 Transcript: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

The search for medical treatments to prevent radiation-induced damage to gastrointestinal tissue is crucial as such injuries can be fatal. This study aimed to investigate the effects of apigenin (AP) on the gut microbiome of irradiated mice, as it is a promising radiation countermeasure. Male C57BL/6J mice were divided into four groups, with six mice in each group. Two groups were given food with apigenin (20 mg/kg body weight or AP 20) before and after exposure to 0 or 50 cGy of silicon (28Si) ions, while another two groups of mice received regular diet without apigenin (0 mg/kg body weight o

Pouchitis Associated With Pelvic Radiation for Prostate Cancer.

Radiation therapy is a viable option in managing potentially life-threatening malignancies including prostate cancer. It is known that pelvic radiation can result in injury of the distal large bowel with the development of radiation proctitis. Despite reports from retrospective studies, there is a lack of direct endoscopic and histologic evidence of external pelvic radiation injury to the ileal pouch-anal anastomosis. We present a case of a 68-year-old male with pouchitis resulting from pelvic radiation for prostate cancer.

Transcolonoscopic spraying formalin solution for hemorrhagic radiation proctitis: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation proctitis is a common complication that occurs as a result of radiation therapy used to treat pelvic malignancies. The most common and bothersome symptom resulting from radiation proctitis is rectal bleeding, which can be persistent or recurrent. This study aimed to review our experience and evaluate the efficacy and safety of transcolonoscopic spraying of formalin solution in patients with hemorrhagic radiation proctitis. METHODS: A total of 37 patients with hemorrhagic radiation proctitis, aged between 48 and 79 years (mean age 62.56 ± 8.48 years), were divided into th

Imaging of the post-radiation chest in lung cancer.

Radiation therapy using conventional fractionated external-beam or high-precision dose techniques including three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and proton therapy, is a key component in the treatment of patients with lung cancer. Knowledge of the radiation technique used, radiation treatment plan, expected temporal evolution of radiation-induced lung injury and patient-specific parameters, such as previous radiotherapy, concurrent chemoradiotherapy, and/or immunotherapy, is important in imaging interpretation. Holistic Treatment Incorporating Moist Wound Healing for Postoperative Radiation-Induced Perineal Ulcer in Rectal Malignancy: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced perineal ulcers are often refractory to conventional dry exposure therapies. This article reports a case of extensive radiation-induced ulceration successfully managed using a moist wound healing protocol. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old male developed progressive perianal, scrotal, and penile ulceration following radiotherapy for rectal carcinoma. Four weeks of conventional dry exposure therapy proved ineffective. Upon admission, the patient was transitioned to a holistic treatment incorporating moist wound healing. This approach resulted in complete reepithe

Ferulic Acid Interferes with Radioactive Intestinal Injury Through the DJ-1-Nrf2 and Sirt1-NF-κB-NLRP3 Pathways.

Radiation-induced intestinal injury is a common complication of radiotherapy for abdominal and pelvic malignancies. Due to its rapid proliferation, the small intestine is particularly sensitive to radiation, making it a critical factor limiting treatment. Ferulic acid (FA), a derivative of cinnamic acid, exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-radiation properties. In this study, we established a mouse model of radiation-induced intestinal injury using a dose of 11 Gy at a rate of 96.62 cGy/min. Our findings indicate that FA's protective effects against radiation-induced intestinal i

A case of radiation-induced subclavian artery stenosis treated with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty.

We report on a female patient who underwent a standard radical mastectomy and radiation therapy for right breast cancer at the age of 50 years without recurrence. At the age of 76 years, she started to experience fatigue in the right upper limb. The symptom gradually worsened and she was admitted to our hospital for further investigation. With computed tomography scan and angiography, we observed a high degree of subclavian artery (SCA) stenosis and asymptomatic right common carotid artery (CCA) stenosis. After undergoing carotid artery stenting to the right CCA stenosis at another hospital, w

Role of PET in Radiation Oncology: A Theranostic Perspective on Detection of Radiation-Induced Complications.

Radiation therapy remains essential in managing thoracic and head and neck malignancies, yet radiation-induced injury to surrounding normal tissues continues to pose significant clinical challenges. Traditional assessment of radiation complications relies on clinical symptoms and anatomic imaging, often detecting injury only after irreversible damage has occurred. This article reviews the emerging role of fluorodeoxyglucose PET/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) as a theranostic tool for early detection and quantitative assessment of radiation-induced complications across multiple organ systems.

[Management of radiation-induced intestinal injury:from multi-disciplinary team team to holistic integrative management].

Radiation-induced intestinal injury is a radiation injury of the colon and rectum after radiotherapy for pelvic malignant tumors. This condition affects multiple organs in the pelvis, making treatment challenging. In clinical practice, the most effective protocol is often determined through discussion by a multi-disciplinary team (MDT). However, due to the severity and complexity of radiation enteritis, many patients still experience poor diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Holistic integrative management (HIM) is a rapidly developing concept that has greatly enhanced clinical medicine in recent

Choosing the right diagnostic imaging modality in musculoskeletal diagnosis.

Radiological studies can confirm or rule out competing diagnoses for musculoskeletal injuries and pain. Obtaining a detailed history and physical examination is pivotal for localizing the pain generator and choosing the most appropriate imaging studies, based on the suspected injured tissue. Judicious use of imaging is important to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure, minimize cost, and avoid therapy targeting asymptomatic imaging abnormalities. This article compares and contrasts the diagnostic imaging commonly used for detecting musculoskeletal injuries.
