Capsular warning syndrome: report of a case.

The "capsular warning syndrome" (CWS) is characterized by recurrent stereotypical episodes of motor and/or sensory dysfunction without cortical signs. CWS is a clinically well recognized entity, and carries a significant risk of capsular infarct. The ischemia is most likely ascribable to hemodynamic changes in diseased small penetrating vessels. Treatment remains controversial and none has been proven effective. We described a 66-year-old man having 15 episodes of stereotypical transient ischemic attack within four days. The findings of the diffusion-weighted image showed abnormalities confine

Public's and police officers' interpretation and handling of domestic violence cases: divergent realities.

The public's and police officers'interpretation and handling of realistic hypothetical domestic violence cases and their stereotypic views about domestic violence are discussed. A sample of 131 experienced officers, 127 novice officers, and 157 adult laypersons were randomly assigned to read a domestic violence case. Experienced officers were more likely to arrest only the husband than were laypersons or rookie officers even when respondents inferred that the husband was primarily responsible or had used violence before. Experienced officers considered their stereotypic beliefs about battered

Effects on stereotypy and other challenging behavior of matching rates of instruction to free-operant rates of responding.

Research has shown that when individuals are in situations that do not occasion one form of motoric responding, they will engage in another so that the overall level of motoric responding is homeostatic. The purpose of this study was to test whether students would substitute task-related behaviors for stereotypic or other challenging behaviors when the opportunity for active responding did or did not match the level of motoric responding in a free-operant baseline. Four students with mental retardation participated. Results showed that they did substitute behaviors, with stereotypic and other

Attenuation of morphine withdrawal signs by the GABA(B) receptor agonist baclofen.

The present study examined the effect of the gamma-aminobutyric acidB (GABA(B)) receptor agonist, baclofen on naloxone-induced withdrawal signs in morphine-dependent rats and modification by the antagonist, 3-aminopropyl-cyclohexylmethylphosphinic acid (CGP 46381). Morphine was administered via mini-osmotic pumps for 7 days to induce physical dependence. Baclofen (20 mg kg(-1)) decreased stereotyped head movements, chewing, chatter, ptosis and body weight loss, induced by naloxone (10 mg kg(-1)) in morphine-dependent rats. CGP 46381 (20 mg kg(-1)) reversed the effects exerted by baclofen on st

Perinatal fenvalerate exposure: behavioral and endocrinology changes in male rats.

The effects of maternal exposure to fenvalerate during the prenatal and postnatal periods of sexual brain differentiation were studied in adult male offspring. Behavioral (open field, stereotyped, and sexual behaviors), physical (sexual maturation, body and organ weights), endocrine (testosterone levels), and neurochemical (striatal and hypothalamic monoamine and respective metabolite levels) data were assessed. The results showed that there was no change in the age of testis descent or testis weight, nor were there changes in monoamine levels or stereotyped behavior. However, there were signi

Pemoline produces ipsilateral turning behavior in unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rats.

1. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received either a unilateral injection of 6-hydroxy-dopamine or vehicle injection into the medial forebrain bundle. 2. Two weeks post surgery, all rats received a pemoline challenge (250 mg/kg s.c.), and rotational and stereotyped behaviors were videotaped and analyzed. 3. All rats regardless of injection expressed stereotyped behaviors and hyper-locomotion after pemoline challenge. 4. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection was used to evaluate changes in the levels of dopamine, serotonin and their metabolites in neostriata. 5.

Annetocin, an annelid oxytocin-related peptide, induces egg-laying behavior in the earthworm, Eisenia foetida.

Annetocin, an oxytocin-related peptide which we isolated from the earthworm Eisenia foetida, induced a series of egg-laying-related behaviors in the earthworms. These stereotyped behaviors consisted of well-defined rotatory movements, characteristic body-shape changes, and mucous secretion from the clitellum. Each of these behaviors is known to be associated with formation of the cocoon in which eggs are deposited. In fact, some of the earthworms injected with annetocin (> 5 nmol) laid eggs. Such egg-laying-related behaviors except for oviposition were also induced by oxytocin, but not by Arg-

Is laparoscopy associated with a lower rate of postoperative adhesions than laparotomy? A comparative study in the rabbit.

This trial set out to test the hypothesis that there is no difference in the incidence of intra-abdominal adhesions after a stereotyped intraperitoneal injury created via laparoscopy or laparotomy. Twenty New Zealand White rabbits had a 2 x 2 cm area of peritoneum stripped off their caecum and adjacent parietal peritoneum, either by laparotomy or laparoscopy. Outcome was assessed by the incidence of adhesions to the test site and the wound. There was no difference in the rate of adhesions at the test site in the two groups. The rate of adhesions to the wound was different in the two groups (70

Does dizocilpine (MK-801) selectively block the enhanced responsiveness to repeated amphetamine administration?

In order to examine the hypothesis that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are selectively involved in the development of stimulant sensitization, we characterized the interaction between acute and chronic dizocilpine (MK-801) + amphetamine using a detailed behavioral analysis, including concurrent assessment of the locomotor and stereotype components of the stimulant response and continuous monitoring of all the various phases of the emergent sensitization. The results showed that MK-801 (0.125 mg/kg) significantly affected the acute response to amphetamine (0.5, 1.75, 4.0 mg/kg), increasi

Effect of schistosomiasis mansoni on open-field exploratory behavior in mice.

The response of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni to a novel environment has been investigated in an attempt to study the effects of the disease on brain cognitive function by using opto-varimix instrument and autotrack computer program. Two to 18 weeks infected mice showed lower ambulatory activities than their matched controls with the largest reduction occurring between weeks 6 to 10. Maximum effects were observed in week 8. The first 5 minutes of ambulatory activities, designated as the "first session", were 22.3% lower in infected mice as compared with controls. The decline in the fi

Some central effects of opioid antagonists. Part I.

This study concerned the influence of opioid antagonists: naloxone, naltrexone and diprenorphine on amphetamine hyperactivity in mice and rats, apomorphine hyperactivity in rats, amphetamine and apomorphine stereotypy in rats, and stereotyped gnawing induced by methylphenidate in mice. Naloxone, naltrexone and, in higher doses, diprenorphine attenuated the amphetamine hyperactivity in rats. In mice in the same test all antagonists at some doses produced attenuation. However they did not affect the apomorphine hyperactivity in rats. Both naloxone and naltrexone attenuated amphetamine and apomor

Modification of the behavioural effects of amphetamine by a GABA agonist in a primate species.

Acute administration of d-amphetamine in the marmoset results in a dose dependent increase in small head movements (checking), and an almost total suppression of purposeful activities and social interaction. It has little effect on locomotion and does not induce stereotyped gnawing. The GABA-agonist, muscimol, decreases checking, locomotion, activities and social interaction when given alone, but induces jerking movements at large doses. When administered in combination with amphetamine, muscimol induces persistent stereotyped gnawing. On the basis of the present findings and those of experime

A comparison of differential reinforcement procedures for treating automatically reinforced behavior.

Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit stereotypy, which can be socially stigmatizing, interfere with daily living skills, and affect skill acquisition. We compared differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) and differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) when neither procedure included response blocking or interruption for (a) reducing stereotypy, (b) increasing task engagement, and (c) increasing task completion. DRA contingencies yielded superior outcomes across each measure when evaluated with 3 individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

An exploratory study of the correlates of weight-based mistreatment at work.

Weight-based mistreatment (WBM), which reflects mistreatment through hostility, threats, underhanded comments, physical violence, or microaggressions that explicitly targets a person's larger body size, occurs frequently in the workplace. To begin to uncover why it occurs, this research documents correlates of WBM by investigating stigmatization of weight through four conceptual frames: stereotyping, the justification-suppression model of prejudice, objectification theory, and occupational contexts. Across a sample of 1,008 self-identified larger-bodied respondents, 383 paired coworkers, and d…

'I felt like I just belonged': urban multiculture and black Irish migrants in post-war Britain.

This article reevaluates historians' understanding of the Irish in post-war Britain from the perspective of a previously unresearched population, black and mixed-race Irish migrants. Writing on the Irish in Britain has lingered on themes such as stereotyping, discrimination, and ethnic profiling. More widely, some historians have framed Irish emigration and the diaspora around motifs of exile and reluctant departure, while others have highlighted the liberating potential of departure. Oral histories with black Irish migrants fall firmly into the latter, emancipatory camp, depicting urban, mult…

The right to be heard: exploring epistemic injustice in dementia care-A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Epistemic injustice, introduced by philosopher Miranda Fricker in 2007, refers to harm affecting individuals as knowers because of social prejudices and stereotyping. This leads to the partial or complete exclusion of certain individuals from knowledge building. People living with dementia are particularly vulnerable because cognitive impairments may reinforce assumptions about reduced credibility, marginalizing their voices in clinical, social, and family contexts and limiting opportunities to exercise epistemic agency. This research examines how people living with …
