Influences of Differentiated Residence and Workplace Location on the Identification of Spatiotemporal Patterns of Dengue Epidemics: A Case Study in Guangzhou, China.

The location of the infections is the basic data for precise prevention and control of dengue fever (DF). However, most studies default to residence address as the place of infection, ignoring the possibility that cases are infected at other places (e.g., workplace address). This study aimed to explore the spatiotemporal patterns of DF in Guangzhou from 2016 to 2018, differentiating workplace and residence. In terms of temporal and spatial dimensions, a case weight assignment method that differentiates workplace and residence location was proposed, taking into account the onset of cases around

Neighborhood Context and Financial Strain as Predictors of Marital Interaction and Marital Quality in African American Couples.

Demographic characteristics, family financial strain, neighborhood-level economic disadvantage, and state of residence were tested as predictors of observed warmth, hostility, and self-reported marital quality. Participants were 202 married African American couples who resided in a range of neighborhood contexts. Neighborhood-level economic disadvantage predicted lower warmth during marital interactions, as did residence in the rural south. Consistent with the family stress model (e.g., Conger & Elder, 1994), family financial strain predicted lower perceived marital quality. Unexpectedly, neig

Mental illness and a high-risk, elderly Japanese population: characteristic differences related to gender and residential location.

PURPOSE: Examining the sociodemographic determinants of psychological distress is important in identifying specific subgroups in need of further intervention. However, there are few studies focusing on older populations and on the role of gender or location of residence. To try to clarify characteristics of a population at high risk for mental illness, we examined the sociodemographic determinants of psychological distress in older adults living in three different locations. METHODS: A mail survey was used to collect data on levels of psychological distress and sociodemographic characteristic

A method for assessing occupational dermal exposure to permanent hair dyes.

Hairdressers have an increased risk of developing occupational skin diseases due to exposure to skin irritants and sensitizers. In the present work a method of assessing dermal exposure to permanent hair dyes was developed. The sampling performance characteristics of hand wash sampling with bag rinsing were studied for five hair dye compounds. The effect of residence time, sample load and different matrices were studied. Thirty volunteers were exposed to a reference solution of these compounds and to commercial hair dye products. The sampling efficiency after 5 min residence time was between 7

Social determinants of nonadherence to tuberculosis treatment in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This study aimed to identify the individual and environmental determinants of nonadherence to tuberculosis (TB) treatment in selected districts in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, in Argentina. We conducted a cross-sectional study using a hierarchical model. Using primary and secondary data, logistic regression was performed to analyze two types of determinants. The likelihood of nonadherence to treatment was greatest among male patients. The following factors led to a greater likelihood of nonadherence to treatment: patients living in a home without running water; head of household without

Creating a home to promote recovery: the physical environments of Oxford House.

The interior and exterior physical characteristics of substance abuse recovery program dwellings (11 woman, 44 men) from three geographic sections of the United States were assessed at creating a "house-as-home" for residents. Although each house was independently governed and operated by residents, results indicated vast similarities among the interior characteristics, amenities, and structural aspects. These rented dwellings also had similar well-maintained exterior characteristics, despite their geographic locations. Follow-up interviews of former residents indicated that these house charac

Local community identification improves wellbeing by reducing loneliness: Longitudinal evidence from two studies.

Loneliness is a significant determinant of mental and physical health which has many root causes at local community level. Building on the Social Identity Approach to Health we test a longitudinal version of McNamara et al.'s (2021) neighbourhood identity model of wellbeing, which links local community identification to wellbeing via reduced loneliness. Study 1 was a two-wave survey of residents in mid-Nottinghamshire, UK (T1 N = 879; T2 N = 216). Mediation analyses showed that, over a one-year period, changes in community identification predicted increases in wellbeing via increases in percei

Associations between neighbourhood characteristics, alcohol use patterns, and physical activity in midlife - the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966.

PURPOSE: Despite extensive research, links between individuals' environments and alcohol use remain inconsistent. This has renewed interest in neighbourhood determinants of alcohol use. We examined whether neighbourhood characteristics are related to alcohol use in urban and rural areas, and whether physical activity modifies associations. METHODS: Cross-sectional study utilised 46-year follow-up data from the population-based Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 6,655). Alcohol use was classified into abstinence, moderate (> 0 ≤ 30/20 g/day men/women), and heavy use (> 30/20 g/day). Neigh

Neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and school stock inhaler utilization in a statewide program.

BACKGROUND: The burden of asthma is disproportionately experienced by children from marginalized populations, including those from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Children can benefit from support beyond the home to counter negative asthma outcomes. Schools can stock quick-acting inhalers to ensure access to medication for any individual experiencing respiratory distress. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the relationship between stock inhaler use within schools and socioeconomic neighborhood disadvantage of schools. METHODS: An observational study examined stock inhaler events

Association of social determinants of health and physical functioning among breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to address the relationship between social determinants of health (both individual and neighborhood levels) to understand more fully how social conditions are associated with physical functioning among breast cancer survivors (BCS). METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a national sample of breast cancer survivors recruited via Institutional Review Board-approved social media (i.e., Facebook) and online cancer-affiliated resource sites (e.g., Pink Ribbon Connection, Dr. Susan Love Foundation). BCS provided their address and demographic factors an

Neighbourhood Social Vulnerability and Preterm Birth Risk Among Infants With Trisomy 21: A Statewide Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Residing in socioeconomically vulnerable areas is known to be associated with increased preterm birth (PTB) risk in the general population. However, the relationship between social vulnerability and PTB remains unexplored among infants with trisomy 21, who experience more than twice the PTB rate of the general population. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to examine the association between maternal socioeconomic vulnerability, as measured by the SVI, and PTB among infants with trisomy 21. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among infants with trisomy 21 born in

The Role of Social Support as a Buffer Against Adverse Birth Outcomes Among People Experiencing Neighbourhood Deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown an association between neighbourhood context and adverse birth outcomes, but with high heterogeneity. OBJECTIVE: To examine the degree to which social support buffers against the adverse effects of neighbourhood deprivation on preterm birth and small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of data from the nuMoM2b (Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-To-Be) longitudinal cohort study, which recruited participants between 2010 and 2013. We estimated prevalence differences (PD) for area deprivation index

How Do Egocentric Sexual Networks Affect Male Migrants' HIV Sexual Behavior Patterns in Gender-Imbalanced China? The Moderating Role of Migration and Neighborhoods.

In gender-imbalanced China, migrant populations are a high-risk group for HIV transmission. Informed by the social-ecological model, this study investigated the association between egocentric sexual networks and HIV sexual behavior patterns, evaluating the moderating effects of migration experiences and neighborhood characteristics among male migrants in China's gender imbalance context. Data from two cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2017 in China, targeting never-married men in rural areas and male migrants (married and unmarried) in urban settings, were collected. The study included 713

Disparities in neighborhood food environment and cognitive decline among US older adults: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in neighborhood food environments in the United States, attributed to numerous complex economic, social, and political factors, likely to contribute to disparities in access to healthy food and cognitive function in older adults. However, the role of food environment in cognitive function is not well understood. Accordingly, this study examined the association of residing a low food access and low-income neighborhood with changes in cognitive function among older adults in urban areas. METHODS: This is a cohort study leveraging existing datasets. The 2010 Food Access R

The association of neighborhood-level deprivation with glioblastoma outcomes: a single center cohort study.

Glioblastoma is the most common primary brain malignancy. Though literature has suggested the association of glioblastoma outcomes and socioeconomic status, there is limited evidence regarding the association of neighborhood-level socioeconomic deprivation on glioblastoma outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of neighborhood-level socioeconomic deprivation on glioblastoma survival. We retrospectively reviewed all adult glioblastoma patients seen at a single institution from 2008 to 2023. Neighborhood deprivation was assessed via Area Deprivation Index (ADI), with higher ADI

Neighborhood Determinants of Health as a Composite Index: Comparing Area-Based Indices in Public Health Research.

Neighborhood conditions significantly impact health and well-being, leading public health agencies to focus interventions on disadvantaged areas. Yet, a growing number of composite indices have been developed to measure neighborhood opportunity, deprivation, or vulnerability, and little is known about how they compare in relation to health. Our study compares 13 composite indices of neighborhood conditions commonly used in public health research. Using data for over 57,000 US census tracts, we evaluate correlations among indices and assess their associations with four health outcomes-poor ment
