Social Vulnerabilities and Reported Discrimination in Health Care Among HIV-Positive Medical Case Management Clients in New York City.

We aimed to investigate the extent to which social vulnerabilities correlated with lifetime experience of discrimination in healthcare among people with HIV (PWH) receiving services to improve treatment adherence and viral suppression. Individuals (N=687) enrolled in a Ryan White Part A medical case management program were surveyed about discrimination experienced in healthcare settings, reasons for any discrimination faced, and self-reported health. We merged data from the survey with data from the New York City HIV Surveillance Registry and a programmatic database to obtain client sociodemog

Associations of social frailty with loss of muscle mass and muscle weakness among community-dwelling older adults.

AIM: The present cross-sectional study examined the associations of social frailty status with loss of muscle mass and weakness among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Data from 353 older adults (74.8% women) who had participated in a community-based health check survey (Tarumizu Study) were analyzed. Social frailty was defined using responses to five questions (going out less frequently, rarely visiting friends, feeling unhelpful to friends or family, living alone and not talking with someone every day). Participants with two or more components were considered socially frail. We asse

Coloring the white plague: a syndemic approach to immigrant tuberculosis in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: In this article, we adopt a syndemic approach to immigrant tuberculosis (TB) in Canada as a way of challenging contemporary epide … of twentieth century. RESULTS: We expose the ideological assumptions about race, immigration, and social status which underpin current policies designed to control TB within the immigrant population. We argue that TB control policies which divert the attention from structural health determinants perpetuate health and social inequities of racialized population …

Social environments and lifestyles linked to mortality and future health risks in metabolic syndrome: evidence from UK and US nationwide cohort studies.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) poses a major public health challenge. This study examined how social environments and their interactions with lifestyle behaviours influence mortality, life expectancy and disease risks in adults with MetS from the UK and USA. METHODS: Adults with MetS were identified from the UK Biobank (2006-2010, n=60 423; mean follow-up 12.8 years) and US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (1999-2018, n=11 170; mean follow-up 8.0 years). Weighted scores for social environment (socioeconomic status, social capital, healthcare access, built env

Life Course Socioeconomic Disadvantage and the Aging Immune System: Findings From the Health and Retirement Study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has documented a consistent association between current socioeconomic status (SES) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Early life is likely a critical period for CMV exposure and immune development, but less is known about early-life socioeconomic factors and CMV, particularly in older age populations. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we investigated the association between life course socioeconomic disadvantage and immune response to CMV among older adults. METHODS: Using ordered logit models, we estimated associations between several measures of socioeco

The Relationship Between Structural Racism and Black-White Disparities in Fatal Police Shootings at the State Level.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to discern the relationship between state-level structural racism and Black-White disparities in police shootings of victims not known to be armed. METHODS: Using a Poisson regression, we evaluated the effect of structural racism on differences between states in Black-White disparities in fatal police shootings involving victims not known to be armed during the period from January 1, 2013 through June 30, 2017. We created a state racism index, which was comprised of five dimensions: (1) residential segregation; and gaps in (2) incarceration rates; (3

Health status and air pollution related socioeconomic concerns in urban China.

BACKGROUND: China is experiencing environmental issues and related health effects due to its industrialization and urbanization. The health effects associated with air pollution are not just a matter of epidemiology and environmental science research, but also an important social science issue. Literature about the relationship of socioeconomic factors with the environment and health factors is inadequate. The relationship between air pollution exposure and health effects in China was investigated with consideration of the socioeconomic factors. METHODS: Based on nationwide survey data of Chi

Social anxiety and alcohol problems: the roles of perceived descriptive and injunctive peer norms.

Although people with higher social anxiety (HSA) appear particularly vulnerable to alcohol-related problems it remains unclear why people with HSA experience such problems. One possibility is that HSA people's drinking behavior is influenced by their beliefs about others' drinking (i.e., descriptive norms) and/or others' approval of drinking (i.e., injunctive norms). The current study investigated the relationship between social anxiety, alcohol-related problems, drinking frequency and quantity, and descriptive and injunctive norms. The sample consisted of current drinkers with clinically elev

[Educational and social outcome after childhood cancer].

The survival rate improvement of childhood cancer survivors lead to question about their educational and social outcome. Authors suggest an international review in order to find risk factors of school or social failure after cancer experience. Principal cohort is studied in USA (the Children Cancer Survivor Study). Nevertheless, European studies are also published. The results vary, depending on subpopulation studied and on control choice (siblings or general population). Treatment improvement and supportive care make difficult to compare studies with current situations. Moreover, there are no

The association between social determinants of health and Parkinson's disease prevalence among U.S. adults: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) encompass the economic, social, and environmental conditions that shape health outcomes. While SDOH are increasingly recognized as fundamental drivers of chronic disease, their relationship with Parkinson's disease (PD) remains poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between individual and cumulative adverse SDOH and PD prevalence in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 24,018 adults from the 2003-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A cumul

Social Factors Influencing Decision-Making in Intracerebral Haemorrhage: A Survey among Neurology Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) is the most severe type of stroke characterized by high morbidity and mortality rates. While prognostic scales aim to predict outcomes based solely on medical information, clinicians' assessments may be influenced by patients' social factors, potentially resulting in inequitable care. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using a vignette-based survey presenting five pairs of fictitious ICH cases (10 total) was distributed to professionals involved in ICH patient care. Each pair included identical medical data and a comparable computed tomography scan.

Social contacts and other risk factors for respiratory infections among internally displaced people in Somaliland.

BACKGROUND: Populations affected by humanitarian crises experience high burdens of acute respiratory infections (ARI), potentially driven by risk factors for severe disease such as poor nutrition and underlying conditions, and risk factors that may increase transmission such as overcrowding and the possibility of high social mixing. However, little is known about social mixing patterns in these populations. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional social contact survey among internally displaced people (IDP) living in Digaale, a permanent IDP camp in Somaliland. We included questions on househ

Achieving pregnancy safely for HIV-serodiscordant couples: a social ecological approach.

The recognition and fulfilment of the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all individuals and couples affected by HIV, including HIV-serodiscordant couples, requires intervention strategies aimed at achieving safe and healthy pregnancies and preventing undesired pregnancies. Reducing risk of horizontal and vertical transmission and addressing HIV-related infertility are key components of such interventions. In this commentary, we present challenges and opportunities for achieving safe pregnancies for serodiscordant couples through a social ecological lens. At the individual lev
