A Psychological Guide to Lower Face Botulinum Toxin Injections: Baseline Emotional Functions of Facial Expressions.

BACKGROUND: The lower face conveys critical interpersonal signals and is central to how patients are emotionally evaluated by others. As botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is increasingly used in the perioral and mandibular region, there is a growing need to understand how such procedures may influence both aesthetic outcomes and the dynamics of emotional communication and social perception. AIMS: This narrative review outlines the baseline emotional functions of lower-face expressions and supports clinicians in integrating emotional and interpersonal considerations into BoNT-A treatment plannin

Community-Based Screening for Unmet Social Needs and Kidney Disease Risk Factors: Findings from the DECK Pilot Observational Study.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) significantly influence the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in underserved populations. The Designing Equitable Care for Kidneys (DECK) study examined the relationship between CKD risk and unmet SDOH in Richmond, Virginia's East End, a historically redlined area with high social vulnerability. Among 61 participants, CKD awareness was moderate (mean score = 71%), and 36% recognized the disease as preventable. Substantial unmet social needs were reported in financial and social domains. Stratified analysis revealed nuanced associations betw

Exploring Social Service Providers' Perspectives on Barriers to Social Services for Early Adjustment of Immigrant Adolescents in South Korea.

Recently arrived immigrant adolescents experience difficulties in adjusting to school in South Korea. However, the existing social services do not meet their psychosocial needs. This study investigates the perspectives of social service providers about challenges in providing services for immigrant adolescents early in their adjustments. We conducted qualitative, in-depth interviews with 27 South Korean social service providers. We identified barriers to social services, categorized into three themes: (1) Initial Contact Phase; (2) Service Delivery Phase; and (3) Structural Challenges. We sugg

Authenticated social capital: conceptualising power, resistance and well-being in the lives of transgender older adults.

Trans people experience social marginalisation, stigmatisation and violent oppression in US society and worldwide. Given the importance of social capital for wellbeing, this study sought to illuminate the ways in which trans people build social capital throughout their lives and to use this knowledge to promote new and helpful ways of thinking about social capital concerning the human life course in the 21st century. We conducted a secondary interpretive content analysis of 86 in-depth interviews with trans older adults generated as part of the arts project To Survive on This Shore. Trans olde

Social science research in malaria prevention, management and control in the last two decades: an overview.

In the recent past, considerable progress has been made in understanding how human behavior and social organization, macro- and micro-level economic processes, and health and political systems affect responses to malaria at global, national, community, household, and individual levels. Advances in malaria-related social, behavioral, economic, evaluation, health systems, and policy (social science) research have resulted in improvements in the design and implementation of malaria prevention, management and control (PMC) strategies. Indeed, the past two decades chronicle dramatic advances in the

The impact of social determinants of health on early childhood development: a qualitative context analysis in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants have a significant impact on children's development and their abilities and capacities, especially in early childhood. They can bring about inequity in living conditions of children and, as a result, lead to differences in various dimensions of development including the social, psychological, cognitive and emotional aspects. We aimed to identify and analyze the social determinants of Early Childhood Development (ECD) in Iran and provide policy implications to improve this social context. METHODS: In a qualitative study, data were collected through semi-structur

Transforming social perspectives with cognitive maps.

Growing evidence suggests that cognitive maps represent relations between social knowledge similar to how spatial locations are represented in an environment. Notably, the extant human medial temporal lobe literature assumes associations between social stimuli follow a linear associative mapping from an egocentric viewpoint to a cognitive map. Yet, this form of associative social memory does not account for a core phenomenon of social interactions in which social knowledge learned via comparisons to the self, other individuals or social networks are assimilated within a single frame of referen

Modeling how autistic and non-autistic groups learn about their own and each other's preferences.

Recent theories propose that altered social understanding in autism stems from mismatches in social representations and inferential processes between non-autistic and autistic groups. Using a cross-sectional design, we examined whether these groups apply different types of social knowledge and learning strategies when inferring preferences of individuals from their own versus another diagnostic group. When comparing food and activity self-preferences in large samples, autistic adolescents' preferences showed greater group-level variability compared to non-autistic adults and adolescents. A sam

The role of parenting styles and adolescent conscientiousness in social cognition: A path analysis mediated by parent-adolescent interaction.

Social cognition-inferring mental states from eye cues-is vital for adolescent adjustment, yet integrative models of its parenting and personality predictors are scarce, particularly in non-Western collectivistic contexts. This study tested a mediation model linking authoritative and permissive parenting styles and adolescent conscientiousness to social cognition via parent-adolescent interaction. In a cross-sectional design, 300 Iranian adolescent-parent dyads completed measures of parenting styles, conscientiousness, parent-adolescent communication, and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test-

Climate change and dementia: the impacts of social inequalities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate change has emerged as a critical global health challenge, which poses significant risks to brain health and well being among older adults. This review summarized the evidence from the past 2 years on how climate change shapes cognitive health and further explored how social inequities amplify the climate-related exposures and the burden of dementia and its consequence. RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging evidence have linked climate-related exposures to the dementia continuum, from accelerating cognitive decline to increase acute hospitalization and mortality, through direct

Recommendations to Advance Social Connectedness in End Stage Kidney Disease Care in a Post-COVID-19 Era.

Social connectedness, defined as a sense of belonging and inclusion among individuals and groups, is crucial for the well-being of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients. This Perspective employs a hypothetical case study to highlight the risks of social isolation and loneliness faced by ESKD patients. It offers guidance on how the ESKD community can effectively address these challenges. Although in-center hemodialysis provides an inherent environment for fostering social connections, the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the risk of social disconnection. We delineate 5 key recommendations t

Social care for older people - a blind spot in the Norwegian care system.

A growing number of older people in Norway receive care services at home. Public policy aims at promoting social safety, preventing social problems and providing recipients of care with the means to live an active and meaningful everyday life together with others. However, health-related services have long been prioritized at the expense of other care services. Our aims are to investigate how professional caregivers in Norwegian home care for older people relate their professional mandate to social care to assess what different professional positions regarding social care imply for realizing t

Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: Speech-Language Pathologists Must Have a Seat at the Table.

PURPOSE: This viewpoint aimed to highlight gaps in the integration of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) within pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) care pathways and to suggest strategies to strengthen SLP involvement across health care and educational settings. For example, we understand that young children who experience concussion or mild TBI may not be seen for assessment or treatment. Although cognitive-communication disorders are common after pediatric TBI and fall within the scope of speech-language pathology practice, referral and involvement remain inconsistent. This viewpoint syn

Where is the lifestyle medicine in the Canadian undergraduate medical education curricula? A content analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle Medicine (LM) focuses on preventing and managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through evidence-based behavioural and therapeutic interventions. Despite the established efficacy of LM, its integration into Canadian undergraduate medical education (UGME) remains largely unexamined. METHODS: We employed a deductive and inductive summative content analysis methodology. We collected publicly available course and program descriptions for each UGME program across Canada. Further, we contacted deans/curriculum leads for additional curriculum documentation. Documents were cod

Influence of interpersonal distance on collaborative performance in the joint Simon task-An fNIRS-based hyperscanning study.

Collaboration is a critical skill in everyday life. It has been suggested that collaborative performance may be influenced by social factors such as interpersonal distance, which is defined as the perceived psychological distance between individuals. Previous literature has reported that close interpersonal distance may promote the level of self-other integration between interacting members, and in turn, enhance collaborative performance. These studies mainly focused on interdependent collaboration, which requires high levels of shared representations and self-other integration. However, littl

The role and functions of community-based multidisciplinary teams in two integrated care and support Pioneers: Perspectives from local system leaders.

ObjectivesCentral government has been promoting closer integration between the National Health Service (NHS) and local government social services in England for more than five decades. Improved coordination between primary, hospital, community health and social services has been advocated as a cost-effective response to growing care needs in an ageing population. This paper concentrates on one of the principal local care coordination mechanisms: community-based multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) involving NHS and social services staff. It reports local leaders' perceptions of MDTs' current and fut

Challenges and opportunities in embedding core components of substance use health care into Housing First programs.

BACKGROUND: The intersecting crises of homelessness and substance use health (SUH) harms require a critical re-evaluation of mental health, SUH, and social care integration. Housing First (HF) is an evidence-based approach to ending chronic homelessness, but challenges in effectively supporting individuals with significant SUH needs within the intervention have not been well-documented. A national pan-Canadian workshop convened multidisciplinary partners to identify barriers, opportunities, and core components for the successful integration of SUH care within HF programs. METHODS: The worksho
