Development of a machine learning-based prediction model for acute kidney injury associated with respiratory failure in the intensive care unit.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent and severe complication in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with respiratory failure, associated with high mortality, prolonged hospitalization, and substantial healthcare burden. Conventional risk scores, such as SOFA and APACHE II, are not optimized for AKI prediction in this heterogeneous population. This study aimed to develop and validate an early AKI prediction model using machine learning. We analyzed 10,780 adult ICU patients with unspecified respiratory failure from the MIMIC-IV database, of whom 53.96% developed AKI according to KDIGO criteri

Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Gout Using Polygenic Risk Scores and Clinical Variables: A Korean Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of gout, a chronic metabolic disease, has recently increased. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) represent a useful tool for predicting patient outcomes of this condition. However, the clinical utility of PRS in disease prediction remains controversial. METHODS: Using data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, machine learning (ML) models were developed to predict gout based on PRS and clinical variables such as uric acid, lifestyle habits, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) profiles. Five supervised learning algorithms were applied: logistic regression (a tradition

Multi-Source Transfer Learning Via Multi-Kernel Support Vector Machine Plus for B-Mode Ultrasound-Based Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Liver Cancers.

B-mode ultrasound (BUS) imaging is a routine tool for diagnosis of liver cancers, while contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) provides additional information to BUS on the local tissue vascularization and perfusion to promote diagnostic accuracy. In this work, we propose to improve the BUS-based computer aided diagnosis for liver cancers by transferring knowledge from the multi-view CEUS images, including the arterial phase, portal venous phase, and delayed phase, respectively. To make full use of the shared labels of paired of BUS and CEUS images to guide knowledge transfer, support vector mach

Machine learning identifies the independent role of dysplasia in the prediction of response to chemotherapy in AML.

The independent prognostic impact of specific dysplastic features in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains controversial and may vary between genomic subtypes. We apply a machine learning framework to dissect the relative contribution of centrally reviewed dysplastic features and oncogenetics in 190 patients with de novo AML treated in ALFA clinical trials. One hundred and thirty-five (71%) patients achieved complete response after the first induction course (CR). Dysgranulopoiesis, dyserythropoiesis and dysmegakaryopoiesis were assessable in 84%, 83% and 63% patients, respectively. Multi-linea

A Deep Transfer Learning Approach to Reducing the Effect of Electrode Shift in EMG Pattern Recognition-Based Control.

An important barrier to commercialization of pattern recognition myoelectric control of prostheses is the lack of robustness to confounding factors such as electrode shift, skin impedance variations, and learning effects. To overcome this challenge, a novel supervised adaptation approach based on transfer learning (TL) with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed which requires only a short training session (a few seconds for each class) to recalibrate the system. TL is proposed as a solution to the problem of insufficient calibration data due to short training times for both classifi

Representation Learning Approaches to Detect False Arrhythmia Alarms from ECG Dynamics.

The high rate of intensive care unit false arrhythmia alarms can lead to disruption of care and slow response time due to desensitization of clinical staff. We study the use of machine learning models to detect false ventricular tachycardia (v-tach) alarms using ECG waveform recordings. We propose using a Supervised Denoising Autoencoder (SDAE) to detect false alarms using a low-dimensional representation of ECG dynamics learned by minimizing a combined reconstruction and classification loss. We evaluate our algorithms on the PhysioNet Challenge 2015 dataset, containing over 500 records (over

Identifying transdiagnostic neurobiomarkers for precision major psychiatric disorders via machine learning: Causes, findings, and future directions.

The diagnostic criteria of psychiatric disorders rest solely on symptoms rather than etiologies; this led to the lack of objective biomarkers for diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment of major psychiatric disorders (MPDs) including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Facing this bottleneck problem, we firstly started our review from the evolution of psychiatric nosology for the diagnosis of MPDs which refined from categorical to dimensional classification. Specifically, the neuroimaging was sought as an intermediate phenotype to solve the dilemma introduce

Kernel Temporal Difference based Reinforcement Learning for Brain Machine Interfaces.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) enable people with disabilities to control external devices with their motor intentions through a decoder. Compared with supervised learning, reinforcement learning (RL) is more promising for the disabled because it can assist them to learn without actual limb movement. Current RL decoders deal with tasks with immediate reward delivery. But for tasks where the reward is only given by the end of the trial, existing RL methods may take a long time to train and are prone to becoming trapped in the local minima. In this paper, we propose to embed temporal difference

Three-dimensional morphometric analysis of the renal vasculature.

Vascular topology and morphology are critical in the regulation of blood flow and the transport of small solutes, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Renal vascular morphology is particularly challenging, since many arterial walls are partially wrapped by the walls of veins. In the absence of a precise characterization of three-dimensional branching vascular geometry, accurate computational modeling of the intrarenal transport of small diffusible molecules is impossible. An enormous manual effort was required to achieve a relatively precise characterization of

TEPAPA: a novel in silico feature learning pipeline for mining prognostic and associative factors from text-based electronic medical records.

Vast amounts of clinically relevant text-based variables lie undiscovered and unexploited in electronic medical records (EMR). To exploit this untapped resource, and thus facilitate the discovery of informative covariates from unstructured clinical narratives, we have built a novel computational pipeline termed Text-based Exploratory Pattern Analyser for Prognosticator and Associator discovery (TEPAPA). This pipeline combines semantic-free natural language processing (NLP), regular expression induction, and statistical association testing to identify conserved text patterns associated with out
