A preliminary survey of a remote mining and smelting region of the Russian Far East (RFE) indicates significant soil lead contamination and a high probability of childhood lead poisoning. Lead concentrations in residential gardens (476-4310 mg/kg, Gmean=1626 mg/kg) and in roadside soils (2020-22900 mg/kg, Gmean=4420 mg/kg) exceed USEPA guidance for remediation. Preliminary biokinetic estimates of mean blood levels suggest that preschool children are at significant risk of lead poisoning from soil/dust ingestion with levels predicted to average 13-27 microg/dl. Malignant melanoma morbidity in Khabarovsk Territory in 1973-1983 was studied. The data on 214 primary patients were analysed. In 1981-1983 morbidity level showed an 1.7-1.8-fold increase as compared with 1973-1975. Skin melanoma ranked first; it was followed by that of the eye. Skin melanoma predominated in patients with the light-color skin. Melanoma was not registered in the aborigines living in the north of the Territory.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) cases occur everywhere in the Republic of Altai. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is transmitted to humans by at least three genera of ticks: Ixodes, Dermacentor, and Haemaphysalis. The risk of the infection is higher in the northern part of the republic. Most patients with HGA show serologic evidence of coinfection with North Asian tick typhus and other tick-borne diseases. The high probability of HGA concurrent with other tick-borne infections requires an integrated approach to preventing these diseases in the Republic of Altai.

The authors analyzed whether there is an association of mortality with ambient air pollution analyzed in Yekaterinburg and Nizhni Tagil in 1994 to 1997. There was a positive correlation between general mortality and CO or SO2 concentrations, between cardiovascular mortality and dust, NH3 or phenol, between mortality and CO or NH3. An increase of deaths as percents per 10 micrograms/m3 dust was calculated.

To evaluate the efficacy of the European TBE vaccine in east-Siberian and far-eastern regions of Russia, we examined the immune responses of the vaccine against recent TBE virus Siberian (Irkutsk) and far-eastern (Khabarovsk and Vladivostok) isolates. The sera of vaccinated humans showed efficient neutralizing antibody titers (> or =20) against Siberian and far-eastern strains. A course of silicic sapropel applications compared to calcareous sapropel induced a reversible fall of total lipid concentration in blood serum of intact rats. Sapropels of different kinds and of the same kind but obtained from different depths of the same deposit varied by their ability to correct hepatic function in rats with toxic hepatitis. The highest benefit was registered in application of carbonate sapropels taken from the depth of 1.5-2.5 m.
