Global Plastic Surgery: A Review of the Field and a Call for Virtual Training in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Lack of surgical access severely harms countless populations in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Many types of surgery could be fulfilled by the plastic surgeon, as populations in these areas often experience trauma, burns, cleft lip and palate, and other relevant medical issues. Plastic surgeons continue to contribute significant time and energy to global health, primarily by participating in short mission trips intended to provide many surgeries in a short time frame. These trips, while cost-effective for lack of long-term commitments, are not sustainable as they require high i

Perioperative Antimicrobial Prophylaxis: Knowledge, Beliefs, and Practices Among Plastic Surgeons in Upper Limb Surgeries.

BACKGROUND: Surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis (SAP) is vital for preventing surgical site infections (SSIs). However, variability in SAP practices and the inappropriate use of antibiotics pose significant challenges in upper limb surgery. Despite its importance, no unified guidelines exist to standardize SAP practices. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, beliefs, and practices of plastic surgeons regarding SAP in upper limb and hand surgeries. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using an online self-administered survey distributed to all Saudi plastic surgeons in March

The Impact of Psychiatric Comorbidities on Outcomes and Quality of Life in Plastic Surgery: A Literature Review and Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing plastic surgery have higher rates of psychiatric disorders, which can influence surgical outcomes and quality of life (QoL). METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients with or without psychiatric comorbidities who underwent reduction mammaplasty or body contouring (panniculectomy or abdominoplasty) from 2016 through 2022. Propensity score matching accounted for age, body mass index (BMI), race and ethnicity, bariatric surgery history, ptosis, and breast tissue mass. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and postoperative outcomes were compared.

Surgical Wound Complications in Postbariatric Patients Undergoing Body Contouring Plastic Surgeries: The Challenges of Healing.

BACKGROUND: Healing is the final stage of surgical trauma, and its effective management is essential. However, this complex process is influenced by multiple factors, making its control challenging and susceptible to changes, especially in at-risk populations. In this context, postbariatric patients are more prone to postoperative complications, particularly when they undergo body-contouring plastic surgeries. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of surgical wound complications and the associated factors in postbariatric patients undergoing body-contouring plastic su

Initial postoperative plasticity as a predictor of mid-term stereoacuity outcome after surgery for intermittent exotropia.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) would cause different degrees of damage to stereopsis. We aimed to introduce a visual perception plasticity score (VPPS) that reflects initial postoperative plasticity and evaluate its effectiveness in predicting the mid-term surgical outcome in IXT patients. METHODS: A total of 149 patients with intermittent exotropia who underwent surgery in November 2018 and October 2019 were recruited. All subjects underwent detailed ocular examinations before and after surgery. VPPS were calculated based on visual perception examination system at one week postoper

Plasticity and Function of Spinal Oxytocin and Vasopressin Signaling during Recovery from Surgery with Nerve Injury.

WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS TOPIC: WHAT THIS ARTICLE TELLS US THAT IS NEW: BACKGROUND:: Recovery from pain after surgery is faster after cesarean delivery than after other abdominal procedures. The authors hypothesized that recovery in rats after surgery could be reversed by antagonism of spinal oxytocin or vasopressin receptors, that there may be a sex difference, and that spinal oxytocin innervation could change after surgery. METHODS: Male and female rats underwent partial spinal nerve ligation surgery. Effects of nonselective and selective oxytocin and vasopressin 1A receptor antagoni

Tsugishige Kondo, The Father of Japanese Surgery: Exploring the History of Hideyo Noguchi's Hand Reconstruction With a Forearm Flap Before the Establishment of Plastic Surgery in Japan.

Hideyo Noguchi is one of the most famous scientists in Japan's history, and his portrait has adorned the ¥1,000 banknotes since 2004. He had a childhood burn injury resulting in severe hand scarring and contracture that plagued his early life and education. The resulting hand deformity required 3 separate reconstructions with the third and most complex surgery performed by Professor Tsugishige Kondo just before Noguchi's final medical doctor license examination in 1897. In this surgery, Kondo released the contractures using the first radial forearm flap performed in Japan long before the establ

A unique case of segmental avulsion of mandible in pediatric patient: why is plastic surgery referral mandatory at initial visit?

The mandible is one of the most frequently fractured facial bone, most commonly by automobile accidents followed by fall from heights. However, segmental avulsion of mandible, that too in pediatric population is rarely reported. We report a case of 10-year-old male child sustaining facial injury following fall from a tree, resulting in complete segmental avulsion of the mandible highlighting the importance of early plastic surgery referral to optimize treatment outcomes. After clinical and radiological evaluation, the patient underwent free fibula osseocutaneous flap reconstruction. Given the

Evaluating Large Language Model's accuracy in current procedural terminology coding given operative note templates across various plastic surgery sub-specialties.

BACKGROUND: Manual CPT coding from operative notes is a time-intensive process that adds to the administrative burden in healthcare. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer a promising solution, but their accuracy in assigning CPT codes based on full operative note templates remains largely untested. Thus, this study evaluates the ability of three LLMs - GPT-4, Gemini, and Copilot - to generate accurate CPT codes from operative note templates across diverse plastic surgery procedures. METHODS: Twenty-six deidentified operative note templates from six plastic surgery subspecialities were entered in

Perception of Patients, Physicians, and Chaperones Regarding the Use of Chaperones During Patient Examinations for Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

In this systematic review, we searched electronic databases for literature addressing physician use of chaperones during examinations of patients undergoing plastic surgery from the perspective of the patient, physician, and chaperone from inception of the database until April 2023. After screening 939 articles, we included seven studies in a systematic review. We conducted an inductive thematic analysis of four domains (physician perspective, patient perspective, chaperone perspective, and chaperone documentation). The results of the analysis showed that surgeons who are experienced, are men,
