Considering young and socially marginalized people in urban revitalization: evidence on enablers and barriers from a mid-size Canadian city.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored what enabled and constrained consideration of young and socially marginalized people's needs and interests in the downtown revitalization of a mid-size Canadian city. METHODS: In this interpretive descriptive study, we conducted nine semi-structured interviews with 10 key informants from the municipal, community organization and private sectors involved in the revitalization initiative. We analyzed interview transcripts following the framework method to identify main themes. RESULTS: According to participants, young and socially marginalized people's needs and

Designing a Patient-Centered Interdisciplinary Intervention to Promote Equitable Access to Kidney Transplantation across Health Systems: The STEPS Study.

In the United States, health inequities persist in the management of chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease, including unequal access to kidney transplantation. These disparities are deeply rooted in complex social and structural determinants of health, including socioeconomic status, race, geographic location, and healthcare access. Addressing these inequities necessitates a patient-centered interdisciplinary approach to improve outcomes and promote transplant access equity. This article describes the conceptualization and design of the System Interventions to Achieve Early and E

Destigmatizing borderline personality disorder with social justice and intersectional cultural humility: How researchers can construct and deconstruct stigma.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious psychiatric condition, especially stigmatized in women. Stigma is a social injustice, as it discredits and reduces the wholeness of a person to one of taint and discount. Psychological scientists play a uniquely powerful role in the stigmatization and destigmatization of BPD by constructing the meaning of BPD at each step of the research process. We discuss this powerful role and how to destigmatize BPD by incorporating an intersectionality framework that includes disability as a category of difference (as with gender, race, and sexuality). [Representation of self-care of health at work among urban bus drivers in Guadalajara, Mexico].

This study aimed to analyze the social representations of health self-care at work among urban bus drivers in Guadalajara, Mexico. The methodology was qualitative, with a multi-method design based on the theory of social representations. The first stage involved active observation sessions with the information recorded in field notes; in the second stage, the associative letter technique and successively hierarchized trees technique were applied to 20 drivers, submitting the data to a classical analysis of the free associations; a third stage involved semi-structured interviews with 4 drivers,

"We decide, you carry it out": a social network analysis of multidisciplinary long-term care teams.

The purpose of this study was to describe the structure of multidisciplinary long-term care teams by identifying the pattern of relationships that develop amongst staff as they go about their work. Using a social network analysis approach, team members were classified as occupying the same structural position based on their patterns of relationships with other team members. The analysis was based on the results of a self-administered survey of 93 health care workers on three teams in the same multilevel geriatric care facility in Metropolitan Toronto. A common structure of the teams was identi

Social rejection in social anxiety disorder: the role of performance deficits, evoked negative emotions and dissimilarity.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) not only fear social rejection, but accumulating evidence also shows that they are indeed less liked than their non-anxious counterparts. Three factors are hypothesized to play a role in this social anxiety-social rejection relationship: (1) social performance; (2) elicited negative emotions, and (3) perceived similarity. METHOD: Patients with SAD (N=63) and control participants (N=27) were observed during a 5 minutes 'getting acquainted' conversation with a male and female confederate who rated their social performance. Video-observers

Network analysis of social support and anxiety symptoms among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that focusing on specific symptoms, rather than general levels of impairment, may offer a more nuanced understanding of psychopathology. Given the unique social and psychological challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aims to explore the relationships between the three dimensions of perceived social support family support, friend support, and other support-and individual anxiety symptoms among college students. The pandemic context provides an opportunity to examine how different forms of social support may influence specific anxiety symptoms

Future destinations: how people cured of hepatitis C using direct acting antiviral drugs progress in a new HCV-free world. A thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs) transformed Hepatitis C (HCV) treatment, despite this uptake of DAAs remains lower than required to meet the WHO Sustainable Development Goal (3.3). Treatment with interferon was suggested to be able to deliver important outcomes for people who use drugs in addition to a viral cure, such as social redemption, and shift from a stigmatised identity. There is a lack of understanding if DAAs can deliver these transformative outcomes. METHODS: This recurrent cross-sectional study combines qualitative semi-structured interviews and dem

Socially isolated individuals are more prone to have newly diagnosed and prevalent type 2 diabetes mellitus - the Maastricht study.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), but it is unclear which elements play a crucial role in this association. Therefore, we assessed the associations of a broad range of structural and functional social network characteristics with normal glucose metabolism, pre-diabetes, newly diagnosed T2DM and previously diagnosed T2DM. METHODS: Participants originated from The Maastricht Study, a population-based cohort study (n = 2861, mean age 60.0 ± 8.2 years, 49% female, 28.8% T2DM (oversampled)). Social network characteristics were assessed through a name generator

Is Blood Thicker Than Water? The Influence of Kin Within a Bull Shark Social Network.

The influence of kinship on social structure (what we novelly refer to as "kinfluence") has been studied extensively within terrestrial taxa yet remains poorly understood in marine systems. While kin-based associations have been explored in teleost fish and cetaceans, few have investigated this within elasmobranchs, and none have combined fine-scale social behavior with both genomic relatedness and categorical kinship inference. This study utilized the Shark Reef Marine Reserve in Fiji, a site where a population of adult bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) aggregate in response to provisioning, …

Strengthening Perinatal Services Through Social Care: Outcomes of a Quality Improvement Initiative for a Health Center-Based Perinatal Care Program.

INTRODUCTION: Given the prevalence and consequences of unmet social needs in perinatal populations, there is a critical demand for perinatal care that addresses social needs. To better support health systems in providing comprehensive social and perinatal care services, this quality improvement initiative uses the Donabedian model for care quality to describe the structure, process, and outcomes of embedding an innovative perinatal care program with integrated social care into an established primary care center. PROCESS: The Improving Maternal Outcomes Now! (IMON) program was designed to addr

Peer presence and familiarity as key factors to reduce cocaine intake in both rats and humans: an effect mediated by the subthalamic nucleus.

RATIONALE: Stimulant use, including cocaine, often occurs in a social context whose influence is important to understand to decrease intake and reduce associated harms. Although the importance of social influence in the context of drug addiction is known, there is a need for studies assessing its neurobiological substrate and for translational research. OBJECTIVES: Here, we explored the influence of peer presence and familiarity on cocaine intake and its neurobiological basis. Given the regulatory role of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) on cocaine intake and emotions, we investigated its role o

Assessing social isolation in motor neurone disease: a Rasch analysis of the MND Social Withdrawal Scale.

OBJECTIVE: Social withdrawal is described as the condition in which an individual experiences a desire to make social contact, but is unable to satisfy that desire. It is an important issue for patients with motor neurone disease who are likely to experience severe physical impairment. This study aims to reassess the psychometric and scaling properties of the MND Social Withdrawal Scale (MND-SWS) domains and examine the feasibility of a summary scale, by applying scale data to the Rasch model. METHODS: The MND Social Withdrawal Scale was administered to 298 patients with a diagnosis of MND, a

Writing Qualitative Research and Evaluation for Clinical Audiences.

Qualitative methods draw from diverse traditions, from social science to nursing. Heterogeneity in approach and discipline make qualitative methodologies a vibrant form of scientific inquiry. At the same time, the range of knowledge, familiarity, and comfort with qualitative methods varies. The authors of this piece are social scientists with extensive qualitative writing experience, as well as experiences running writing groups, serving as peer reviewers, and being a journal editor. This brief article presents useful strategies and actionable tips for developing qualitative articles for peer-

Psychometric properties of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) in a longitudinal study of African Americans with anxiety disorders.

The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) is a widely used measure of social anxiety. However, no study has examined the psychometric properties of the LSAS in an African American sample. The current study examined the LSAS characteristics in 97 African Americans diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Overall, the original LSAS subscales showed excellent internal consistency and temporal stability. Similar to previous reports, fear and avoidance subscales were so highly correlated that they yielded redundant information. Confirmatory factor analyses for three previously proposed models failed to

[Self-damaging mechanisms. Motivation of drug- and luxury-abuse, drug consumption, tendency for suicide].

Abuse of legal and illegal drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, and suicide tend to be studied separately from each other, and different organizations concern themselves with their respective treatments. A study of self-damaging behavior patterns conducted at the University of Zurich has shown that one and the same motivational structure is expressed through these different manifestations: Processes of self-devaluation explain a large part of those behaviors that reduce the chances of survival. Since inhibition of self-actualization can be explained by social structures, it follows that preventive m…

Social recovery therapy for young people with emerging severe mental illness: the Prodigy RCT.

BACKGROUND: Young people with social disability and non-psychotic severe and complex mental health problems are an important group. Without intervention, their social problems can persist and have large economic and personal costs. Thus, more effective evidence-based interventions are needed. Social recovery therapy is an individual therapy incorporating cognitive-behavioural techniques to increase structured activity as guided by the participant's goals. OBJECTIVE: This trial aimed to test whether or not social recovery therapy provided as an adjunct to enhanced standard care over 9 months i

Assessing coercive control in intimate partner relationships: psychometric validation and clinical thresholds of a French version of the Coercive Control Screening Scale (CCSS-F).

Background: Coercive control is increasingly conceptualized as a chronic relational pattern of domination that may function as a mechanism of traumatization over time. Sustained exposure to intimidation, isolation, surveillance, and credible threat has been linked to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (CPTSD), and depressive symptomatology. Despite its relevance for trauma-informed assessment, no validated French-language instrument exists, and no empirically derived cutoff score has been established for the original Coercive Control Screening Scale (CCSS).Objective: This stud

High- versus low-anthropomorphic-cue packages and health-information trust: social presence and source credibility under explicit AI disclosure.

BACKGROUND: AI virtual opinion leaders are increasingly used in health communication, but it remains unclear whether bundled anthropomorphic-cue packages foster initial trust and information-adoption intention when AI identity is explicitly disclosed. METHODS: Guided by the Computers Are Social Actors paradigm, Social Presence Theory, Source Credibility Theory, and the Information Adoption Model, we conducted a single-factor between-subjects randomized experiment comparing overall high- and low-anthropomorphic-cue packages.
