Biological width (BW) is the distance established from the junctional epithelium and connective tissue attachment to the root surface of a tooth. It acts as a natural seal protecting the tooth from infections and diseases. The normal dimension of it is 2.04 mm on average. A periodontal probe is used to determine BW in routine clinical practice. Various methods are available for the determination of BW. A diagnosis of BW violation is asserted when the distance is found to be less than 2 mm at single or multiple locations. Gingival health is of utmost importance when considering the long-term he

Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases that humans face during their lifetime. Streptococcus mutans is one of the most critical factors of early tooth decay. These bacteria may produce biofilms in the mouth, which are more resistant to antimicrobial agents. Streptococcus mutans may also demineralize tooth enamel by producing lactic acid. In this study, the effect of nanoliposomes containing lactoferrin at three different concentrations (1·5, 3 and 6 mg ml-1 ) on the biofilm formed by S. mutans was investigated. Nanoliposomes were prepared using the thin-layer hydration method. An activ

Risk factors for dementia include cardiovascular disease, smoking, and diabetes, which also are linked to compromised oral health and periodontal disease. Tooth loss, the hallmark of compromised oral health, is of interest for its systemic effects, including potential impacts on cognitive function. To evaluate tooth loss as a prognostic indicator in dementia, we conducted a register-based cohort study to assess associations of compromised oral health, defined by tooth loss, with mortality risk and progression of cognitive decline. The study population, obtained from linked Swedish nationwide h

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease has been associated with tooth loss and reported as more prevalent among people with diabetes than among those without diabetes. Having an annual dental examination is a national goal of Healthy People 2010. Our objective was to examine whether an association exists between diabetes and tooth loss among a population reporting an annual dental visit.
METHODS: We used data from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to examine the association between self-reported diabetes and tooth removal due to decay or periodontal disease among 155,280 responde

Oral and general health is compromised by irreversible dental problems, including dental caries, periodontal disease and tooth injury. Regenerative therapy for tooth tissue repair and whole-tooth replacement is currently considered a novel therapeutic concept with the potential for the full recovery of tooth function. Several types of stem cells and cell-activating cytokines have been identified in oral tissues. These cells are thought to be candidate cell sources for tooth tissue regenerative therapies because they have the ability to differentiate into tooth tissues in vitro and in vivo. Who

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence has indicated a possible association between oral and gastrointestinal (orodigestive) cancers and periodontal disease or tooth loss. However, the evidence remains contradictory. This study investigated whether tooth loss, which is indicative of poor oral health and a potential source of oral infections, is associated with death from orodigestive cancer.
METHODS: The study included 656 subjects in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan, who were 80 years old at baseline in 1998. All subjects underwent oral clinical examination and answered a questionnaire to determine

Tooth enamel is the outer covering of tooth crowns, the hardest material in the mammalian body, yet fracture resistant. The extremely high content of 95 wt% calcium phosphate in healthy adult teeth is achieved through mineralization of a proteinaceous matrix that changes in abundance and composition. Enamel-specific proteins and proteases are known to be critical for proper enamel formation. Recent proteomics analyses revealed many other proteins with their roles in enamel formation yet to be unraveled. Although the exact protein composition of healthy tooth enamel is still unknown, it is appa

Bisphosphonates are used in the treatment of various diseases which are associated with a disturbance of the balance between bone apposition and degradation. The most important complication of bisphosphonate use is osteonecrosis of the jaw. Certain components of an orthodontic treatment plan, such as the extraction of 1 or more teeth, are important risk factors in developing this complication. In addition to the desired effects on the bone metabolism, bisphosphonates may delay tooth eruption and inhibit or block orthodontic tooth movement. Nevertheless, case studies suggest that orthodontic tr

Oral diseases concern almost every individual and are a serious health risk to the population. The restorative treatment of tooth and jaw defects is an important means to achieve oral function and support the appearance of the contour. Based on the principle of "learning from the nature", Deng Xuliang's group of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology has proposed a new concept of "microstructural biomimetic design and tissue adaptation of tooth/jaw materials" to address the worldwide problems of difficulty in treating dentine hypersensitivity, poor prognosis of restoration of too
