The role of the cerebellum in 'real' and 'imaginary' line bisection explored with 1-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The role of the cerebellum is well characterized for many motor processes and for some cognitive tasks, although its contribution to lateralized spatial judgement has never been probed directly. To address this omission, we investigated the effects of cerebellar disruption on two different line bisection tasks in eight healthy subjects. Based on previous evidence of crossed cerebellar-cortical connections we predicted a shift in the perceived midline that would occur in opposite directions depending on the cerebellar hemisphere targeted. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), giv

Effects of dilemmas and aromas on performance of the Iowa Gambling Task.

Males outscore females on the original version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). This may be due to differential regional prefrontal cortical activation by males and females during the task. PET imagery indicates increased activation in dorsolateral (DL) prefrontal cortex (PFC) in males and in medial orbital (ORB) PFC in females. A recent study reported that females' scores were elevated to the level of males' by having them deliberate moral dilemmas during the IGT. This was presumably due to a relative shift in PFC activation from medial ORB PFC to DL PFC areas. In the present study, after add

Continuous assessment of low back loads in long-term care nurses.

Considerable effort has been spent evaluating aspects of low back injury risk in nursing yet comprehensive evaluation of all work tasks has been limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate peak and cumulative lumbar spine loads experienced by personal support workers. A total of 20 female long-term care workers were observed and had trunk posture monitored via an inclinometer throughout their shift. When adjusted for an 8-h workday, workers experienced cumulative loads of 21.3 +/- 4.6 MNs, 1.8 +/- 0.6 MNs and 2.9 +/- 1.4 MNs for compression, lateral and anterior shear, respectively. Pat

Developmental changes in activation and effective connectivity in phonological processing.

The current study examined developmental changes in activation and effective connectivity among brain regions during a phonological processing task, using fMRI. Participants, ages 9-15, were scanned while performing rhyming judgments on pairs of visually presented words. The orthographic and phonological similarity between words in the pair was independently manipulated, so that rhyming judgment could not be based on orthographic similarity. Our results show a developmental increase in activation in the dorsal part of left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), accompanied by a decrease in the dorsal p

Assessment of fitness to perform using a validated self-test in obstetric and gynecological night shifts in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The field of obstetrics and gynecology requires complex decision-making and skills because of unexpected high-risk situations. These skills are influenced by alertness, reaction time, and concentration. Night shifts result in sleep deprivation, which might impair these functions, although it is still unclear to what extent. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether a night shift routinely impairs the obstetrics and gynecology consultants' and residents' fitness to perform and whether this reaches a critical limit compared with relevant frames of reference. STUDY DESIGN:

Effectiveness of emergency surgeries performed by nurse-surgeons and other non-physician providers: a systematic review and proportional meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emergency surgical care is a critical yet often unavailable component of health systems in many low-resource and crisis-affected settings. Due to chronic shortages of trained surgeons, task-shifting models involving nurses and other non-physician providers, such as clinical or assistant medical officers, have been explored to deliver essential surgical interventions. This systematic review and proportional meta-analysis evaluated the procedural success, safety profile, and clinical outcomes of emergency surgeries performed by nurse-surgeons and other non-physician providers across

Task-specific plantar pressure adaptations in individuals with patellofemoral pain syndrome during dynamic activities: a systematic review.

Altered plantar pressure distribution may be associated with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFP), particularly during dynamic activities; however, findings on task-specific adaptations remain inconsistent. A systematic search was conducted in major databases for articles published up to January 2025 using key terms on patellar/knee pain, plantar pressure, and foot loading. Studies were included if they compared plantar pressure variables between individuals with PFP and controls during walking, running, stair descent, squatting, or jumping. Eleven studies met the eligibility criteria. Across st

Transcranial alternating current stimulation selectively modulates aperiodic EEG component: Unveiling alternative mechanisms of modulation.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) mechanisms remain poorly understood. While tACS is expected to modulate periodic electroencephalography (EEG) activity due to the imposition of oscillatory alternating currents, it may also modulate the aperiodic EEG component, suggesting alternative tACS mechanisms that have not yet been explored. This study examined whether 20-minute tACS session delivered at 40 Hz over C3/C4 can selectively modulate periodic and aperiodic components. METHODS: We implemented a paired, counterbalanced, and sham-controlled design consisting of two

Green vehicle routing optimization based on dynamic constraint selection co-evolutionary algorithm.

Aiming at the problems of single solution objective in the existing green vehicle routing optimization process and real-time speed change during vehicle travel, a multi-objective green vehicle routing problem with time window constraints in time-varying conditions(MOGVRPTW-TV) is established, then a co-evolutionary framework-based constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for the solving of the model is proposed. First, to better match the actual logistics distribution, this model considers the impact of time-varying speed and capacitated variation on carbon emissions based on capacit

One ring to rule them all: The unifying role of prefrontal cortex in steering task-related brain dynamics.

Surviving and thriving in a complex world require intricate balancing of higher order brain functions with essential survival-related behaviours. Exactly how this is achieved is not fully understood but a large body of work has shown that different regions in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) play key roles for diverse cognitive and emotional tasks including emotion, control, response inhibition, mental set shifting and working memory. We hypothesised that the key regions are hierarchically organised and we developed a framework for discovering the driving brain regions at the top of the hierarchy,

Glaucoma-associated abnormalities in cortical activity during a visuocognitive task.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate neurophysiological dynamics during a visuocognitive task in glaucoma patients vs. healthy controls. METHODS: Fifteen patients with early-stage primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and fifteen age-matched healthy participants underwent a "go/no-go" task, monitored with EEG. Participants had to semantically categorize visual objects in central vision, with animal or furniture as targets according to the experimental block. RESULTS: Early visual processing was delayed by 50 ms in patients with POAG compared to controls. The patients displayed a smaller difference between

Reward-driven modulation of spatial attention in the human frontal eye-field.

Attentional selection and the decision of where to make an eye-movement are driven by various factors such as the representation of salience, task goal, and stimulus relevance, as well as expectations or predictions based on past experience. Brain systems implicated in these processes recruit cortico-subcortical areas including the Frontal Eye-Field (FEF), parietal cortex, or superior colliculus. How these areas interact to govern attention remains elusive. Priority maps of space have been observed in several brain regions, but the neural substrates where different sources of information are c

Exploring autonomic regulation in children with ADHD with and without comorbid anxiety disorder through three systematic levels of cardiac vagal control analysis: Rest, reactivity, and recovery.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, characterized by reduced vagally mediated Heart Rate Variability (HRV), has been associated with Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study investigated the dynamic vagal modulation of cardiac output in response to shifts in environmental demands in children and adolescents with ADHD, with and without a comorbid anxiety disorder. High-frequency HRV (HF-HRV) measures were obtained from 46 children and adolescents ranging from 6 to 17 (M = 9.38; SD = 2.31) years old, during three successive experimental conditions: a baseline record

A sex-dependent role for the prelimbic cortex in impulsive action both before and following early cocaine abstinence.

Although impulsive action is strongly associated with addiction, the neural underpinnings of this relationship and how they are influenced by sex have not been well characterized. Here, we used a titrating reaction time task to assess differences in impulsive action in male and female Long Evans rats both before and after short (4-6 days) or long (25-27 days) abstinence from 2 weeks of cocaine or water/saline self-administration (6 h daily access). Neural activity in the prelimbic cortex (PrL) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) core was assessed at each time point. We found that a history of cocaine

Transfer effects of abacus training on transient and sustained brain activation in the frontal-parietal network.

Understanding the neural mechanisms of training-induced brain plasticity has significant implications for improving academic achievement. Previous studies suggest abacus-based mental calculation (AMC) training significantly improves individual's arithmetic capability, and the frontal-parietal network is suggested to be the key neural circuit underlying AMC. Yet, it remains unclear how AMC training shifts brain activation in this network and whether the training effect is transferable or not. The current study aimed to address these questions using a longitudinal design engaging an experimental

Design fluency and neuroanatomical correlates in 54 neurosurgical patients with lesions to the right hemisphere.

We addressed the neuroanatomical correlates of 54 right-brain-damaged neurosurgical patients on visuo-spatial design fluency, which is a measure of the ability to generate/plan a series of new abstract combinations in a flexible way. 22.2% of the patients were impaired. They failed the task because they did not use strategic behavior, in particular they used rotational strategy to a significantly lower extent and produced a significantly higher rate of perseverative errors. Overall performance did not correlate with neuropsychological tests, suggesting that proficient performance was independe

Male and female Wistar rats differ in decision-making performance in a rodent version of the Iowa Gambling Task.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) measures decision-making processes by simulating real-life decisions involving reward, punishment, and uncertainty of outcomes. In humans, men show more choices for the advantageous option than women. Here, we investigated sex differences in a rat model of the IGT (r-IGT). In our r-IGT mildly food-deprived rats learn to differentiate a long-term advantageous arm from a long-term disadvantageous arm differing in frequency and amount of sugar pellets as well as unpalatable but not uneatable quinine-treated sugar pellets. We also used a T-maze discrimination procedure

The influence of tobacco consumption on the relationship between schizotypy and hemispheric asymmetry.

Tobacco use is positively associated with severity of symptoms along the schizophrenia spectrum. Accordingly it could be argued that neuropsychological performance, formerly thought to be modulated by schizotypy, is actually modulated by drug use or an interaction of drug use and schizotypy. We tested whether habitual cigarette smokers as compared to non-smokers would show a neuropsychological profile similar to that observed along the schizophrenia spectrum and, if so, whether smoking status or nicotine dependence would be more significant modulators of behavior than schizotypy. Because hemis

Shifts in attention biases in response to acute pain induction: examination of a model of "conversion" among repressors.

Unlike most people, those who are characterized by a repressive coping style report high levels of physical (sensory) pain but low levels of emotional distress (affective pain), which is a discrepancy that may suggest a "conversion" process. In two studies, we tested an attention allocation model, proposing that repressors direct attention away from threatening negative affective information and toward nonthreatening physical pain information during emotionally arousing (painful) situations. In Study 1, 84 participants underwent a cold pressor and then recovered. Repressors reported greater pa
