Inhibition in task switching: The reliability of the n - 2 repetition cost.

The n - 2 repetition cost seen in task switching is the effect of slower response times performing a recently completed task (e.g. an ABA sequence) compared to performing a task that was not recently completed (e.g. a CBA sequence). This cost is thought to reflect cognitive inhibition of task representations and as such, the n - 2 repetition cost has begun to be used as an assessment of individual differences in inhibitory control; however, the reliability of this measure has not been investigated in a systematic manner. The current study addressed this important issue. Seventy-two participant

Brooding Rumination and Internalizing Symptoms in Childhood: Investigating Symptom Specificity in a Multi-Wave Prospective Study.

Specificity of brooding rumination as a cognitive vulnerability for anxiety and depression was examined using the tripartite theory as a framework. The three factors of the tripartite theory (negative affect, positive affect, and physiological hyperarousal) were included in the same structural equation model (latent growth curves) to test three competing hypotheses: brooding rumination as a depression-specific vulnerability (i.e., brooding uniquely predicts shared negative affect + specific positive affect), anxiety-specific vulnerability (i.e., brooding predicts shared negative affect + speci

Rumination and self-reflection in stress narratives and relations to psychological functioning.

The longitudinal study aims to expand what is known about the costs and benefits of narrating stressful experiences by exploring changes in rumination within the narrative process and comparing it to changes in self-reflection. Rumination (e.g., brooding, self-criticism, and negative emotions) and self-reflection were measured in stress narratives of 56 college students. There were several goals: (1) examine changes in narrative rumination and narrative self-reflection over 3 days of writing, (2) examine the relations among the changes in narrative rumination variables and narrative self-refle

The ABCs of depression: integrating affective, biological, and cognitive models to explain the emergence of the gender difference in depression.

In adulthood, twice as many women as men are depressed, a pattern that holds in most nations. In childhood, girls are no more depressed than boys, but more girls than boys are depressed by ages 13 to 15. Although many influences on this emergent gender difference in depression have been proposed, a truly integrated, developmental model is lacking. The authors propose a model that integrates affective (emotional reactivity), biological (genetic vulnerability, pubertal hormones, pubertal timing and development) and cognitive (cognitive style, objectified body consciousness, rumination) factors a

Exploring eco-anxiety in Italian adolescents: psychometric evaluation of the Climate Change Anxiety Scale and theoretical insights into the association with pro-environmental attitudes.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change significantly impacts the health and future of adolescents, yet they have limited ability to prevent its effects, leaving them especially vulnerable to climate anxiety. The present study aims to first explore the psychometric properties of the Climate Change Anxiety Scale among adolescents in Italy (Study 1), and to investigate the psychological pathways through which climate change anxiety impacts adolescents' pro-environmental attitudes, examining the mediating roles of climate change worry and rumination related to eco-anxiety (Study 2). METHODS: In Study 1, th

A randomized controlled trial of a self-guided mobile app targeting repetitive negative thought to prevent depression in university students: study protocol of the Nurture-U Reducing Worry prevention trial.

BACKGROUND: Tackling poor mental health in university students has been identified as a priority in higher education. However, there are few evidence-based prevention initiatives designed for students. Repetitive Negative Thought (RNT, e.g. worry, rumination) is elevated in university students and is a well-established vulnerability factor for anxiety and depression. Furthermore, there are now evidence-based cognitive-behavioural interventions to tackle RNT. A mobile self-help cognitive-behavioural app targeting RNT, adapted for students may therefore be an effective, scalable, and acceptable

The neural systems of emotion regulation and abnormalities in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental disorder characterized by aberrant emotion regulation. The capacity for emotion regulation stems from diverse neural circuits including higher level cognitive structures involved in processing contextual information, and lower level limbic structures involved in triggering emotional expression. Cognitive theories of depression posit that the MDD-specific abnormalities in emotional control derive itself from dysfunctional cognitive processes including biased attention, rumination, and altered information processing and memory. The main objectives of t

Do cognitive coping and goal adjustment strategies used shortly after myocardial infarction predict depressive outcomes 1 year later?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which cognitive and goal-related coping strategies used shortly after myocardial infarction predicted depressive outcomes 1 year later. SUBJECT AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 88 persons who had experienced a myocardial infarction 3 to 12 months before first data assessment. Cognitive coping and goal adjustment strategies were assessed at time 1 by the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and the Goal Obstruction Questionnaire, respectively. Depressive symptoms were assessed at both time 1 and time 2 by the Hosp

Mindfulness Training with a Fencing Athlete Who Was Troubled by an Uncharacteristic Inability to Perform Well Competitively: A Case Report.

Positive thinking is one of the psychological skills that mental training programs aim to help athletes cultivate in order to enhance performance. It has been noted, however, that some athletes do not find positive thinking effective for that purpose. This case report describes a fencing athlete who used positive thinking to cope with negative ruminations prior to a competition and then stopped using positive thinking and engaged in mindfulness. As a result of applying mindfulness, the patient developed the ability to take part in competitions without obsessing and without negative ruminations

Interaction of Biological Stress Recovery and Cognitive Vulnerability for Depression in Adolescence.

Major Depressive Disorder is a common mental illness with rates increasing during adolescence. This has led researchers to examine developmental antecedents of depression. This study examined the association between depressive symptoms and the interaction between two empirically supported risk factors for depression: poor recovery of the biological stress system as measured through heart rate and cortisol, and cognitive vulnerabilities as indexed by rumination and a negative cognitive style. Adolescents (n = 127; 49 % female) completed questionnaires and a social stress task to elicit a stress

Processing mode during repetitive thinking in socially anxious individuals: evidence for a maladaptive experiential mode.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence from the depression literature suggests that an analytical processing mode adopted during repetitive thinking leads to maladaptive outcomes relative to an experiential processing mode. To date, in socially anxious individuals, the impact of processing mode during repetitive thinking related to an actual social-evaluative situation has not been investigated. We thus tested whether an analytical processing mode would be maladaptive relative to an experiential processing mode during anticipatory processing and post-event rumination. METHODS: High and low socia

Understanding and predicting future relapse in depression from resting state functional connectivity and self-referential processing.

BACKGROUND: The recurrent nature of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) asks for a better understanding of mechanisms underlying relapse. Previously, self-referential processing abnormalities have been linked to vulnerability for relapse. We investigated whether abnormalities in self-referential cognitions and functioning of associated brain-networks persist upon remission and predict relapse. METHODS: Remitted recurrent MDD patients (n = 48) and never-depressed controls (n = 23) underwent resting-state fMRI scanning at baseline and were additionally assessed for their implicit depressed self-ass

Predictors of smartphone addiction in adolescents with depression: combing the machine learning and moderated mediation model approach.

Smartphone addiction (SA) significantly impacts the physical and mental health of adolescents, and can further exacerbate existing mental health issues in those with depression. However, fewer studies have focused on the predictors of SA in adolescents with depression. This study employs machine learning methods to identify key risk factors for SA, using the interpretable SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method to enhance interpretability. Additionally, by constructing a mediation moderation model, the interactions between significant risk factors are analyzed. The study included 2203 adol

Predictors of dropout in cognitive processing therapy for PTSD: An examination of in-session treatment processes.

Dropout rates for treatments for adult posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are high. Process research can reveal client factors during treatment that predict dropout. An observational coding system was used to code client processes in audio-recorded early sessions of cognitive processing therapy (CPT), a gold-standard treatment for PTSD. Data are from a randomized controlled noninferiority trial of CPT and written exposure therapy (WET), with higher rates of dropout in CPT than WET (39.7% vs. 6.4%). Participants in this study were 53 treatment-seeking adults with PTSD who were in the CPT arm

The Impact of COVID-19 Outbreak on Emotional and Cognitive Vulnerability in Iranian Women With Breast Cancer.

The psychological cost on emotional well-being due to the collateral damage brought about by COVID-19 in accessing oncological services for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment has been documented by recent studies in the United Kingdom. The current study set out to examine the effect of delays to scheduled oncology services on emotional and cognitive vulnerability in women with a breast cancer diagnosis in Iran, one of the very first countries to be heavily impacted by COVID-19. One hundred thirty-nine women with a diagnosis of primary breast cancer answered a series of online questionnaires

Sequential influences of emotion regulation and rumination in trait mindfulness-depression relationships.

Depression is a common mental health disorder affecting millions worldwide. Pharmacotherapies are partially effective, but numerous side effects often make them unfavorable. Recent investigations show that mindfulness meditation effectively mitigates depression-symptoms but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we examined the sequential influence of emotion regulation (ER) and rumination tendencies to explore trait mindfulness (TM) effects on depression-symptoms. 1000 undergraduates provided ratings on their depression-symptoms, mindfulness-experience, TM, ER strategy-use and rumina

Can an app designed to reduce repetitive negative thinking decrease depression and anxiety in young people? Results from a randomized controlled prevention trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rates of mental health disorders are rising among adolescents and young adults. Therefore, scalable methods for preventing psychopathology in these age groups are needed. As repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a risk factor for depression and anxiety disorders, targeting RNT via smartphone app promises to be an effective, scalable strategy. The current three-arm, parallel group, randomized controlled trial tested whether a self-help app designed to reduce RNT decreased psychopathological symptoms and RNT in adolescents and young adults at risk for mental disorders.

Limited Validity of Breath-Counting as a Measure of Mindfulness in Ruminative Adolescents.

Objective measurement of mindfulness could help us understand the mechanisms of meditation interventions and how individuals vary in their disposition to be mindful. One proposed measure is the breath-counting task (BCT), which measures how accurately one can count cycles of their breath. Breath counting, which involves sustained attention, meta-awareness, and an internal locus of attention, has been shown in adults to be related to measures of mindfulness even when controlling for established attentional measures. In this study, we test the psychometrics of the BCT in a convenience sample of

Nature lifts when feeling low: Daily high and low awe nature clips decrease repetitive negative thinking and dampening and increase subjective happiness in adults.

Exposure to nature can enhance mental well-being, making nature-based interventions promising for the treatment and prevention of mental health problems like depression. Given the decreased self-focus and sense of self-diminishment associated with awe, the present study investigated the impact of exposure to awe-evoking nature on two key risk and maintenance factors of depression-repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and dampening of positive feelings-and on subjective happiness. In a randomized controlled trial, we tested the effects of exposure to awe-evoking nature clips through a 1-week inter

Exploring the association between sleep problems and loneliness in adolescents: Potential mediating effects of rumination and resilience.

Sleep problems positively predict loneliness to a large extent, which would harm adolescent health. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism. This research investigates the potential mediating roles of rumination and resilience in the relation among adolescents and further examines the changing relationships. In Study 1, 1056 adolescents from two schools completed self-reported measures of sleep problems, loneliness, rumination, and resilience. We found that sleep problems were positively associated with loneliness, and that rumination and resilience mediated this relationship,
