NETs Are Double-Edged Swords with the Potential to Aggravate or Resolve Periodontal Inflammation.

Periodontitis is a general term for diseases characterised by inflammatory destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, gradual destruction of t … periodontitis progression ends with almost complete loss of the periodontal ligament and subsequent tooth loss. Thus, NETs help to maintain periodontal health, and their dysregulation, either insufficiency or surplus, causes heavy periodontal pathology and edentulism.

A family with autosomal dominant mutilating neuropathy not linked to either Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2B (CMT2B) or hereditary sensory neuropathy type I (HSN I) loci.

Sensory loss and ulcero-mutilating features have been observed in hereditary sensory neuropathy type I and in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type IIB, also referred as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2B. To date two loci associated with ulcero-mutilating neuropathy have been described: CMT2B at 3q13-q22 and HSN I at 9q22.1-q22.3. We performed linkage analysis with chromosomal markers representing the hereditary sensory neuropathy type I and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2B loci on an Italian family with a severe distal sensory loss leading to an ulcero-mutilating peripheral neurop

Sensory nerve regulates progenitor cells via FGF-SHH axis in tooth root morphogenesis.

Nerves play important roles in organ development and tissue homeostasis. Stem/progenitor cells differentiate into different cell lineages responsible for building the craniofacial organs. The mechanism by which nerves regulate stem/progenitor cell behavior in organ morphogenesis has not yet been comprehensively explored. Here, we use tooth root development in mouse as a model to investigate how sensory nerves regulate organogenesis. We show that sensory nerve fibers are enriched in the dental papilla at the initiation of tooth root development. Through single cell RNA-sequencing analysis of th

Stem cell-driven biomedical technologies for tooth regeneration: engineering scaffolds, organoid models, and molecular targeted strategies.

Tooth loss remains a major unmet clinical challenge, and current prosthetic approaches cannot restore the biological complexity, sensory function, or regenerative capacity of natural teeth. Recent progress in stem cell biology, developmental engineering, and regenerative biomaterials has opened new possibilities for biological tooth regeneration. This review integrates advances across three major research domains that together define the current landscape of translational regenerative dentistry. First, we discuss stem cell-based, scaffold-guided strategies for tooth regeneration. These approac…

Clinical Report of the Immediate Placement Implants in Patients Aged 80 and Over: Five Cases and a Short Review.

With the population aging, the proportion of elderly individuals is expected to increase, and the proportion of individuals over 80 is also likely to increase. Given that the population is aging and life expectancy is increasing, elderly patients who have lost their teeth will also increase. Impaired masticatory function caused by tooth loss is a risk factor for cognitive decline and frailty, and neglecting to treat tooth loss is a critical issue. In this report, 5 patients over 80 requested dental implants for new missing teeth and underwent immediate implant placement. All patients were trea…

A review of localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP): II. Clinical trials and treatment guidelines.

Localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) causes severe alveolar bone loss and early tooth loss in adolescents and young adults. If it is not appropriately treated as an infection in association with Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, treatment failure is likely. This review of clinical trials of treatment of LJP uses those trials to construct guidelines for LJP treatment.

Surgical and orthodontic treatment after incidental radiographic discovery of a severely infraoccluded primary molar.

Dentoalveolar ankylosis, the fusion of a tooth with the alveolar bone, is often associated with primary molars and is the main cause of infraocclusion. This report describes an uncommon case of a severely infraoccluded primary first molar associated with loss of space in the maxilla. After anamnesis and a clinical examination, absence of the primary maxillary left first molar was observed. Periapical radiographs revealed a primary molar completely submerged under the gingiva. Cone beam computed tomography was performed to determine the proximity of the ankylosed tooth to the germ of the perman

Effects of chronic isoproterenol treatment or submandibular and sublingual ablation on microflora of mouse tooth surfaces.

BALB/cA mice were examined for the effects of chronic isoproterenol treatment or submandibular-sublingual gland ablation on the natural patterns of oral bacterial colonization on tooth surfaces. Indigenous microflora on the tooth surfaces of BALB/cA mice was relatively simple. The predominant bacterial groups were Enterobacteriaceae (45.9%), enterococci (29.4%) and staphylococci (15.7%). Isoproterenol, which resulted in the induced synthesis of proline-rich proteins, caused a decrease in the total cultivable bacteria on the tooth surfaces. The proportion of Enterobacteriaceae in the isoprotere

Preventive implantations.

Preventive implantology is concerned with the preservation of the alveolar ridge of the (edentulous) jaw. Maintaining the volume of the alveolar ridge is a major problem in the prevention of oral disease. Loss of teeth and tooth roots leads to resorption of residual ridges. This being so, it is a logical approach to substitute artificial analogues for lost tooth roots. Hydroxyapatite implants have been studied as submerged tooth root substitutes and shown to maintain the bulk of the alveolar ridge. A drawback of the implants is that the ridge maintenance depends solely on the physical presence

Long-term clinical benefits of periodontal interventions in strict supportive periodontal care: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis requires long-term management to prevent recurrence and tooth loss. While active periodontal therapy (APT) aims to reduce probing pocket depth (PPD) and improve clinical attachment level (CAL), strict supportive periodontal care (SPC) is essential for maintaining these clinical outcomes. This study systematically reviewed the long-term benefits of APT interventions (test groups) compared to standard control interventions (control groups) in patients undergoing SPC as part of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: A systematic search of databases and journals i…

Efficacy of the application of leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) on alveolar ridge preservation. A randomized controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is a well-defined treatment performed to reduce bone dimensional changes occurring during the healing of post-extraction sockets to allow for adequate implant placement. Leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) has been showing to potentially promote bone and tissue regeneration during wound healing. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate its efficacy for ARP when applied to fresh extraction sockets, in comparison with spontaneous healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with hopeless non-molar teeth were treated. After r
