Insights into the electrorheological and electrohydrodynamic regimes in electrically driven emulsions.

Recently, we reported the electrorheoimaging technique [Bahraminasr and Yethiraj, Phys. Rev. Res. 8, 013231 (2026)] and found that the frequency-dependent electric field of an oil-in-oil emulsion yields two distinct regimes: a high-frequency dipolar, electrorheological (ER) regime and a low-frequency electrohydrodynamic (EHD) regime. In this work, we identify a phenomenological model to fit the results in the ER regime to a classic yield-stress fluid and find collapse onto a master curve upon rescaling, consistent with a yield stress that grows approximately as E2. Macroscopic small-amplitude

Longitudinal multi-omics reveal phase-dependent viral adaptive strategies and functional potential during formation of algal-bacterial granular sludge.

Virus-prokaryote interactions within microbial aggregates critically influence microbiome function and stability, yet the interactive dynamics during microbial aggregation remain largely unexplored. Here, longitudinal multi-omics revealed that prokaryotic host community diversity underwent decline and subsequent recovery during algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) formation from activated sludge. Declined host diversity in the collapse phase enriched for lysogenic viruses and facilitated virus-host mutualistic symbiosis, during which the proportion of lysogenic metagenome-assembled genomes (

Surface-Engineered Selenium Nanozymes for Food Safety: Photoregulated Catalysis, Multimodal Antibacterial Mechanisms, and Emerging Applications in Food Processing, Packaging, and Biosensing.

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are increasingly recognized as promising nanozymes for food safety because they combine enzyme-mimetic catalytic activity, broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects, and relatively favorable biocompatibility. However, current understanding remains fragmented across materials science, microbiology, and food application research, and a critical synthesis focused on their food-system relevance is still lacking. This review examines how surface engineering and photoactivation are transforming SeNPs from general antimicrobial nanomaterials into multifunctional platforms fo

Breaking the proteasome balance: α-synuclein and the ubiquitin-proteasome system.

Aging is the major risk factor for synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. However, the molecular mechanisms linking aging to. α-Synuclein cytotoxicity remain incompletely understood. The progressive decline of proteostasis is central among these mechanisms, as the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and the autophagy-lysosome pathway fail to maintain the turnover of aggregation-prone proteins. In this review, we focus on the bidirectional crosstalk between α-Synuclein and the proteasome as a key driver of proteostasis collapse in

Low-Field MRI as a Multiparametric Tool for Large Engineered Tissue Characterization.

Advances in 3D bioprinting have enabled the fabrication of large and complex engineered tissues, but their increasing size demands non-invasive tools for monitoring structure, maturation, and perfusion. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers unique multiparametric capabilities, yet high-field systems remain costly and inaccessible for most laboratories. In this study, we evaluate the potential of low-field MRI (LF MRI, 0.3 T) as an affordable and versatile alternative to high-field MRI (HF MRI, 7 T) for characterizing bioprinted tissue constructs. Using standardized PLA and hydrogel scaffolds

The Lived Experience of Mortality in Cancer Care: A Phenomenologically Grounded Qualitative Study of Being-Towards-Death.

This paper presents findings from qualitative interviews with 19 cancer patients and survivors, examining how they experience and articulate the existential structure Heidegger calls being-towards-death. The study accomplishes two goals. First, it responds to the widespread misinterpretation of Heidegger in contemporary death studies, palliative care, and psycho-oncology. While existing research often treats being-towards-death as a vague metaphor or rhetorical gesture, this study takes Heidegger's account as a serious philosophical framework. Our team-composed largely of phenomenological phil

3D-Printed Stent-Like Polymeric Structures with Tunable Mechanical Properties and Ionic Conductivity for Reinforced Nerve Guidance Conduits.

Peripheral nerve injuries present a critical clinical challenge, particularly when bridging larger defects that exceed the capacity of conventional grafts. Although electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) provide a promising solution due to their piezoelectric properties and extracellular matrix-mimicking structure, in electrospun scaffold form, they lack the mechanical strength to resist luminal collapse and compressive forces from surrounding tissues. Here, we report a stent-inspired approach to reinforce PVDF-TrFE conduits by integr

Antifungal Activity of Genistein Against Phytopathogenic Fungi Valsa mali Through ROS-Mediated Lipid Peroxidation.

Valsa mali (V. mali) is a necrotrophic fungus responsible for apple Valsa canker, which significantly diminishes apple production yields and quality in China. Our serendipitous findings revealed that genistein significantly inhibits the mycelial growth of V. mali, with an inhibition rate reaching 42.36 ± 3.22% at a concentration of 10 µg/mL. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that genistein caused significant changes in the structure of V. mali, including mycelial contraction, distortion, deformity, collapse, and irregular protrusions. Transmission electron microscopy analysis reve

The proteasome as a druggable target with multiple therapeutic potentialities: Cutting and non-cutting edges.

Ubiquitin Proteasome System (UPS) is an adaptable and finely tuned system that sustains proteostasis network under a large variety of physiopathological conditions. Its dysregulation is often associated with the onset and progression of human diseases; hence, UPS modulation has emerged as a promising new avenue for the development of treatments of several relevant pathologies, such as cancer and neurodegeneration. The clinical interest in proteasome inhibition has considerably increased after the FDA approval in 2003 of bortezomib for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma, which is now used in

Induction of steady-state glomeruloid sphere by self-assembly from human embryonic kidney cells.

The glomerulus is a network of capillaries known as a tuft, located at the beginning of a nephron in the kidney. Here we describe a novel method for the induction of a macroscopically visible three-dimensional glomerulus-like sphere (GLS). This procedure did not require any additional cytokines and completed the formation of spheres within 24 h. After the formation was complete, GLS maintained a steady state for at least five days without proliferation and without a decrease in viability. Therefore, this procedure assists various assays for a prolong period of time. Overall, our protocol allow

Copper or/and arsenic induce oxidative stress-cascaded, nuclear factor kappa B-dependent inflammation and immune imbalance, trigging heat shock response in the kidney of chicken.

Excessive amount of copper (Cu) and inorganic arsenic (iAs) coexists in drinking water in many regions, this is associated with high risk of nephropathy, defined as chronic structural and functional disorders of the kidney. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, a total of 72 day-old Hy-line chickens were exposed to 300 mg/kg copper sulphate or/and 30 mg/kg arsenic trioxide for 12 weeks. Indicators of oxidative stress, inflammation and heat shock proteins (HSPs) production were analyzed in kidney. The results showed that, when the toxicant was administrated

Passive movement of human soft palate during respiration: A simulation of 3D fluid/structure interaction.

This study reconstructed a three dimensional fluid/structure interaction (FSI) model to investigate the compliance of human soft palate during calm respiration. Magnetic resonance imaging scans of a healthy male subject were obtained for model reconstruction of the upper airway and the soft palate. The fluid domain consists of nasal cavity, nasopharynx and oropharynx. The airflow in upper airway was assumed as laminar and incompressible. The soft palate was assumed as linear elastic. The interface between airway and soft palate was the FSI interface. Sinusoidal variation of velocity magnitude

Tuning synaptic transmission in the hippocampus by stress: the CRH system.

To enhance survival, an organism needs to remember-and learn from-threatening or stressful events. This fact necessitates the presence of mechanisms by which stress can influence synaptic transmission in brain regions, such as hippocampus, that subserve learning and memory. A major focus of this series of monographs is on the role and actions of adrenal-derived hormones, corticosteroids, and of brain-derived neurotransmitters, on synaptic function in the stressed hippocampus. Here we focus on the contribution of hippocampus-intrinsic, stress-activated CRH-CRH receptor signaling to the function

Biofouling and pollutant removal during long-term operation of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor treating municipal wastewater.

Two different sludge retention times (SRTs) were tested in order to assess the impact on membrane fouling and effluent quality in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Two up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors (1 l volume) coupled to external tubular ultrafiltration membranes (filtration area = 81 cm(2)) were operated at a hydraulic retention time of 3 h and two different SRTs (100 and 60 days). The transmembrane pressure (TMP), flux (J) and relevant parameters to assess water quality were measured. Effluents from UASB reactors were filtered for 500 h without intermediate cleaning.

Micellization of alkyl-propoxy-ethoxylate surfactants in water-polar organic solvent mixtures.

The effects of cosolvents (glycerol, ethanol, and isopropanol) on the self-assembly of novel alkyl-propoxy-ethoxylate surfactants in aqueous solutions have been investigated with a focus on the (i) quantification of solvent effects on the critical micelle concentration (cmc), (ii) free-energy contributions to micellization, (iii) local environment in the micellar solution, and (iv) structure of the micelles. The introduction of the polar organic solvents considered in this work into water decreases cohesive forces in the solvent mixture, resulting in an increase in the solubility of the surfac

The conformational plasticity of calmodulin upon calcium complexation gives a model of its interaction with the oedema factor of Bacillus anthracis.

We analyzed the conformational plasticity of calmodulin (CaM) when it is bound to the oedema factor (EF) of Bacillus anthracis and its response to calcium complexation with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The EF-CaM complex was simulated during 15 ns for three different levels of calcium bound to CaM. They were respectively no calcium ion (EF-(Apo-CaM)), two calcium ions bound to the C-terminal domain of CaM (EF-(2Ca-CaM)), and four calcium ions bound to CaM (EF-(4Ca-CaM)). Calculations were performed using AMBER package. The analysis of the MD simulations illustrates how CaM forces EF in

The coexistence of acute aortic dissection with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease--description of two hypertensive patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute aortic dissection is a rare but potentially lethal disease characterized by high early mortality when left untreated. However, survival may be significantly improved by the timely institution of appropriate medical and/or surgical therapy. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common hereditary disorders, accounting for 8-10% of the cases of end-stage renal disease. Hypertension occurs frequently and is an early manifestation of ADPKD in approximately 50-70% of non-azotemic patients. ADPKD, often caused by mutations in the PKD1 gene, is assoc

Calcium induced N-terminal gating and pore collapse in connexin-46/50 gap junctions.

Gap junctions facilitate electrical and metabolic coupling essential for tissue function. Under ischemic conditions (e.g., heart attack or stroke), elevated intracellular calcium (Ca²+) uncouples these communication pathways to limit the spread of cytotoxic signals, yet the structural basis of this protective response remains unclear. Here, using single-particle cryo-EM, we define the Ca²+-dependent gating mechanism of native connexin-46/50 (Cx46/50) gap junction channels. Ca2+ binding promotes an ensemble of N-terminal (NT) domain conformations spanning destabilized and fully gated states. Th
