Electromyographic parameters related to clenching level and jaw-jerk reflex in patients with a simple type of myogenous cranio-mandibular disorder.

A discriminant analysis has been applied on several electromyographic (EMG) parameters of the masseter and the anterior temporal muscles, related to clenching and the jaw-jerk reflex, to characterize jaw muscle function of patients with craniomandibular disorder (CMD) with respect to controls. The subject samples, matched for age, consisted of 20 females with myogenous CMD, and 20 symptom-free females. The jaw-jerk reflex was elicited by a downward-directed mandibular load, transmitted by a bite-fork causing a similar occlusion and bite-rise as a splint. The patients differed mainly from the c

Acute cardiopulmonary effects of pancuronium bromide in mechanically ventilated newborn infants.

The short-term effects of muscle relaxation with pancuronium bromide on arterial blood gas values, heart rate, and arterial blood pressure were studied in 49 neonates receiving mechanical ventilation. After pancuronium administration, mean PaO2 increased from 61.9 +/- 30.0 to 80.9 +/- 52.8 mm Hg (P = 0.006), mean PaCO2 decreased from 40.1 +/- 13.0 to 37.5 +/- 13.3 mm Hg (P = 0.03), and mean heart rate rose from 146.2 +/- 24.9 to 161.0 +/- 20.5 beats/min (P less than 0.001). Arterial blood pressure did not change significantly. When results were analyzed by diagnosis (meconium aspiration syndro

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Therapeutic Has Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Activity.

Otilonium bromide is a poorly absorbed oral medication used to control irritable bowel syndrome. It is thought to act as a muscle relaxant in the intestine. Here, we show that otilonium bromide has broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity, including against multidrug-resistant strains. Our results suggest otilonium bromide acts on enteric pathogens and may offer a new scaffold for poorly absorbed intestinal antimicrobial therapy.

Ferritin-Based Mild Magnetic Hyperthermia Therapy for Bladder Cancer: A Synergistic Anti-Inflammatory Strategy.

Bladder cancer treatment is challenged by tissue damage, inflammation, and resistance to mild hyperthermia. Magnetic hyperthermia therapy offers a promising solution, but issues such as rapid nanoparticle clearance and limited tumor retention still hinder its effectiveness. Here, we report a mild magnetic hyperthermia strategy that integrates pH-responsive magnetic ferritin with a glutathione-activated nitric oxide donor to sensitize tumors while minimizing off-target damage. Under an alternating magnetic field, ferritin-confined Fe3O4 cores generate subablative heat through relaxation losses,

[Temporo-mandibular joint pain dysfunction syndrome in children].

Otalgia is a common symptom in children. Otological examination usually reveals a local pathology as the causative agent. However, it does occur that otoscopy reveals normal ear drums and canals. The otologist must then review the causes of referred otalgia. We know that the ear is a nervous crossroad: vagus, trigeminal and third cervical nerve. The most common causes of referred otalgia are the teeth, the sinus, the mouth, the pharynx, and the larynx. If none of these factors is involved, one must then think about the painful temporomandibular dysfunction syndrome.

Integrating multimodal behavioral therapy into temporomandibular disorders management: A randomized attention-controlled trial using DC/TMD axis II outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) involve physical symptoms like pain and jaw dysfunction, and psychosocial factors including anxiety and depression, evaluated using Axis II of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). This study assessed a structured, multicomponent behavioral therapy program-integrating pain neuroscience education, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, and electromyographic biofeedback-as an adjunct to standard TMD care. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 120 TMD patients (ages 18-65) diagnosed via DC/TMD were

Psychological treatment of comorbid asthma and panic disorder in Latino adults: Results from a randomized controlled trial.

Confusion between panic and asthma symptoms can result in serious self-management errors. A cognitive behavior psychophysiological therapy (CBPT) intervention was culturally adapted for Latinos consisting of CBT for panic disorder (PD), asthma education, differentiation between panic and asthma symptoms, and heart rate variability biofeedback. An RCT compared CBPT to music and relaxation therapy (MRT), which included listening to relaxing music and paced breathing at resting respiration rates. Fifty-three Latino (primarily Puerto Rican) adults with asthma and PD were randomly assigned to CBPT …

[The impact of vibratory stimulation therapy on voice quality in hyperfunctional occupational dysphonia].

UNLABELLED: Hyperfunctional dysphonia is the most frequent type of occupational functional dysphonia. Pharmacotherapy, physiotherapy and psychotherapy are used in the treatment of occupational dysphonia. Vibratory massages of the regions of the larynx relax the external muscles of neck, which have an indirect impact on the tension of the vocal folds. PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to assess the impact of vibratory stimulation therapy on voice quality in patients with hyperfunctional occupational dysphonia treated pharmacologically. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty patients with hyperfunctional

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

NMS is a life-threatening, hyperpyrexic syndrome that follows the blockage of certain central dopaminergic receptor sites; it is commonly associated with the use of neuroleptic medications. Clinical signs usually include hyperthermia, altered mental status, muscle rigidity, and autonomic instability. Treatment is mainly supportive. Dopamine agonists and muscle relaxants are often used in therapy; however, their effectiveness has never been adequately determined in controlled studies.

Physiologic and pathologic belching.

Accumulation of air in the stomach increases gastric volume, which activates receptors in the gastric wall. A reflex is initiated, leading to relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, upward movement of the air through the esophagus, and finally passage through the upper esophageal sphincter, during which an audible belch can sometimes be heard. Excessive belching is often reported in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and functional dyspepsia. Often other symptoms are predominant, and these should be treated first. Sometimes patients present with excessive belching as an isolat

Acute Augmented Effect of Virtual Reality (VR)-Integrated Relaxation and Mindfulness Exercising on Anxiety and Insomnia Symptoms: A Retrospective Analysis of 103 Anxiety Disorder Patients With Prominent Insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental disorders and often accompanied with sleep disturbance which can in turn exacerbate anxiety symptoms, creating a vicious cycle. In addition to psychopharmacological therapy, the effectiveness of psychotherapy as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating anxiety disorders and insomnia has been well documented and widely accepted, but it is labor-intensive and costly. However, virtual reality (VR)-integrated CBT may improve this condition but needs more evidences to support its extensive application in routine clinical practice.

Efficiency of physiotherapy with Caycedian Sophrology on children with asthma: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most common chronic disease in pediatrics. Along with the usual drug therapy using corticosteroids and bronchodilators, some interest has been shown for adjuvant therapies, such as sophrology. However, the level of evidence for non-pharmaceutical therapies in asthma remains low, especially in children. This study aimed to assess whether in children with asthma, peak expiratory flow (PEF) improved more after a sophrology session alongside standard treatment than after standard treatment alone. METHODS: We carried out a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial

Update on Non-surgical Treatments for Lumbar Pain.

Low back pain (LBP) is a very prevalent clinical condition worldwide. Approximately 90% of the cases are of nonspecific LBP, due to the lack of anatomopathological changes as potential causes of pain. A more assertive therapeutic approach requires identifying red or yellow flags and diagnosing the pain pattern (nociceptive, neuropathic, nociplastic, or mixed pain). Acute LBP prognosis is favorable in most cases, and the therapeutic objective is to prevent chronicity. For chronic LBP, the goals include pain reduction and improvements in functionality and quality of life. In acute and chronic ca

Perception of juvenile delinquents of group therapy approaches.

The present study focuses on juvenile delinquents' perception of two procedures used in group therapy. Eleven juvenile delinquents, participants of a probation program, were asked to share their experience with group therapy. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the interviews with the participants, the specifics of verbal and action procedures were examined. Verbal procedures offer clients a greater opportunity for emotional experience and subsequent cognitive processing of the experience leading to personal growth. The action procedures are, in contrast, a way of deepening the c
