Comparison of efficacy and safety between gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy for primary open-angle glaucoma treatment: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Trabeculectomy (TRAB) traditionally has been the gold-standard surgical treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), while gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) is an emerging minimally invasive surgery used for the treatment of various open-angle glaucoma (OAG) types. In this study, we aimed to compare the efficacy and safety between GATT and TRAB for the treatment of POAG. METHODS: This cohort study included eyes with POAG that underwent a single GATT (30 eyes) or TRAB (34 eyes). Follow-up was conducted at 1 day, 1 week, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperat…

Comparison of Baerveldt 101-350 Glaucoma Implant (BGI) versus Trabeculectomy with ExPress™ Shunt for the Treatment of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma.

Importance: Trabeculectomy is very effective in lowering intraocular pressure for the treatment of glaucoma, but it carries with it possible complications and failure. The ExPress shunt (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, TX, USA) is an adjunctive device that can be used at the time of trabeculectomy to create an external fistuliztion. An alternative established and highly efficacious technique is the implantation of a glaucoma drainage device for sustained intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering. Specifically, evidence has established the Baerveldt 101-350 glaucoma implant (BGI) to have the best sus…

Gene therapy using p21WAF-1/Cip-1 to modulate wound healing after glaucoma trabeculectomy surgery in a primate model of ocular hypertension.

Glaucoma is a common eye disease associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Lowering IOP is the only acceptable therapy for glaucoma and slows progression of the disease. Filtration surgery, which introduces a guarded ostomy through the sclera into the anterior chamber of the eye to allow the escape of aqueous humor, is the most reliable method for effective IOP lowering. Success of this surgery is limited by scarring of the ostomy, so this procedure is often accompanied by the use of antimetabolites, such as mitomycin C (MMC), to block the wound healing response. Although effective

Efficacy and Safety of Manual Small-Incision Cataract Surgery With Trabeculectomy Versus Phacotrabeculectomy in Patients With Glaucoma and Cataract: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The coexistence of two globally leading causes of blindness, glaucoma and cataracts, is common. Combining trabeculectomy with cataract surgery is a common practice while determining the preferred surgical management for patients is a complex consideration. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of two surgical procedures, manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS) combined with trabeculectomy and phacotrabeculectomy. A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, Science Direct, and Cochrane Library published up to March 2023. Ar…
