Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and migraine: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: In this narrative review, we summarize experimental and clinical evidence demonstrating mechanistic connections between POTS and … POTS may be explained by common pathologic mechanisms. There is evidence that dysregulation of the sympathetic nervous system, alterations in central and peripheral hemodynamics, and central sensitization increase vulnerability to both POTS and migraine. Non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments that target these shared mechanisms may provide significant benefit for t …

Quantitative assessment of the relationship between behavioral and autonomic dynamics during propofol-induced unconsciousness.

During general anesthesia, both behavioral and autonomic changes are caused by the administration of anesthetics such as propofol. Propofol produces unconsciousness by creating highly structured oscillations in brain circuits. The anesthetic also has autonomic effects due to its actions as a vasodilator and myocardial depressant. Understanding how autonomic dynamics change in relation to propofol-induced unconsciousness is an important scientific and clinical question since anesthesiologists often infer changes in level of unconsciousness from changes in autonomic dynamics. Therefore, we prese

Autonomic nervous system function in women with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Abnormalities in autonomic function have been observed in people with anorexia nervosa. However, the majority of investigations have utilised heart rate variability as the sole assessment of autonomic activity. The current study utilised a variety of methodologies to assess autonomic nervous system function in women with a current diagnosis of anorexia, a past diagnosis of anorexia who were weight-restored, and healthy controls. METHODS: The sample included 37 participants: 10 participants with anorexia, 17 weight-restored participants (minimum body mass index > 18.5 for minimum of 1

Selective defect of baroreflex blood pressure buffering with intact cardioinhibition in a woman with familial aniridia.

We report a symptomatic failure of the baroreceptor blood pressure (BP) buffering mechanism in a woman with familial aniridia. Her baseline BP oscillated at 0.1 Hz, the frequency of Mayer waves, with increased amplitude on standing without orthostatic hypotension. Although sudomotor function was normal, cutaneous thermoregulatory function and BP response to Valsalva's maneuver were abnormal. The defective BP buffer mechanism suggests Mayer waves could be a sympathetic mediated cardiovascular resonance. Baroreceptor cardioinhibition was intact. We presume that the lesion is in the rostral aspec

Central and peripheral noradrenalin regulation in eating disorders.

Norepinephrine and its metabolites were studied in various body fluids (plasma, urine and cerebrospinal fluid) of patients with anorexia ner … on, bradicardia, hypothermia and depression. Evidence is presented that the reduced activity of the sympathetic nervous system is caused by starvation (anorexia nervosa) or intermittent dieting (bulimia nervosa).

The central site of the sympatho-inhibitory action of 5-hydroxytryptamine in the cat.

The aim of this study was to determine the site in the CNS at which 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) inhibits efferent sympathetic nerve activity in the cat. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (3 and 10 micrograms/kg), given into the lateral cerebral ventricle, produced immediate non dose related increases in mean blood pressure (MBP), heart rate (HR) and renal nerve activity (RNA). Larger doses (30 and 100 micrograms/kg i.c.v.) produced gradual decreases in blood pressure, heart rate and renal nerve activity, which did not occur when access of the drug to the fourth ventricle was prevented. Administration of 5-HT

Postpacing tachycardia: autonomic involvement.

The cessation of pacing from the sinus node region is followed by a transient sinus tachycardia or postpacing tachycardia (PPT). We sought to characterize autonomic involvement in PPT. We used alpha-chloralose-anesthetized dogs and recorded electrocardiograms, blood pressure, and electrograms from the sinus node, right atrium, right ventricle, and His bundle. Both vagi and both stellate ganglia were transected. PPT developed immediately after either linear or stepped heart rate changes. PPT followed pacing from the rostral but not the caudal region of the sulcus terminalis. Independent manipul

The alpha(2A) adrenoceptor and the sympathetic postganglionic neuron contribute to the development of neuropathic heat hyperalgesia in mice.

We have addressed the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain. Using a new neuropathic mouse model, we examined the development of hyperalgesia in transgenic mice lacking functional alpha(2A) adrenoceptors and in sympathectomized wild-type mice, to determine if sympathetic-sensory coupling generates hyperalgesia. The development of neuropathic heat hyperalgesia required the presence of both the alpha(2A) adrenoceptor and the sympathetic postganglionic neuron (SPGN), but the development of mechanical hyperalgesia did not require either the a…

Autonomic Mechanisms of Blood Pressure Control in Females across the Lifespan.

This review summarizes current knowledge on autonomic cardiovascular function, with a focus on sympathetic neural control, in human females across the lifespan in health and disease. Specifically, sympathetic activity at rest and during stressors, sympathetic transduction into vascular resistance or blood pressure, and baroreflex sensitivity under physiological conditions (e.g., the menstrual cycle, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, and menopause) are reviewed. Furthermore, how sympathetic neural control is influenced by pathological conditions that only affect females (e.g., polycystic ovarian

Dynamic sympathetic regulation of left ventricular contractility studied in the isolated canine heart.

We investigated the dynamic sympathetic regulation of left ventricular end-systolic elastance (Ees) using an isolated canine ventricular pre … timulation (0.67 +/- 0.32 mmHg . ml-1 . Hz-1, not significant). Although the mechanism by which the sympathetic nervous system regulates cardiac contractility is different depending on whether the left or right sympathetic nerves are activated, this difference does not affect the apparent response of Ees to dynamic sympathetic stimulation.

Heart-Brain Axis: Effects of Neurologic Injury on Cardiovascular Function.

A complex interaction exists between the nervous and cardiovascular systems. A large network of cortical and subcortical brain regions control cardiovascular function via the sympathetic and parasympathetic outflow. A dysfunction in one system may lead to changes in the function of the other. The effects of cardiovascular disease on the nervous system have been widely studied; however, our understanding of the effects of neurological disorders on the cardiovascular system has only expanded in the past 2 decades. Various pathologies of the nervous system can lead to a wide range of alterations

Carotid baroreceptor stimulation prevents oxidative stress by inhibiting MAO-A and prevents cardiac remodeling in obese rats.

OBJECTIVE: Sympathetic nervous system overactivation and abnormal lipid metabolism are featured in obesity and may lead to cardiac remodeling. The effects of carotid baroreceptor stimulation (CBS) on cardiac remodeling in obese rats and the underlying mechanisms were explored. METHODS: An obesity model was induced by 16-week high-fat diet feeding. A CBS device was implanted at the 8th week. Body weight and blood pressure measurements, electrocardiography, echocardiography, and glucose and insulin tolerance tests were conducted before sampling. Plasma analysis and histological and biological a…

Electrochemical Skin Conductance Alterations during Spinal Cord Stimulation: An Experimental Study.

Despite the well-known clinical effects of spinal cord stimulation (SCS), the mechanisms of action have not yet been fully unraveled. The pr … ontrols were significantly different from zero. This study showed that SCS does not influencing the sympathetic nervous system in patients with FBSS, as measured by skin conductance levels. Moreover, it suggested that there is no normalization of the functioning of the sympathetic nervous system, despite the effectiveness of SCS to reduce pain intensity.

Neural regulation of hypoxia-inducible factors and redox state drives the pathogenesis of hypertension in a rodent model of sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is one of the most common causes of hypertension in western societies. OSA causes chronic intermittent hypoxia … in other regions of the brain stem that do not receive input from the carotid body or signal to the sympathetic nervous system. Thus sympathetic nervous system homeostasis is dependent on a balance between HIF-1α and HIF-2α, disruption of which results in hypertension in OSA patients.
