A previously healthy 50-year-old man was transferred to our hospital for evaluation of acute inflammation in his right eye after ocular trauma while using a grass mower. Slit lamp examination showed 1 mm-length full thickness corneal laceration without leakage, 4+ cells and inflammatory membrane in the anterior chamber, 10% hypopyon, posterior synechiae formation, and cataract change. Upon orbital computerized tomography, a metallic intraocular foreign body in the lens was identified. Vitrectomy, phacoemulsification, foreign body removal, anterior chamber irrigation, and intravitreal antibioti…

The mechanism of subretinal fluid accumulation in optic disc pit maculopathy is unknown. A 67-year-old Japanese woman complaining of blurred vision in her right eye presented with a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/200. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy and optical coherence tomography examination showed maculopathy typically associated with optic disc pits, except that the patient had no optic disc pit. Long-acting gas tamponade was required to achieve reattachment of the retina and retinoschisis after initial failure of surgery using surgically induced vitreous detachment without either fluid-air ex

We undertook a prospective slit lamp examination of 56 eyes which had undergone routine phacoemulsification, in order to determine the incidence of metallic intraocular foreign bodies. Characteristic small reflective particles were noted in 86%, with a mean of 5.1 particles per affected eye. No accompanying clinical problems were seen. The used phacoemulsification needles were examined with colour photography and scanning electron microscopy. A characteristic pattern of wear was observed, corresponding to an area under the plastic irrigating sleeve rather than at the tip. This suggests cavitat…

A prospective study was undertaken to assess whether the level of intraocular pressure (IOP) on the first day after cataract surgery could be estimated by clinical examination only, thereby removing the need for applanation tonometry. A total of 70 patients underwent uncomplicated extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. The following day a Consultant, Registrar and Senior House Officer were asked to identify those patients with significantly raised IOP (> 27 mmHg) using slit lamp examination only. A fourth examiner, masked to the assessments of the three observers,…

Through systematic optimization of lead D25, we identified two novel ROCK inhibitors, RX-021 and RX-044. Maintaining DFG interactions while optimizing linker flexibility was critical for potency. RX-044 showed excellent ROCK1/2 inhibition (IC50 = 10.01 and 9.68 nM), favorable kinase selectivity, and no cytotoxicity in HTM cells. In a mouse ocular hypertension model, RX-021 achieved superior IOP reduction (5.38 ± 1.51 mmHg at 4 h) versus (S)-Netarsudil, with sustained 24 h efficacy and reversible HTM cell effects. Both compounds provided significant retinal neuroprotection, preserving retinal g

Visual rehabilitation of pediatric corneal blinds is a major challenge to corneal transplant surgeons. Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) is the only way to restore vision and prevent irreversible blindness due to amblyopia in children. Performing penetrating corneal grafts in children poses difficulty in evaluation, technical difficulties during surgery and problems during follow-up. Younger children do not cooperate for proper slit-lamp examination and need to be examined under general anaesthesia. In addition, the complications encountered post PKP, including allograft rejection, post PKP astig
