Pars plana vitrectomies were performed on 43 eyes with traction macular detachment secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Anatomic success, as judged by reattachment of the macula, occurred 28 (65%) eyes. Improved visual acuity occurred in 11 (26%) eyes. Severe complications occurring after vitrectomy included moderate to severe rubeosis iridis diabetica (28%), neovascular glaucoma (16%), vitreous hemorrhage (49%), and phthisis bulbi (14%). Seven patients with severe lumbosacral spondylolisthesis were treated by reduction of the displacement followed by stabilisation by anterior interbody fusion. In the two youngest patients full reduction was achieved by halo-pelvic traction. In the remainder halo-pelvic or femoral traction was combined with a posterior wire reduction device. All patients achieved a sound fusion with complete remission of symptoms.

A retrospective study involving 276 patients with 319 congenitally dislocated hips was undertaken to assess whether premanipulation fraction prevents avascular necrosis. Roentgenographic criteria were utilized and only cases of frank dislocation unassociated with other disorders were included. It was found that in a child less than one year old, premanipulation traction of twenty-one days or more substantially reduces the incidence of avascular necrosis.
