A survey on systemic antibiotic prescription among dentists in Romandy.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global health threat that arises from the excessive and incorrect use of antibiotics. As key players in the evolution of AMR, medical and dental practitioners are often questioned on their indications for antibiotic prescription during daily practice. The present survey aimed to evaluate self-reported practices regarding systemic antibiotic prescription among Swiss dentists in Romandy. An electronic questionnaire was sent to 331 dentists working in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and the responses were analyzed on a three-point Likert sca

Morbidity of anterior iliac crest and calvarial bone donor graft sites: a 1-year randomized controlled trial.

Autogenous bone graft harvesting is still commonly considered the gold standard for the reconstruction of a severely resorbed maxillary alveolar ridge; however, the preferred donor site remains a subject of debate. This study compared the morbidity of calvarial and iliac crest donor sites after harvesting. Twenty edentulous patients with an insufficient volume of maxillary bone for reliable implant placement were assigned randomly to either calvarial (n=10) or anterior iliac crest (n=10) bone harvesting groups. All patients underwent a maxillary sinus floor elevation procedure combined with wi

A Case of Simultaneous Sinus Augmentation and Oroantral Fistula Closure for Implant Preparation.

An oroantral communication may form in the upper molar region after tooth extraction. The patient is a 59-year-old female, who is a nonsmoker. At the initial visit, teeth #14, #15, and #17 were missing. After tooth #16 was extracted due to apical periodontitis, a bone defect with a diameter of approximately 4 mm was observed, leading to the formation of an oroantral fistula (OAF). Another window was created in the lateral wall adjacent to the superior part of the bone defect at the fistula site to achieve closure of the OAF through bone formation and simultaneously perform sinus floor elevatio

Evaluation of immediate implant placement with osteotome sinus floor elevation without graft material.

BACKGROUND: Significant difficulties can be encountered when installing posterior maxillary implants. Osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) enables insertion of implants with insufficient bone height at the posterior maxilla using a special instrument known as the "osteotom." AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the implant survival rates and radiographical bone gain data after OSFE with simultaneous implant placement performed without grafting material. Further, we have discussed whether the osteotom tapping distance to sinus floor affects the amount of new bone gain (NBG). MATERIALS AND METH

A cone-beam computed tomographic assessment of the proximity of the maxillary canine and posterior teeth to the maxillary sinus floor: Lessons from 4778 roots.

INTRODUCTION: When tooth roots protrude into the maxillary sinus, apical root resorption and tipping may occur during horizontal tooth movement across the sinus floor. Three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images may provide detailed information without distortion and overlap. We evaluated the relationships between the maxillary tooth root apices and the maxillary sinus floor using CBCT. METHODS: We evaluated 4778 roots from 76 men (aged 27.6 ± 10.4 [mean ± standard deviation] years; range, 18-69 years), and 225 women (aged 30.4 ± 12.0 years; range, 18-68 years). The position
