OBJECTIVES: Adipose tissue in vocal fold lipoinjection is currently used to treat patients affected by laryngeal hemiplegia or anatomical defects. Cholecystoduodenal fistula, a rare complication of biliary lithiasis, occurs in 0.5% to 3% of patients affected by cholelithiasis. Diagnosis is not easy and is usually incidental at surgery. The literature guidelines call for a laparoscopic approach to treating these patients; here, however, we report a case of a very elderly patient in which, among other reasons, open surgery was the treatment of choice to decrease morbidity and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Infection of mice with the Armstrong strain of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMVARM) leads to a robust immune response and efficient viral clearance. PTX3 is a prototypic long pentraxin that plays a non-redundant role in innate immunity against selected pathogens and in female fertility. Here, we report that the infertility of Ptx3(-/-) mice is associated with severe abnormalities of the cumulus oophorus and failure of in vivo, but not in vitro, oocyte fertilization. Food poisoning due to staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) affects hundreds of thousands of people each year. Little is known about how SEs initiate immune responses and cause pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that cultured human intestinal myofibroblasts (IMFs) bind SEs in an MHC class II-dependent fashion. IMFs respond to SE exposure with increased secretion of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha.
