Radiation dermatitis can develop after fluoroscopy-guided interventional procedures. Cases of fluoroscopy-induced radiation dermatitis have been reported since 1996, mostly documented in the fields of radiology, cardiology and dermatology. Since diagnosis and treatment of fluoroscopy-induced radiation dermatitis can be difficult, high grade of suspicion is required. The extent of this reaction is determined by radiation dose, duration of exposure, type of procedure, and host factors and can be aggravated by concomitant use of photosensitizers. Follow-up is important after long and complicated

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological topical controls in the prevention of radiation dermatitis.
METHODS: Relevant clinical trials were identified through electronic searching databases CINAHL, CENTRAL, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Handsearching and gray literature searches were also performed to find additional references. Primary outcomes of interest were the development of radiation dermatitis and the time of occurrence of radiation dermatitis.
RESULTS: Thirteen randomized clinical trials were included in th

A 67-year-old woman presented with a firm plaque in the perineal region, 16 months after diagnosis of a high-grade basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the vagina and treatment by external beam radiation therapy and vaginal cuff brachytherapy. The differential diagnosis included radiation-induced morphea, radiation dermatitis, or, possibly, radiation-induced lichen sclerosus. Biopsy findings, including special staining, confirmed the diagnosis of radiation-induced lichen sclerosus. To our knowledge, this is the first report of radiation-induced lichen sclerosus of the vulvar region.

Intra-articular radiation synovectomy is an established and well documented therapy in rheumatology. A rare side effect is necrosis of surrounding tissue caused by leakage of the radionuclide. We describe the case of a 34-year old patient with rheumatoid arthritis who developed skin necrosis 4 weeks after an intra-articular radiation synovectomy of the left wrist. When these lesions are recognized early surgical therapy or hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be initiated.

Ipilimumab, monoclonal antibody against cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 and, radiotherapy are commonly used to treat unresectable and metastatic melanoma. As a result of upregulation of immune system with ipilimumab, many immune-related adverse effects, such as dermatitis, colitis, hepatitis, and hypophysitis, have been previously reported in literature. Typically, these effects are treated with high-dose steroids and mostly heal up. Here, we report a case who was receiving radiotherapy due to metastatic malignant melanoma with atypical generalized rash, which was enlarged with concurrent ipi

Radiation recall syndrome is an acute inflammatory reaction developing at anatomical sites of previously irradiated tissue, weeks to months after the completion of radiation therapy. The distribution pattern of inflammation typically involves, and remains limited to, the boundaries of prior radiation treatment fields. Several classical chemotherapy drugs have been reported to have the potential for causing radiation recall syndrome. With the increasing availability and expanding use of novel biologic and targeted therapy anticancer drugs, isolated reports of radiation recall syndrome secondary

Radiation dermatitis (RD) results from radiotherapy and often occurs within the first 4 weeks of treatment, although late effects also occur. While RD may resolve over time, it can have a profound effect on patients' quality of life and lead to dose modifications. A study group of international, interdisciplinary experts convened to develop RD prevention and treatment guidelines based on evidence from randomized, controlled trials. Evidence-based recommendations were developed after an extensive literature review. Randomized, controlled trials with standardized measurement of outcomes were con

We report a case of reconstruction of radiation ulcer on the chest wall and sternum osteomyelitis using a rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap. A case of 67-year-old woman, Halsted operation was performed for right breast cancer, 23 years ago. After 4 years, transcatheter arterial injection and radiation therapy was performed to treat recurrence of parasternal lymph nodes. Since then, she had been without recurrence of the tumor, but suffered from repeated scabbing of parasternal skin. In 2009, she suffered from pain, redness and purulent discharge of the wound, and diagnosed with sternum os

Radiotherapy remains the basic method of treatment of cancers. In association with surgery and chemotherapy allows to obtain higher percent of total recovery and to reduce radical operation area. The use of ionizing rays in craniofacial region risks of many complications. The typical treatment lasts 5-8 weeks, patient absorbs fractional doses once or twice a day 5 days per week. Early acute complications appear during treatment and 3 months after completing radiotherapy. They are usually reversible and last shortly. Late complications are observed within several months and even many years afte

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the epidemiological, clinical, and histopathological features of patients with cancer who develop widespread polymorphic and pruritic skin lesions following radiotherapy. PATIENTS, DESIGN, AND INTERVENTIONS: During phase 1, epidemiological and clinical features of 103 patients with cancer, 83 treated with radiotherapy (71 women and 12 men) and 20 controls who did not undergo radiotherapy (16 women and 4 men), were explored during 3 months (October 1995 to January 1996). During phase 2, in 30 additional patients with cancer who were treated with telecobalt or linear a

A high activity of combutec 2, prepared on the basis of soluble collagen, was demonstrated in patients with radiation injuries of the skin after the accident at Chernobyl. Combutec 2 can be recommended for local therapy of patients with skin radiation injuries in all periods of development of these changes.

Electron beam therapy applied to a lymph node metastasis from a squamous cell carcinoma was followed by the development of histologically and immunologically typical bullous pemphigoid, the lesions being initially strictly confined to the irradiation area. This observation suggests that the bullous pemphigoid antigen may be altered or unmasked by electron beam radiotherapy, leading subsequently to the production of autoantibodies. The disease in this case effectively responded to the administration of tetracycline and niacinamide, a therapeutic regimen described recently.
