Paradoxical brain embolism as a cause of central retinal artery occlusion: a case report.

A 79-year-old right-handed woman was admitted to hospital following sudden onset of severe visual loss in the left eye. Left central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) was diagnosed. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed an asymptomatic hyperintensity in left middle cerebral artery territory. Transcranial Doppler and transesophageal echocardiography revealed patent foramen ovale. No other embolic sources were identified in the carotid artery, aortic arch, or heart. We report herein a case of CRAO caused by paradoxical brain embolism.

Convulsions, hemiparesis and central retinal artery occlusion due to left atrial myxoma in child.

Multiple embolizations were the hallmark of the disease in an 8-year-old boy with a left atrial myxoma. Embolizations occurred initially in both hands and legs, later in the brain with generalized seizures and hemiparesis, and finally in the left eye with occlusion of the central retinal artery and consecutive severe visual impairment. Echocardiography demonstrated the tumour which was removed without complications.

Anterior segment necrosis following treatment of central retinal artery occlusion: a clinicopathologic case report.

A 45-year-old man with an internal carotid artery occlusion, cerebral hemispheric infarction, and an ipsilateral central retinal artery occlusion developed anterior segment necrosis after retrobulbar injection of lidocaine hydrochloride (Xylocaine) for treatment of an occlusion of the central retinal artery. Multiple embolic plaques in the retinal circulation with occlusion of the posterior ciliary arteries were found. The clinical and postmortem histopathologic findings are presented.
