Impact of a new vaccine clinic on hepatitis B vaccine completion and immunological response rates in an HIV-positive cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus vaccination (HBVV) in the HIV-infected population has poor reported completion rates and immunological response rates. At our HIV clinic, we established a vaccine clinic to improve HBVV outcomes using interventions such as SMS text reminders and double-dose (DD) HBVV for standard-dose non-responders (SD NRs). METHODS: A five-year (2003-2008) retrospective review of the completion rates and immunological response rates for HBVV after the establishment of the dedicated vaccine clinic was conducted. Statistical significance was assumed at p<0.05, and the analysis

International Menopause Society (IMS) recommendations and key messages on women's midlife health and menopause.

Following a rigorous systematic review of the literature, the International Menopause Society (IMS) has produced detailed new recommendations and key messages on women’s midlife health, menopause and menopause hormone therapy (MHT) to help guide healthcare professionals to optimize their support and guidance to women at this critical stage of life. The term MHT has been used to cover therapies including estrogens, progestogens, gonadomimetics and combined regimens. This guidance provides a summary of the recommendations and key messages generated from the systematic review process. The longer

ChatBCI-Assist: An Intent-Based P300 Speller With A Locally Deployed LLM and Adaptive Stopping Strategy Enabling Record Online Spelling Performance.

P300-based speller brain computer interfaces (BCIs) provide promising communication solutions for individuals with severe motor impairments, such as those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, existing P300 spellers are constrained by slow typing speed and limited efficiency. Here, we present ChatBCI-Assist, an intent-based P300 speller that integrates a locally deployed large language model (LLM), fine-tuned for the task at hand, and a graphical user interface (GUI) designed for efficient message composition, while incorporating an adaptive stopping strategy for key selection, to

Are public preferences over health distributions guided by principles of distribution? A social choice experiment.

OBJECTIVES: Policymakers must decide how to distribute limited healthcare resources and may wish to draw upon public preferences to identify whom to prioritise. However, little is known about the reasons underlying these preferences. The aim of this study is to examine public preferences over health distributions and the extent to which the reasons underlying them reflect one of the following principles of distribution: equality, need, responsibility, or efficiency. METHODS: In an online experiment administered among members of the general public in the United Kingdom, respondents (n = 648) d

Using Innovation to Address Adolescent and Young Adult Health Disparities in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Design of the Technology Enhanced Community Health Precision Nursing (TECH-PN) Trial.

New approaches to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) care among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) that optimize self-care and personalize treatment are warranted to address age and racial-ethnic PID-related health disparities. Here we describe the 13-month preliminary feasibility and acceptability outcomes of recruitment, retention, and intervention delivery for Technology Enhanced Community Health Precision Nursing (TECH-PN) randomized controlled trial. Urban AYAs 13-25 years assigned female sex at birth with acute mild-moderate PID provided baseline and follow-up interview data and vaginal

Strategies to improve adherence and acceptability of hormonal methods of contraception.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, hormonal contraceptives are among the most popular reversible contraceptives. Despite their high theoretical effectiveness, typical use results in much lower effectiveness. In large part, this disparity reflects difficulties in adherence to the contraceptive regimen and low rates for long-term continuation. OBJECTIVES: The intent was to determine the effectiveness of ancillary counseling techniques to improve adherence to, and continuation of, hormonal methods of contraception. SEARCH METHODS: Through August 2013, we searched computerized databases for randomized contr

HIV Care Initiation: A Teachable Moment for Smoking Cessation?

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use among persons living with HIV represents an important risk factor for poor treatment outcomes, morbidity, and mortality. Thus, efforts designed to inform the development of appropriate smoking cessation programs for this population remains a public health priority. To address this need, a study was conducted to longitudinally assess the relationship between intention to quit smoking and cessation over the 12-month period following initiation of HIV care. METHODS: Patients initiating HIV care at a large inner city safety net clinic were enrolled (n = 378) in a 12-mont

Examining Community Preferences for Adaption and Dissemination of an Efficacious Brief Intervention on Alcohol Use and Sexual Behavior.

Compared to other age groups, 18- to 25-year olds (young adults) are more likely to engage in heavy alcohol use and inconsistent contraceptive use, increasing their susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy. The Studying Alcohol and Related Risks (STARR) intervention was efficacious in reducing young adult alcohol-related risky sexual behavior, including reducing the number of casual sexual partners and alcohol use prior to sex. We conducted a qualitative study to guide the adaptation of the STARR intervention to include additional content on contracepti

Nudging towards COVID-19 and influenza vaccination uptake in medically at-risk children: EPIC study protocol of randomised controlled trials in Australian paediatric outpatient clinics.

INTRODUCTION: Children with chronic medical diseases are at an unacceptable risk of hospitalisation and death from influenza and SARS-CoV-2 infections. Over the past two decades, behavioural scientists have learnt how to design non-coercive 'nudge' interventions to encourage positive health behaviours. Our study aims to evaluate the impact of multicomponent nudge interventions on the uptake of COVID-19 and influenza vaccines in medically at-risk children. METHODS AND ANALYSES: Two separate randomised controlled trials (RCTs), each with 1038 children, will enrol a total of approximately 2076 c
