Prevention of Hypothermia in the Aftermath of Natural Disasters in Areas at Risk of Avalanches, Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Floods.

Throughout history, accidental hypothermia has accompanied natural disasters in cold, temperate, and even subtropical regions. We conducted a non-systematic review of the causes and means of preventing accidental hypothermia after natural disasters caused by avalanches, earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods. Before a disaster occurs, preventive measures are required, such as accurate disaster risk analysis for given areas, hazard mapping and warning, protecting existing structures within hazard zones to the greatest extent possible, building structures outside hazard zones, and organising rapid an

A Case of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation With Rapid Ventricular Response Due to Iatrogenic Hypothermia.

Hypothermia is an involuntary fall in body temperature, usually below 35°C. Hypothermia is a common condition, especially in frigid zones. However, it should not be forgotten that it can also occur in temperate climates or for iatrogenic reasons. Hypothermia is associated with seriously severe arrhythmias, particularly ventricular fibrillation, and there are many reports of prolonged resuscitation in these patient groups. This case report shows that a standard thermometer, either with Emergency Medical Services or in-hospital, will be incapable of reading the temperature if it is less than 34°

Harnessing autophagy to fight SARS-CoV-2: An update in view of recent drug development efforts.

Drug repurposing is an attractive option for identifying new treatment strategies, in particular in extraordinary situations of urgent need such as the current coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. Recently, the World Health Organization announced testing of three drugs as potential Covid-19 therapeutics that are known for their dampening effect on the immune system. Thus, the underlying concept of selecting these drugs is to temper the potentially life-threatening overshooting of the immune system reacting to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. This

The genus Cuscuta (Convolvolaceac): An updated review on indigenous uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacology.

Cuscuta, commonly known as dodder, is a genus of family convolvolaceace. Approximately 170 species of Cuscuta are extensively distributed in temperate and subtropical areas of the world. Species of this genus are widely used as essential constituents in functional foods and traditional medicinal systems. Various parts of many members of Cuscuta have been found efficacious against a variety of diseases. Phytochemical investigations have confirmed presence of biologically active moieties such as flavonoids, alkaloids, lignans, saponines, phenolics, tannins, and fatty acids. Pharmacological studi

Revision of the world Monoctonia Starý, parasitoids of gall aphids: taxonomy, distribution, host range, and phylogeny (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Aphidiinae).

The present paper represents a contribution to the knowledge of the taxonomy of Monoctonia Starý aphid parasitoids obtained using the barcoding region of the mitochondrial COI gene. We discuss the phylogenetic position of the genus within the subtribe Monoctonina, redescribe known species, and describe Monoctonia japonica sp. n. from Japan in the association Pemphigus matsumurai Monzen/Populus maximowiczii. A key for species identification is provided. Also, we review and discuss the host records, origin, and geographical distribution of Monoctonia species. It is hypothesized that the genus Mo

Characterisation of potential novel allergens in the fish parasite Anisakis simplex.

The parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex occurs in fish stocks in temperate seas. A. simplex contamination of fish products is unsavoury and a health concern considering human infection with live larvae (anisakiasis) and allergic reactions to anisakid proteins in seafood. Protein extracts of A. simplex produce complex band patterns in gel electrophoresis and IgE-immunostaining. In the present study potential allergens have been characterised using sera from A. simplex-sensitised patients and proteome data obtained by mass spectrometry. A. simplex proteins were homologous to allergens in other n

Tropical pyomyositis and necrotizing fasciitis.

Pyomyositis is a purulent infection of skeletal muscle that arises from hematogenous spread, usually with abscess formation. Necrotizing fasciitis is a more severe, rapidly progressive infection involving the superficial and deep fascia with necrosis and fluid collections that can be life threatening if left untreated. Both conditions may coexist, and concomitant cellulitis is often seen. A high incidence of these diseases occurs in the tropics, but they are increasingly being seen in temperate countries, due in part to their association with immunodeficiency conditions such as human immunodef

Pulmonary Zygomycosis caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Zygomycosis is an invasive mycotic disease caused by fungi of the class Zygomycetes. Infections caused by zygomycetes, are known for their difficulty of diagnosis and treatment. Cunninghamella bertholletiae (Cb), is a saprobic fungus commonly found in the soil of temperate climates. Pulmonary infections caused by Cb are being identified with increasing frequency among patients on immunosuppressive therapy, and these infections usually have a fatal outcome. We present a rare case of pulmonary zygomycosis caused by Cb in a 10 year old male child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In spite of int

The SaPIs: mobile pathogenicity islands of Staphylococcus.

The SaPIs are 15- to 17-kb mobile pathogenicity islands in staphylococci. They usually carry two or more superantigens and are responsible for most superantigen-related human diseases, especially staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome. SaPIs are extremely common in Staphylococcus aureus, with all but one of the sequenced genomes containing one or more. The SaPIs have a highly conserved overall genome organization, parallel to that of typical temperate phages. Each occupies a specific chromosomal site from which it is induced to excise and replicate by one or more specific staphylococcal phages. F

Circumambulatory rearrangement with characteristics of a 2:1 covalent molecular bevel gear.

anti-W(CO)(5)-complexed 9-methyl-9-phosphabicyclo[6.1.0]nonatriene represents a covalently interlocked molecular bevel gear. Correlated movement of the phosphorus atom and the eight-membered ring by way of a "walk" rearrangement makes gear slippage impossible. The gearing motion is transferred to the four-toothed W(CO)(5) propeller connected to the rotating phosphorus atom, enabling a gearing ratio of 2:1 according to B3LYP and Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics calculations. Methyl substitution of the eight-membered ring tempers the gearing process, with the PMeW(CO)(5) entity passing the subs

[Human alveolar echinococcosis: an emerging zoonosis in Hungary and Europe].

Human alveolar echinococcosis, caused by the metacestode stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, is one of the most dangerous zoonoses in the temperate and arctic areas of northern hemisphere. The mortality of the disease exceeds 95% in untreated or inadequately treated patients. In the past three decades, the spread of this parasite was observed in Europe as a consequence of human interventions resulting in the population size increase of foxes. The authors demonstrated the presence of E. multilocularis in foxes in all northern counties of Hungary and the existence of hyperendemic regions in th

The decision to salvage or amputate a severely injured limb.

The decision to salvage or amputate a severely injured limb is one of the most difficult an orthopaedic surgeon may face. The inclination to undertake heroic measures to save the limb should be tempered by the realization that doing so may lead to repeated hospitalizations, extensive complications, and a poor functional outcome. Several factors must be considered, including objective elements related to the patient's injury and physical condition and subjective considerations related to the patient's psychologic, social, and economic status. We present a framework, in the context of a case stu

Treatment of visceral leishmaniasis in children with liposomal amphotericin B.

We used liposomal amphotericin B as first-choice treatment of visceral leishmaniasis in 106 immunocompetent children who acquired the infection in a temperate region of southern Europe (Italy) where Leishmania infantum visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. The aim of the study was to identify the minimum total dose of liposomal amphotericin B needed to cure the infection in children and reduce the period of hospitalization. We conclude that the optimal regimen in immunocompetent children with L. infantum visceral leishmaniasis to be a total dose of 18 mg/kg of liposomal amphotericin B (3 mg/kg pe

"Fever in the Hand".

A 14-year-old female adolescent was being treated for malnutrition secondary to anorexia nervosa. She complained of severe "shooting" pain, swelling, and color and temperature changes in her left (dominant) hand. She had recently suffered a fall during a hockey game and pounded on the table during a "temper tantrum." On exam, the left hand was cyanotic, edematous, and cold, with severe hyperesthesia. A bone scan showed marked reduction in flow to the left hand. She underwent eight sympathetic ganglion blocks resulting in transitory Horner's syndrome. Favorable plethysmographic changes occurred

Preliminary report on the development of a disease-specific instrument for assessing quality of life of adults with growth hormone deficiency.

It is notable that many of the feelings described by the people in the sample are similar to those experienced at times by people who do not suffer from GHD, that is, lapses of memory, feeling drained of energy, loss of temper, loss of motivation, difficulty in concentrating, forgetfulness and having a tendency to gain weight. Adults with GHD, however, appear to suffer these problems more frequently and to a more extreme degree than other people. It is clear that the range of problems that afflict people with GHD is great, and that the repercussions affect virtually all aspects of their lives.

[Colonic amebiasis due to venereal transmission. Apropos of 2 cases].

Intestinal amebiasis is an ubiquitous disease which is hyperendemic among high promiscuity homosexual males living under temperate climates. Sexual behaviour, especially oroanal contacts which are common in this population, as well as the multiplicity and sometimes anonymity of partners are responsible for this high prevalence. Individual prophylaxis involves local hygiene before intercourse and a decrease in the number of sexual contacts with different partners. Community prophylaxis is essential and consists in information of general practitioners and "gays" about the different means of tran

Rheumatic fever in Nigerian children. A prospective study of 66 patients.

Sixty-six Nigerian children with rheumatic fever were studied between 1975 and 1979. Equal numbers of patients had acute and chronic disease. Carditis was the most common major manifestation, being present in 98% of the cases, whereas subcutaneous nodules, erythema marginatum, and chorea were relatively rare. Twelve patients died within two years of the disease's appearance and eight have become unavailable for follow-up. Our findings resemble those from other tropical countries, in contrast with results from temperate countries: rheumatic fever manifests differently and rheumatic carditis run

[Perinatal transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria].

Two weeks after leaving Nigeria for temperate zones and a few hours after giving birth to twins, a nigerian mother suffered an acute attack of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum accompanied by cerebral, renal and hematolgical complications. Both infants were apparently healthy at birth, and no parasites were found on peripheral blood smears. Both placentas were macroscopically normal. At two months of age the second infant, a boy, developed non-febrile hemolytic anemia due to Plasmodium falciparum. The clinical picture and pathogenic mechanisms of perinatal malaria are discussed. Experiences of everyday life in men with alcohol dependency--a qualitative study.

The aim of the present study is to describe and understand the meaning of living with alcohol dependency (AD) as a man. Studies point out a high prevalence of AD in men and the reasons for, and consequences of, that are complex. However, today there is a lack of knowledge about men's lived experiences of having AD. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 alcohol dependent men and analyzed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. In the comprehensive understanding, findings from the naïve understanding and the structural analysis were interpreted with help from both gender and caring t
