SLAP lesions: a treatment algorithm.

Tears of the superior labrum involving the biceps anchor are a common entity, especially in athletes, and may highly impair shoulder function. If conservative treatment fails, successful arthroscopic repair of symptomatic SLAP lesions has been described in the literature particularly for young athletes. However, the results in throwing athletes are less successful with a significant amount of patients who will not regain their pre-injury level of performance. The clinical results of SLAP repairs in middle-aged and older patients are mixed, with worse results and higher revision rates as compar

Predictors of shoulder pain in manual wheelchair users.

BACKGROUND: Manual wheelchair users rely on their upper limbs to provide independent mobility, which leads to high muscular demand on their upper extremities and often results in shoulder pain and injury. However, the specific causes of shoulder pain are unknown. Previous work has shown that decreased shoulder muscle strength is predictive of shoulder pain onset, and others have analyzed joint kinematics and kinetics, propulsion technique and intra-individual variability for their relation to shoulder pathology. The purpose of this study was to determine in a longitudinal setting whether there

Characterization of Human Shoulder Joint Stiffness Across 3D Arm Postures and Its Sex Differences.

Understanding the characteristics of shoulder joint stiffness can offer insights into how the shoulder joint contributes to arm stability and assists in various arm postures and movements. This study aims to characterize posture-dependent shoulder stiffness in a three-dimensional (3D) space and investigate its potential sex differences. A multi-degree-of-freedom, parallel-actuated shoulder exoskeleton robot was used' to perturb the participant's shoulder joint and measure the resulting torque responses while participants relaxed their shoulder muscles. The group average results of 40 healthy i

Hemiplegic shoulder pain.

This article reviews the literature relevant to the possible causes, prevention, and treatment of hemiplegic shoulder pain. Shoulder pain and stiffness impede the rehabilitation of patients with hemiplegia. The cause of this complication is unknown, but it may be related to the severity of neurological deficits, preexisting or posthemiplegic soft tissue injury, subluxation, brachial plexus injury, or shoulder-hand syndrome. Shoulder pain may be preventable if risk factors can be identified and appropriate prophylaxis applied. Resolution of the condition depends on diagnosis and effective treat

True congenital dislocation of shoulder: A case report and review of the literature.

The dislocation of a shoulder joint in infancy is extremely rare and is usually the result of traumatic birth injuries, a sequel to brachial plexus injury, or a true congenital dislocation of shoulder. With more advanced obstetric care, the incidence of first two types has drastically decreased. We report a case of true congenital dislocation of shoulder, second of its kind, in a child who was delivered by cesarean section thereby negating any influence of trauma. We report the case because of its rarity, and review the available literature on this topic. We also discuss the management options

The role of computerized tomography in shoulder arthrography.

Double contrast computerized tomographic (CT) shoulder arthrograms of 55 shoulders were reviewed. This investigation was compared with conventional arthrograms and the findings were correlated with subsequent clinical and surgical follow-up. CT arthrograms were found to be useful in demonstrating bony, ligamentous and cartilaginous structures and have helped the surgeon in deciding the approach and type of surgical procedure. Indications for CT arthrography are recurrent dislocation, multidirectional instability, severe rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritides, complex shoulder deformities a

Quality of Life in Patients following distal nerve transfers for the Restoration of Shoulder abduction and external rotation - Single centre experience.

INTRODUCTION: Restoration of shoulder function is a key objective in brachial plexus surgery, as impaired abduction and external rotation substantially limit upper limb use and quality of life. Distal nerve transfers offer shorter regeneration distances and more predictable outcomes than nerve grafting. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study evaluated the effectiveness of distal nerve transfers in restoring shoulder function, reducing pain, and improving quality of life in patients with peripheral nerve injuries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective cohort of 36 patients with traumatic brachial plexus

Fractures of the Coracoid Process: Evaluation, Management, and Outcomes.

Fractures of the coracoid process are relatively rare, and current management guidelines remain unclear. Most coracoid fractures occur in conjunction with other shoulder injuries, including dislocations and fractures. Identifying coracoid fractures can be difficult because most fractures are nondisplaced and can be missed on radiographs or may be masked by other injuries. Management is largely guided by fracture location and displacement. Conservative treatment is preferred for fractures that are minimally displaced, whereas indications for surgical fixation include fractures that are displace…
