Home-based HIV testing for men who have sex with men in China: a novel community-based partnership to complement government programs.

BACKGROUND: The coverage of HIV testing among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) remains low after the scale-up of free HIV testing at government-sponsored testing sites. We evaluated the feasibility of home-based HIV self-testing and the willingness to be HIV tested at community-based organizations (CBO). METHODS: We recruited MSM via on-line advertisement, where they completed an on-line informed consent and subsequent questionnaire survey. Eligible MSM received HIV rapid testing kits by mail, performed the test themselves and reported the result remotely. RESULTS: Of the 220 men taki…

Genital human papillomavirus detection in self-samples from transgender men.

IMPORTANCE: Transgender men with a cervix may face barriers to routine cervical cancer screening, including discomfort, dysphoria, and avoidance of pelvic examinations. Self-collected human papillomavirus (HPV) testing may offer a more acceptable screening approach. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the acceptability of self-collected HPV testing and to explore HPV prevalence among transgender men with a cervix. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional proof-of-concept study at Ghent University Hospital, Belgium, between March 2023 and June 2023. Adult transgender men with a

Switching clinic-based cervical cancer screening programs to human papillomavirus self-sampling: A cost-effectiveness analysis of vaccinated and unvaccinated Norwegian women.

Several countries have implemented primary human papillomavirus (HPV) testing for cervical cancer screening. HPV testing enables home-based, self-collected sampling (self-sampling), which provides similar diagnostic accuracy as clinician-collected samples. We evaluated the impact and cost-effectiveness of switching an entire organized screening program to primary HPV self-sampling among cohorts of HPV vaccinated and unvaccinated Norwegian women. We conducted a model-based analysis to project long-term health and economic outcomes for birth cohorts with different HPV vaccine exposure, that is,

Community-Based Screening for Cervical Cancer: A Feasibility Study of Rural Appalachian Women.

OBJECTIVES: To describe women's comfort levels and perceptions about their experience self-collecting cervicovaginal swabs for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, to determine whether nurse-guided patient navigation increases the odds of women receiving a traditional Papanicolaou (Pap) test after HPV screening, and to test the hypothesis that women testing positive for oncogenic HPV would be more likely to have a subsequent Pap test than those testing negative. METHODS: A total of 400 women were recruited from 8 rural Appalachian counties, in 2013 and 2014. After completing a survey, women we

Study of Knowledge, Attitudes, Acceptability and Preference of Home-based HPV Self-Sampling Among a Population of Moroccan Women.

In Morocco, cervical cancer screening rate is still low, which determines the need to adopt new screening approaches. Vaginal self-sampling for HPV testing is one of these strategies. Anticipating changes in screening plans for CC, we would like to present to health authorities a global view about the acceptability and preference of vaginal self-sampling for HPV testing among a population of Moroccan women. The aim of this pilot study is to assess the acceptability and preference of vaginal self-sampling for HPV testing among a population of Moroccan women. A cross-sectional study surveyed 400

Self-sampling as the principal modality for population based cervical screening: Five-year follow-up of the PaVDaG study.

Self-sampling provides a powerful means to engage women in cervical screening. In the original Papillomavirus Dumfries and Galloway study (PaVDaG), we demonstrated cross-sectional similarity of high-risk human papillomavirus (Hr-HPV) testing on self-taken vaginal vs clinician-taken samples for the detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 or worse (CIN2+). Few data exist on the longitudinal performance of self-sampling; we present longitudinal outcomes of PaVDaG. Routinely screened women provided a self-taken and a clinician-collected sample. Ninety-one percent of 5136 women from the o

For Human Papillomavirus Self-Sampling, Stated Willingness Does Not Correspond With Subsequent Uptake by Rural Malawian Women.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus (HPV), the causative agent for cervical cancer, can be tested for using self-collected vaginal samples. Self-collection is promising for HPV screening in hard-to-reach populations. To assess the relationship between willingness to self-collect and subsequent uptake of self-collection, we conducted a longitudinal study of reproductive-age women in rural Malawi. METHODS: At baseline, we asked women if they would be willing to self-collect a vaginal sample for HPV testing. At follow-up (12-18 months later), we offered the same women the opportunity to self-colle

Impact of reduced chlamydia testing on STI testing and provider preferences in the Netherlands: an experimental vignette study.

OBJECTIVES: The restrictive chlamydia testing guidelines for asymptomatic individuals at Dutch sexual health centres (SHCs) since January 2025 may influence perceptions and attitudes towards testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study aimed to assess the potential impact of this guideline change on STI testing preferences among young people and to examine determinants and underlying motivations of these preferences. METHODS: Heterosexuals aged 16-34 in the Netherlands, recruited via social media and SHCs, completed an online survey (April-June 2024). STI testing preferences

Assessing Acceptability of Self-Sampling Kits, Prevalence, and Risk Factors for Human Papillomavirus Infection in American Indian Women.

We evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing and calculated the prevalence of and risk factors for high-risk (hr) HPV infections in a community-based sample of American Indian women. To this end, we recruited 329 Hopi women aged 21-65 years to self-collect vaginal samples for hrHPV testing. Samples were tested by polymerase chain reaction for 14 hrHPV genotypes. We used Chi square tests to identify correlates of preference for clinician Pap testing versus HPV self-sampling, and age-adjusted Poisson regression to evaluate correlates of h

Estimating chlamydia screening coverage: a comparison of self-report and health care effectiveness data and information set measures.

BACKGROUND: Population-based surveys (self-report) and health insurance administrative data (Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set [HEDIS]) are used to estimate chlamydia screening coverage in the United States. Estimates from these methods differ, but few studies have compared these 2 indices in the same population. METHODS: In 2010, we surveyed a random sample of women aged 18 to 25 years enrolled in a Washington State-managed care organization. Respondents were asked if they were sexually active in last year and if they tested for chlamydia in that time. We linked survey respon

Adolescents in The Netherlands underestimate risk for sexually transmitted infections and deny the need for sexually transmitted infection testing.

Worldwide, adolescents are at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STI). In The Netherlands, test rates among young heterosexual people are low and knowledge on the behavioral determinants of testing is scarce. In this study, we investigated STI testing in more detail with two independent samples of 16-25 year old vocational school students (n = 756/n = 1302). The aim of this study was to examine risk perceptions in relation to STI testing among lower educated adolescents in order to inform the development of an intervention promoting STI testing. We compared multiple measures of risk per

Using self-monitoring to detect and manage raised blood pressure and pre-eclampsia during pregnancy: the BUMP research programme and its impact.

Raised blood pressure affects around ten percent of pregnancies worldwide, causing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Self-monitoring of blood pressure during higher-risk or hypertensive pregnancy has been shown to be feasible, acceptable, safe, and no more expensive than usual care alone. Additionally, self-testing for proteinuria has been shown to be just as accurate as healthcare professional testing, creating the potential for monitoring of multiple indicators through pregnancy. The work suggests however, that an organisational shift is needed to properly use and see benefits …

Effect of vaginal self-sampling on cervical cancer screening rates: a community-based study in Newfoundland.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is highly preventable and treatable if detected early through regular screening. Women in the Canadian province of Newfoundland & Labrador have relatively low rates of cervical cancer screening, with rates of around 40 % between 2007 and 2009. Persistent infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) is a necessary cause for the development of cervical cancer, and HPV testing, including self-sampling, has been suggested as an alternative method of cervical cancer screening that may alleviate some barriers to screening. Our objective was to determine whether off

Uptake of Cervical Cancer Screening in Ethiopia by Self-Sampling HPV DNA Compared to Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid: A Cluster Randomized Trial.

In Ethiopia, the standard method of cervical cancer screening is using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA). Self-collection-based human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is assumed to improve the uptake of screening, especially for hard to reach populations. We investigated whether HPV DNA testing with the self-collection of cervical samples would be associated with increased uptake and adherence to procedures at the population level compared with VIA within defined rural population in Ethiopia. A total of 22 clusters (comprising 2,356 women ages 30-49 years) were randomized in two arms. Follo

Diagnostic Infectious Diseases Testing Outside Clinics: A Global Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most people around the world do not have access to facility-based diagnostic testing, and the gap in availability of diagnostic tests is a major public health challenge. Self-testing, self-sampling, and institutional testing outside conventional clinical settings are transforming infectious disease diagnostic testing in a wide range of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We examined the delivery models of infectious disease diagnostic testing outside clinics to assess the impact on test uptake and linkage to care. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, …
