Ectopic hamartomatous thymoma (EHT) is a rare benign tumor. We present a case of EHT, which was seen as subcutaneous mass on the left supraclavicular area in a 19-year-old man. The tumor consisted of spindle cells, epithelial cells, adipose cells, and a small amount of lymphocytes, as described previously. Immunohistochemically, spindle cells were positive for keratin, a-smooth muscle actin, CD34 and vimentin, but negative for desmin and S-100 protein. Lymphocytes were positive for CD45RO but negative for CD20, CD1a, and CD99. Approximately, 5% of cells were positive for MIB-1 and no cells sta

A clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical review was made of seven cases of angiomyofibroblastoma. The patients were middle-aged women who had a slowly growing mass, measuring 1.5-6 cm in maximum dimension, located subcutaneously in the vulva. The tumors were well-demarcated and characterized by well-vascularized, alternating hypercellular and hypocellular edematous areas composed of bland, plump spindle- or oval-shaped stromal cells frequently aggregated around small blood vessels. An epithelioid appearance of the stromal cells was seen in two cases. Immunohistochemically, the stromal cells

Renal angiomyolipomas, common benign tumors, can exhibit slow growth in sporadic cases or have aggressive tendencies when linked to genetic conditions like tuberous sclerosis. This case report focuses on the exceptionally rare angiomyolipoma with epithelial cysts (AMLEC) variant, particularly challenging to diagnose due to its scarcity. Describing a 41-year-old woman's case, initially suspected to be renal cell carcinoma during an infertility evaluation, subsequent partial nephrectomy revealed a tumor comprising smooth muscle, blood vessels, and fat, with cystic regions featuring cuboidal lini

A 47-year-old woman was referred to our department with opportunistic endoscopic findings of two submucosal esophageal bulges, approximately half the circumference of the esophagus, both nearly 2.0 cm in size, and 24-27 cm from the incisors. Ultrasound endoscopy diagnosed smooth muscle tumors originating from the muscularis propria layer and she next underwent submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection. Intraoperatively, part of the tumor could not be separated from the muscularis propria layer and a U-shaped tumor was finally resected. A fully covered self-expanding esophageal nitinol stent wa…

A man in his thirties was admitted to the hospital because of upper abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed intussusception in the ascending and transverse colon. After spontaneous discontinuation, endoscopy revealed a 25-mm 0-I tumor in the ileum. An emergency operation was performed the next day due to intussusception recurrence. The tumor was hyperplastic intestinal epithelium with dendritic smooth muscle fascicles and partly cancerous. The patient had no clinical features of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Therefore, the patient was diagnosed with Peutz-Jeghers type polyps based on pathological

Leiomyoma is an extremely rare tumor in sinonasal area. The reason for this is due to minimal amount of the smooth muscle in the area. The origin of this tumor is not clear and its etiology has not been proven in the literature. A 58-year-old woman who experienced nasal obstruction and epiphora visited our clinic. A huge mass was noted in right nasal cavity originating from the lacrimal bone area. The authors conducted endoscopic sinus surgery and obtained the specimen. Immunochemistry showed leiomyoma in the nasal cavity, which expressed estrogen receptor. There was no progesterone receptor e

The authors describe a case of multifocal perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) arising in the pelvis of a 39-year-old woman affected by tuberous sclerosis. The tumor presented in the form of multiple fascicular, focally cystic nodules involving the uterine corpus, both ovaries, and the omentum. Microscopically, the nodules were composed of foci of adenomyosis and endometriosis (with focal atypical complex hyperplasia) associated with a stromal spindle cell population immunoreactive for HMB-45, smooth muscle actin, and estrogen and progesterone receptors. We interpret these foci as the

We report a case of hemangiopericytoma arising from the tongue of a 12-year-old child. Ultrastructurally, tumor cells revealed discontinuous basal lamina, intermediate-type intercellular junctions, subplasmalemmal thickenings, and smooth muscle-type cytoplasmic filaments. In addition, occasional oligocilia and test tube-like inclusions were observed. Karyotypic analysis of the tumor cells revealed two balanced translocations that have not been reported previously in pediatric solid tumors: one involved chromosomes 1 and 3, t(1;3)(p22;q21), and the other involved chromosomes 7 and 12, t(7;12)(p

A series of new flavanone derivatives of farrerol was synthesized by a convenient method. The in vitro anti-tumor activity of these compounds was evaluated against human Bel-7402, HL-60, BGC-823 and KB cell lines, the protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) inhibitor activity was also tested. Their cytoprotective activity was tested using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced injury in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Their in vitro anti-atherosclerosis activity was tested on vascular smooth muscle cells by the MTT method using tetrandrine as a positive contrast drug. The structures of all compounds s

An aged female Crl:CD (SD) rat developed a subcutaneous tumor in the left occipital region. Histologically, the tumor was predominantly composed of spindle-shaped cells proliferating in a loosely cohesive fascicular arrangement in a basophilic myxoid matrix with a minor population of epithelioid cells. Metastases were detected in the cervical lymph nodes, kidneys, lungs, and the pleural cavity. Duct-like structures, considered to be entrapped normal salivary ducts, were scattered within the tumor. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were diffusely positive for vimentin, focally positive for

TRAF7 mutations have been reported in many tumor types, including subsets of meningiomas, mesothelioma, intraneural perineuriomas, and rare cases of aggressive fibromyxoid spindle cell tumors in adults. We expand the spectrum of TRAF7-mutated tumors by reporting a case of a TRAF7-mutated myxoid and spindle cell mesenchymal tumor in a 13-year-old female with a history of a heart and renal transplant. Histopathologic examination demonstrated hypocellular areas composed of bland spindle cells in a myxoid matrix and hypercellular areas with significant pleomorphism and up to 13 mitotic figures per

BACKGROUND: Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma (Sternberg tumor) is a rare variant of the uterine smooth muscle tumor. Although this tumor is a benign tumor clinically and pathologically, the appearance and growth pattern is unusual, so it may be misdiagnosed as malignancy.
CASE REPORTS: We report two cases of cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma of the uterus that occurred in two 44- and 31-year-old women, respectively. Total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed in one of the patients, and myomectomy was done in the other one. Macroscopically, both tumors were grape-li…

The perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) family of tumors includes angiomyolipoma, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, clear cell sugar tumor of the lung, clear cell myomelanocytic tumor of the falciform ligament/ligamentum teres, and rare clear cell tumors of other anatomical sites (PEComas-NOS). Among the PEComas-NOS, pigmented variants are extremely rare. The case concerns a 50-year-old female who presented with pain in right hypochondrium. The resected specimen included a 24 × 18 × 9 cm mass. The tumor was histologically characterized by both spindle and epithelioid cells with round to oval

A case of a very rare adipocytic tumor found during corrective surgery for incisional abdominal hernia is presented. Because of uterine leiomyomas the patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy 14 years before. During surgery of incisional hernia, a part of small intestine along with a pedunculated tumor was found in hernial sac. The tumor was attached to the medial intra-abdominal peritoneum. On examination, the tumor presented as a totally encapsulated dimorphic benign neoplasm composed of mature adipocytes and well-differentiated smooth muscle cells. Lipoblasts, floret-like giant cells,

We report a case of solitary genital leiomyoma arising from the tunica dartos of the scrotum. A 43-year-old man complained of a slightly tender left scrotal mass that had enlarged over approximately 17 years. On physical examination, the tumor was pedunculate and attached to the lower pole of the left scrotum. The tumor was clearly separate from scrotal contents such as the testis, epididymis, and spermatic cord. Ultrasonography showed the tumor to be 20.0 X 23.5 mm in diameter. Other laboratory examination findings were normal. Under local anesthesia, the tumor was resected at its base with o

Abstract We report on a fetus with a congenital pulmonary myofibroblastic tumor, the prenatal detection of which with imaging modalities has not been reported up until now. A 32-year-old woman was referred to our hospital at 29 weeks' gestation because of severe fetal hydrops. Sonograms and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large solid tumor in the left thorax. The fetus died in utero the next day. Autopsy confirmed that the tumor was confined to the lower lobe of the left lung, and circulatory insufficiency from compression by the tumor was considered to be the cause of fetal hydrops and de

Gastroesophageal-vulvar leiomyomatosis represents a rare syndrome of diffuse smooth muscle proliferation primarily in the gastroesophagus and vulva. To our knowledge, there are 19 cases reported in the literature, most associated with Alport's syndrome. We recently encountered a case not associated with Alport's syndrome, which had progressed over the course of 20 years. We used immunohistochemistry to further delineate the process. Leiomyomatosis appears to be a systemic disorder, with indolent proliferations of smooth muscle in areas that may not be clinically significant.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a diverse group of lesions first described in lung and later on reported in various sites like stomach, bowel, spleen, bone. We report a case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in a 30-year-old male who presented with a slowly progressive scalp swelling of two-year duration. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an intradiploic well enhancing lesion in parietal and occipital bone, isointense on T1 weighted images and hypo intense on T2 weighted images with dural enhancement. On histopathological examination, the lesion was composed of variable admixture of

Unilateral paramedian involvement of the midbrain tegmentum causes monocular paralysis of adduction in the ipsilateral eye, paresis of contralateral saccades in the opposite eye, and conjugate paresis of ipsilateral smooth pursuit. The adduction paralysis can be nuclear, or internuclear from a lesion in the medial longitudinal fasciculus. This distinctive midbrain syndrome of horizontal gaze paresis is exemplified by means of quantitative infrared oculographic, radiological, and neuropathological correlation in two patients with predominantly paramedian midbrain tumors involving the mesencepha
