An angioleiomyoma was excised from the palatine tonsil in a 30-year-old woman who complained of a painless swelling in the region of the tonsil. The mucosa covering the lesion showed prominent dilated blood vessels, necessitating vascular laboratory investigations to exclude any possibility of an aneurysm arising from the carotid system. A 69-year-old woman presented with a one-year history of dysphagia and a hard overgrowth of the right palatine tonsil visible in oral examination. Computerized Tomography scan showed a big calcified lesion inside the tonsil not seen in a pharyngoscopy. Tonsillectomy was performed and a giant tonsillolith was found inside the resected piece. The calculus was 3 x 2 x 2.3 cm and with an irregular-pyramidal shape. Normal tonsillar tissue with many colonies of Actionomyces inside the tonsillar crypts was the definitive pathological feature.

Metastasis to the oral cavity from cutaneous melanoma is rare: fewer than 30 cases of metastatic melanoma to the palatine tonsil have been reported. Tonsil metastasis is haematogenously disseminated and therefore usually has a poor prognosis. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare form of plasma cell dyscrasia, in which plasmacell tumours arise outside the bone marrow. The tumor may arise in any part of the body but the vast majority occur in head and neck, primary in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses or upper airway. The paper considers compartment structure of the tonsils reflecting cooperative interactions of the cells in immune response. A special emphasis is laid on the lymphoepithelial relations at the level of criptal epithelium the area of which serves as an immunoregulatory compartment of the palatine tonsils. Similarity of the regions of lymphoepithelial symbiosis in the zone of the criptal epithelium and lymphoepithelial pattern in the thymus is discussed as well as the role of the palatine tonsils as a secondary organ of immunogenesis in the general hierarchy of the immune system.

Trypan blue and Indian ink made in Fuzhou as vital staining dyes were injected into the abdominal cavities of rabbits. Nine days later, the tonsil, thymus, spleen and lymph nodes were examined.
