Comprehensive surveillance of the antibody response to Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. in small ruminants in China.

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the etiological agent of Lyme disease, is tick transmitted and has a wide range of mammalian reservoirs in nature, including both wild and domestic animals. To understand the seroprevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. in small ruminants will add value to the risk analysis of Lyme disease. The current study was intended to map the potential endemic regions of Lyme disease by large-scale investigation of sera from sheep and goats. In this study, a total of 2,758 serum samples from sheep and goats in 21 provinces located in 40 different districts of China were tested f…

Molecular characterisation of lineage IV peste des petits ruminants virus using multi gene sequence data.

Peste des petits ruminants is responsible for an economically important plague of small ruminants that is endemic across much of the developing world. Here we describe the detection and characterisation of a PPR virus from a recent outbreak in Tamil Nadu, India. We demonstrate the isolation of PPR virus from rectal swab and highlight the potential spread of disease to in-contact animals through faecal materials and use of faecal material as non-invasive method of sampling for susceptible wild ruminants. Finally we have performed a comprehensive 'multi-gene' assessment of lineage IV isolates of…

Toll-like receptor responses to Peste des petits ruminants virus in goats and water buffalo.

Ovine rinderpest or goat plague is an economically important and contagious viral disease of sheep and goats, caused by the Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV). Differences in susceptibility to goat plague among different breeds and water buffalo exist. The host innate immune system discriminates between pathogen associated molecular patterns and self antigens through surveillance receptors known as Toll like receptors (TLR). We investigated the role of TLR and cytokines in differential susceptibility of goat breeds and water buffalo to PPRV. We examined the replication of PPRV in peripher…

Early events following experimental infection with Peste-Des-Petits ruminants virus suggest immune cell targeting.

Peste-des-petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is a viral pathogen that causes a devastating plague of small ruminants. PPRV is an economically significant disease that continues to be a major obstacle to the development of sustainable agriculture across the developing world. The current understanding of PPRV pathogenesis has been heavily assumed from the closely related rinderpest virus (RPV) and other morbillivirus infections alongside data derived from field outbreaks. There have been few studies reported that have focused on the pathogenesis of PPRV and very little is known about the processes un…

The use of ultrasonography to study teratogenicity in ruminants: evaluation of Ipomoea carnea in goats.

BACKGROUND: Ipomoea carnea (I. carnea) is a poisonous plant found in Brazil and other tropical countries that often poison livestock. The plant contains the alkaloids calystegines and mainly swainsonine, which inhibit cellular enzymes and cause systematic cell death. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perinatal effects of I. carnea in goats. METHODS: Forty-seven pregnant goats were randomly allocated into 5 treatment groups and given the following doses (g/kg BW) of I. carnea: 0 (IC0), 1.0 (IC1), 3.0 (IC3), 5.0 (IC5) and 7.5 (IC7). The treatment animals were given fresh I. carnea

Salient lesions in domestic ruminants infected with the emerging so-called Schmallenberg virus in Germany.

The so-called Schmallenberg virus (SBV), first detected in a German town of the same name in October 2011, is a novel emerging orthobunyavirus in Europe causing malformations and severe economic loss in ruminants. This report describes lesions in 40 sheep, 2 goats, and 16 cattle naturally infected with SBV as determined by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The most common macroscopic changes were arthrogryposis, vertebral malformations, brachygnathia inferior, and malformations of the central nervous system, including hydranencephaly, porencephaly, hydroce…

Evaluation of the presence of Rickettsia slovaca infection in domestic ruminants in Catalonia, Northeastern Spain.

Rickettsia slovaca is the etiological agent of the human disease tick-borne lymphadenopathy (TIBOLA) transmitted by Dermacentor spp. ticks. In our area, Dermacentor marginatus is the most important tick vector; adult ticks feed on mammals, especially ungulates such as wild boars and domestic ruminants. The epidemiology of tick-transmitted diseases describes a wild cycle and a domestic cycle and both are connected by ticks. To identify the role of domestic ruminants in the transmission and maintenance of R. slovaca infection, blood samples from sheep (n=95), goats (n=91), and bullfighting cattl…

Isolation and identification of virulent peste des petits ruminants viruses from PPR outbreaks in India.

In this study, three outbreaks of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in goats and sheep flocks with high morbidity and considerable mortality were recorded at Jhansi and Revati in Uttar Pradesh and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, India during 2003-2006. Clinical samples were collected from the affected flocks for laboratory investigation. The PPR virus (PPRV) antigen/nucleic acid in the infected tissues/swab materials was demonstrated by using sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction techniques, and the antibody to PPRV in serum samples was…

Global distribution of peste des petits ruminants virus and prospects for improved diagnosis and control.

Viral diseases of farm animals, rather than being a diminishing problem across the world, are now appearing with regularity in areas where they have never been seen before. Across the developing world, viral pathogens such as peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) place a huge disease burden on agriculture, in particular affecting small ruminant production and in turn increasing poverty in some of the poorest parts of the world. PPRV is currently considered as one of the main animal transboundary diseases that constitutes a threat to livestock production in many developing countries, particul…

Full genome sequence of peste des petits ruminants virus, a member of the Morbillivirus genus.

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) causes an acute febrile illness in small ruminant species, mostly sheep and goats. PPRV is a member of the Morbillivirus genus which includes measles, rinderpest (cattle plague), canine distemper, phocine distemper and the morbilliviruses found in whales, porpoises and dolphins. Full length genome sequences for these morbilliviruses are available and reverse genetic rescue systems have been developed for the viruses of terrestrial mammals, with the exception of PPRV. This paper presents the first published full length genome sequence for PPRV. The genome…

Bilayer tablets based on poly (epsilon-caprolactone) and polymethylmethacrilates as controlled-release systems for ruminants.

Rumen-stable devices ensure a protection of active ingredients against chemical degradation and bacterial fermentation processes that occur in the rumen. These systems should also provide postruminal bioavailability and controlled release of the active ingredient. The objective of this study was the preparation of bilayer tablets as rumen-stable delivery systems, designed for the oral administration of active ingredients (folic acid) to ruminants. The tablets are composed of two layers: layer A ("high-density layer") constituted by poly (epsilon-caprolactone) mixed with iron powder and charact…

Role of Hippoboscidae flies as potential vectors of Bartonella spp. infecting wild and domestic ruminants.

The putative role of biting flies in Bartonella transmission among ruminants was investigated. Amplification of the Bartonella citrate synthase gene from 83 Hippoboscidae was detected in 94% of 48 adult Lipoptena cervi flies, 71% of 17 adult Hippobosca equina flies, 100% of 20 adult Melophagus ovinus flies, and 100% of 10 M. ovinus pupae. Our findings suggest that Hippoboscidae play a role in the transmission of Bartonella among ruminants. The vertical transmission of Bartonella in M. ovinus and the presence of Bartonella DNA in all samples suggest a symbiotic association between Bartonella an…

[Bovine spongiform encephalopathy in ruminants and the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans].

The feeding of meat and bone meal which was contaminated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) infectivity led to a huge epidemic in the British cattle population. After the emergence of a new variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases (nvCJD) in 1996, European consumers lost confidence in beef meat. Given the coincidence by time and place and disease and agent specific characteristics, it must be assumed that nvCJD is caused by the transmission of BSE agent to man. This article gives an overview over the characteristics and diagnosis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, namely

The relative roles of body size and feeding type on activity time of temperate ruminants.

Recently, there has been some critical testing of whether body size or feeding type (CS: concentrate selectors, IF: intermediate feeders, GR: grass-roughage eaters) is the most important determinant of physiological aspects of ruminant ecology, whereas little has been done on behavioral aspects like activity time. Different predictions regarding the relationships between activity time and body weight/feeding type were tested with activity time data from 18 temperate ruminants. Activity time decreased allometrically with increasing body weight, but there was also a tendency for an effect of fee…

Abdominal chemo- and mechanosensitivity in ruminants and its role in the control of food intake.

Ruminant animals have evolved a large and complex set of stomachs which allow fermentation of fibrous food by symbiotic micro-organisms. The … which have been implicated in the control of intake. It is relatively easy to prepare and maintain ruminants with a rumen fistula and many studies have shown the effects of such manipulations as distension of balloons in the rumen on voluntary intake. With fibrous, slowly digested feeds intake is primarily limited by rumen distension. With more rapidly dig …

Incidence of liver fluke infections (Fasciola gigantica and Dicrocoelium hospes) in ruminants in northern Nigeria.

One thousand and twenty-four cattle, 550 sheep and 1,748 goats slaughtered in a rural slaughter slab during 1973 to 1975 were examined for evidence of liverfluke infections. The prevalence rate of Fasciola gigantica and Dicrocoelium hospes infections was respectively 65.4% and 56.0% in cattle, 40.8 and 13.1% in sheep and 17.6 and 5.2% in goats. Other trematodes detected were Schistosoma bovis and paramphistomes. The seasonal incidence of F. gigantica as well as of D. hospes was highest during and directly after the rainy season. The lower prevalence rate of F. gigantica, especially in the youn

Usually, I don't ruminate, only from time to time: disentangling the associations between trait and state measures of rumination and affect at multiple timescales.

Recent experience sampling research on affective functioning has emphasised the importance of short-term dynamics, yet rarely evaluates whether momentary measures are better explained by stable individual differences or by within-individual fluctuations. To address this issue, we (1) decomposed the variance in momentary affect explained by rumination across the between- and within-person levels, and (2) compared the predictive validity of state-based (mean state) and global (trait) self-report rumination measures of between-person differences. Our sample comprised 247 individuals who received

Effects of Ruminal Administration of Propylene Glycol or Sucrose on Ruminal, Blood, and Hepatic Parameters in Nonlactating Cows With High Plasma Nonesterified Fatty Acid Concentrations.

Elevated blood nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentration in prepartum increases the risk of postpartum diseases. This study evaluated whether intraruminal propylene glycol (PG) or sucrose (SC) administration could mitigate elevated blood NEFA induced by intravenous lipid infusion. Four nonlactating, nonpregnant Holstein cows fitted with rumen cannulas were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design: intravenous saline infusion and ruminal administration of water (S + WT), lipid infusion and administration of water (L + WT), lipid infusion and PG administration (L + PG), and lipid infusion and SC
