This paper describes the clinical findings and treatment of 67 sheep and goats with listeriosis. In 55 of them the diagnosis was made on the basis of the typical signs, which included vestibular ataxia, circling, head tilt and unilateral cranial nerve deficits, but in 12 animals a definitive diagnosis was made only after postmortem examination. An insecticide-free sheep blowfly trapping system, utilising a synthetic lure, was evaluated at 4 localities in the Western Cape. Control sites, where no suppression was practised, were identified for each locality. The blowfly population was monitored for 48 hours monthly at each of the localities. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is any need for woolgrowers to add diazinon to cyromazine jetting fluid to control active flystrike on sheep.
METHOD: Larval implants were placed on 143 sheep and allowed to develop for 2 days. Groups of 47 or 48 of these struck sheep were jetted with cyromazine at 1000 mg/L, diazinon at 400 mg/L, or a mixture of the two. Clinical and laboratory examinations were carried out in a prospective study from 1978 to 1998 on 454 spontaneously diseased sheep of different breeds aged 2-8 years. Three groups of sheep were defined by plasma concentrations of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3-OHB) and calcium. 214 ewes suffered from ketosis (pregnancy toxaemia, 3-OHB > 1.6 mmol/l), 195 ewes and 5 rams suffered from hypocalcaemia (Ca < 2.0 mmol/l), and 40 ewes were sick with booth diseases simultaneously.
