A case of scleroderma in a woman with carcinoid syndrome is described and the similarities between our case and those in the literature are reviewed. The carcinoid tumours were all of midgut origin and liver metastases were present. All subsequently developed fibrotic heart disease and none had clinical features or autoantibodies suggestive of systemic sclerosis. The association between carcinoid syndrome and particular features of scleroderma is likely to be more than fortuitous.

A 22-year-old female with morphea-like lesions, deep subcutaneous nodules and lipoatrophic areas of the skin on lateral aspects of the upper arms, on the breasts and on the buttocks is described. In 1990 a biopsy specimen obtained from a subcutaneous nodule showed hyaline necrosis of fat tissue; there were no epidermal changes. Direct immunofluorescence revealed granular deposits of IgM at the dermo-epidermal junction of the skin overlying the subcutaneous nodule. In a biopsy specimen taken at the onset of the disease in 1988, hyaline sclerosis of the deep dermis, follicular hyperkeratosis and

Morphea and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus are cutaneous diseases that are manifest by an early edematous stage, followed later by sclerosis and atrophy. They share features with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans and erythema chronicum migrans, diseases that have been linked to infection by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. A modified silver stain was used to identify the presence of spirochetes in skin biopsy specimens of patients with morphea and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. Spirochetal forms were identified in the lesional skin of 10 of 25 patients with morphea and in 10 of 21 cases

A rare case of linear scleroderma with plaques of morphea in hemicorporeal distribution and subclinical systemic involvement is presented. Its possibility of progression into systemic sclerosis, which has not been reported earlier, is discussed.

Hypergamma-globulinemia and eosinophilia in the peripheral blood were found in a 4-year-old girl with scleroderma-like lesions within the upper and lower limbs. Histological examination excluded scleroderma. After 6 weeks of treatment with steroids, almost a complete retreat of scleroderma-like lesions was achieved.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Scleroderma and other autoimmune-induced connective tissue diseases are characterized by dysfunctions in the immune system, connective tissue and the vasculature. We are focusing on systemic sclerosis (SSc)-associated pulmonary hypertension, which remains a leading cause of death with only a 50-60% of 2-year survival rate.
RECENT FINDINGS: Much research and translational efforts have been directed at understanding the immune response that causes SSc and the networked interactions with the connective tissue and the vasculature. One of the unexpected findings was that in some

A 33-year-old men presented with systemic sclerosis accompanied by both unusual panniculitis and overlying discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE)-like skin changes on the left buttock. The lesion did not completely match either lupus erythematosus profundus or morphea profunda but featured clinical and pathological findings halfway between the two entities. No case report of co-existence of systemic sclerosis and morphea profunda was found in the literature, but there are three case reports of patients with systemic sclerosis and lupus erythematosus profundus. One of the three cases had DLE-like ch

This is a report of a patient with the CRST syndrome, a mild variant of scleroderma consisting of calcinosismraynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. Typical changes of scleroderma were present in the extremities, esophagus, duodenum and colon. In addition, there was a polypoid filling defect in a colonic diverticulum due to a fecalith. The radiologic appearance at first resembled a colonic neoplasm, although its location within a diverticulum and its speckled appearance suggested the possibility of a fecalith. This was confirmed at colonoscopy, which disclosed numerous wide-mo

Sclerosis is a final substrate and outcome of structural lesions of different organs and tissues in various pathological conditions, such as hypertensive disease, coronaty heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic scleroderma, etc. Not infrequently it as a determinant of severity and unfavourable outcome of the disease. Elucidation of general patterns of the development of sclerosis requires an integrated approach to the systemic analysis of clinical, genetic, biochemical, and morphological characteristics whereas a local

One hundred patients with ischemic finger ulceration had detailed prospective evaluation to determine the incidence of associated diseases, response to treatment, and natural history of the condition. A potentially serious associated disease was detected in each patient including autoimmune disease in 54%, Buerger's disease in 9%, arteriosclerosis obliterans in 9%, hypersensitivity angiitis in 22%, and miscellaneous diseases in 6%. Conservative treatment with soap and water scrubs, antibiotics, and local resection/debridement resulted in long-term healing without recurrence in 88% of patients.
