The nanosized structure and relative paramagnetic properties of ZnFe2O4 by the polyol processes and the heat treatment processes.

The controlled synthesis and paramagnetic properties of nanosized Zn-Fe-O oxides have been researched by the polyol and the heat treatment processes designed according to drying, annealing, and sintering from low to high temperatures. The structural changes have led to change weak superparamagnetism of nanosized Zn-Fe-O oxides in the forms of hybrid nanosized ZnO/ZnFe2O4 oxides into paramagnetism of nanosized ZnFe2O4 when the as-prepared samples of both ZnO and ZnFe2O4 oxides were isothermally annealed and sintered from low temperature at about 60 °C to high temperature at 950 °C for 2 h durin

Forcing substitution of tantalum by copper in 1T-TaS2: synthesis, structure and electronic properties of 1T-Cu x Ta1-x S2.

We investigated the compound 1T-Cu x Ta1-x S2 with respect to its synthesis, homogeneity range, structure and electronic properties. The average structure of 1T-Cu x Ta1-x S2 resembles that of the high-temperature phase of the layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS2 in which tantalum is partially substituted by copper. 1T-Cu x Ta1-x S2 readily decomposes at elevated temperatures and can only be prepared and stabilized by a sufficiently high amount of sulfur excess. XPS and NEXAFS measurements reveal that copper has the oxidation state  +I in 1T-Cu x Ta1-x S2, which is supported by quan

Multi-component dissolved gas dynamics as early warning indicators for algal bloom development in the three gorges reservoir.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) threaten global freshwater ecosystems, yet reliable early warning indicators remain elusive, as traditional nutrient and temperature models often fail to capture the metabolic transition to explosive proliferation. This study investigates multi-component dissolved gas dynamics (O₂, CO₂, N₂, Ar, and TDG) as novel early warning indicators that directly reflect algal physiological activity rather than static environmental conditions, thereby bridging the gap between favorable conditions and bloom realization. We conducted continuous in-situ monitoring in the Pengxi Riv

Mott state of flat bands in a 2D metal-organic Kagome framework.

Mott states of flat bands (FBs), as a representative strong correlation effect, have recently attracted much attention. However, observation … of dI/dV maps between the LHB and UHB. Furthermore, temperature-dependent measurements show a Mott transition temperature of ∼15 K, at which the Mott gap closes. By deposition of K atoms, the gap size is seen to be reduced in the electron-doped framework, which indicates the filling of the correlated Mott states distinguishable from a trivial band insulator. Also, an i …

Synthesis, Study, and Application of Pd(II) Hydrazone Complexes as the Emissive Components of Single-Layer Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells.

For the first time, square planar Pd(II) complexes of hydrazone ligands have been investigated as the emissive components of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The neutral transition metal complex, [Pd(L1)2]·2CH3OH (1), (HL1 = (E)-N'-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)isonicotinhydrazide), was prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1 displays quasireversible redox properties and is emissive at room temperature in solution with a λmax of 590 nm. As a result, it was subsequently employed as the emissive material of a single-layer LEC with configuration FTO/1/Ga/In, where studies

Reconciling in vivo and in vitro kinetics of the polymorphic transformation in zirconia-toughened alumina for hip joints: II. Theory.

In this paper, an updated analytical model for the kinetics of the tetragonal to monoclinic (t→m) polymorphic transformation in ZTA composites for hip joints is proposed and discussed. The model builds upon the so-called Mehl-Avrami-Johnson (MAJ) description of transformation kinetics, which combines two overlapping processes: nucleation of monoclinic sites, and their successive growth. Dependencies on two specific factors are introduced in the model, namely the initial fraction of monoclinic polymorph as received from the manufacturer, and the presence of different types of transition-metal s

Anchoring transitions in thin liquid crystal films as seen from a mean-force potentials approach.

Statistical mechanical theory based on the concept of mean-force potentials is used to describe anchoring transitions in a liquid-crystal system near a solid surface. This approach took into account not only the two-particle correlations between the nearest and next-nearest neighbors, but also the surface-attractive interactions. Calculations were performed for a cubic close packing with the Gay-Berne intermolecular potential interaction and with a (9-3)-like orientation-dependent molecule-wall interaction. Our calculations have shown that the number of surface layers to be taken into account

A Coordinating Small Organic Molecule with Tunable Lower Critical Solution Temperature for Efficient Management of Solar Radiation.

Structurally well-defined small molecules with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior offer enormous prospects for fine-tuning their phase transition properties to be "on-demand" applied in the specific scene but are still underexplored. Herein, a novel amphiphilic small LCST molecule is rationally designed and synthesized. The molecule, namely TG, features a conjugation of multiple short ethylene glycol (EG) chains with the functional coordinating terpyridine (Tpy) moiety. The molecule TG demonstrates excellent LCST behavior down to 0.05 × 10-3 m in a water solution. And a cloud

Application of a new designed high resolution melting analysis for mycobacterial species identification.

The Non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) isolates should be distinguished from tuberculosis and identified at the species level for choosing an appropriate treatment plan. In this study, two molecular methods were used to differentiate NTM species, including a new designed High Resolution Melting (HRM) and Multilocus Sequence Analysis (MLSA). Seventy-five mycobacterial isolates were evaluated by sequencing four genes ( MLSA) and a HRM assay specifically targeting atpE was designed to rapidly and accurately identify and differentiate mycobacterium species. Out of 70 NTM isolates, 66 (94.3%), 65

1,8-Dimercuri-6-Phenyl-1H-Carbazole as a Monofacial Dinuclear Organometallic Nucleobase.

A C-nucleoside with 6-phenyl-1H-carbazole as the base moiety has been synthesized and incorporated in the middle of an oligonucleotide. Mercuration of this modified residue at positions 1 and 8 gave the first example of an oligonucleotide featuring a monofacial dinuclear organometallic nucleobase. The dimercurated oligonucleotide formed stable duplexes with unmodified oligonucleotides placing either cytosine, guanine, or thymine opposite to the organometallic nucleobase. A highly stabilizing (ΔTm =7.3 °C) HgII -mediated base pair was formed with thymine. According to DFT calculations performed

Synthesis of Glycosidic (β-1''→6, 3' and 4') Site Isomers of Neomycin B and their Effect on RNA and DNA Triplex Stability.

Glycosidic (β-1''→6, 3' and 4') site isomers of neomycin B (i.e., neobiosamine (β-1''→6, 3' and 4') neamines) have been synthesized in a straightforward manner. Peracetylated neomycin azide was used as a common starting material to obtain neobiosamine glycosyl donor and 6, 3',4'-tri-O-acetyl neamine azide that after simple protecting group manipulation was converted to three different glycosyl acceptors (i.e., 5,6,4'-, 5,3',4'- and 5,6,3'-tri-O-acetyl neamine azide). Glycosylation between the neobiosamine glycosyl donor and the neamine-derived acceptors gave the protected pseudo-tetrasaccharid

The thermodynamics of general and local anesthesia.

General anesthetics are known to cause depression of the freezing point of transitions in biomembranes. This is a consequence of ideal mixing of the anesthetic drugs in the membrane fluid phase and exclusion from the solid phase. Such a generic law provides physical justification of the famous Meyer-Overton rule. We show here that general anesthetics, barbiturates, and local anesthetics all display the same effect on melting transitions. Their effect is reversed by hydrostatic pressure. Thus, the thermodynamic behavior of local anesthetics is very similar to that of general anesthetics. We pre

Binary blend of glyceryl monooleate and glyceryl monostearate for magnetically induced thermo-responsive local drug delivery system.

PURPOSE: To develop a novel monoglycerides-based thermal-sensitive drug delivery system, specifically for local intracavitary chemotherapy. METHODS: Lipid matrices containing mixtures of glyceryl monooleate (GMO) and glyceryl monostearate (GMS) were evaluated for their potential application as magnetically induced thermo-responsive local drug delivery systems using a poorly water-soluble model drug, nifedipine (NF). Oleic acid-modified iron oxide (OA-Fe3O4) nanoparticles were embedded into the GMO-GMS matrix for remote activation of the drug release using an alternating magnetic field (AMF).

Absorption spectroscopy.

Absorption spectroscopy is one of the most widely used techniques employed for determining the concentrations of absorbing species (chromophores) in solutions. It is a nondestructive technique which biologists and biochemists and now systems biologists use to quantify the cellular components and characteristic parameters of functional molecules. This quantification is most relevant in the context of systems biology. For creating a quantitative depiction of a metabolic pathway, a number of parameters and variables are important and these need to be determined experimentally. This chapter descri

Rapid UGT1A1 (TA)(n) genotyping by high resolution melting curve analysis for Gilbert's syndrome diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The basis of Gilbert's syndrome is a 70% reduction in bilirubin glucuronidation which, in the Caucasian population, is the result of a homozygous TA insertion into the promoter region of the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) gene (UGT1A128 allele). In addition, homozygous subjects for UGT1A128 genotype may suffer from severe irinotecan toxicity or jaundice during treatment with the protease inhibitor atazanavir. For these reasons it is very important to perform a correct molecular diagnosis. In this study, we describe for the first time a new high resolution melting (HRM) an

Expanded instrument comparison of amplicon DNA melting analysis for mutation scanning and genotyping.

BACKGROUND: Additional instruments have become available since instruments for DNA melting analysis of PCR products for genotyping and mutation scanning were compared. We assessed the performance of these new instruments for genotyping and scanning for mutations. METHODS: A 110-bp fragment of the beta-globin gene including the sickle cell anemia locus (HBB c. 20A>T) was amplified by PCR in the presence of LCGreen Plus or SYBR Green I. Amplicons of 4 different genotypes [wild-type, homozygous, and heterozygous HBB c. 20A>T and double-heterozygote HBB c. (9C>T; 20A>T)] were melted on 7 differen

Spin-Qubit Noise Spectroscopy of Magnetic Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Physics.

We propose using spin-qubit noise magnetometry to probe dynamical signatures of magnetic Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) physics. For a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center coupled to two-dimensional XY magnets, we predict distinctive features in the magnetic noise spectral density in the sub-MHz to GHz frequency range. In the quasi-long-range ordered phase, the spectrum exhibits a temperature-dependent power law characteristic of algebraic spin correlations. Above the transition, the noise reflects the proliferation of free vortices and enables quantitative extraction of the vortex conductivity

High-Resolution Rovibronic Cross Sections of the MgH+ Molecular Cation.

The high-resolution rovibronic line lists of the MgH+ molecular cation are presented in our work. The potential energy curves are calculated by the method of multireference configuration interaction and Davidson correction (MRCI+Q) with the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect. Spectroscopy constants are fitted and the results are in good agreement with experiments, ensuring the accuracy of the electronic structure. On account of potential energy curves and transition dipole moments, the Franck-Condon factors and Einstein coefficients of transition are obtained. These calculations are used to obta

The mechanism of phase transitions and luminescence properties of azide perovskites.

The temperature-dependent IR and Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the phase transitions in Na/K-chromium-azide frameworks with tetramethylammonium (TeMA+) cations, [(CH3)4N]2[NaCr(N3)6] and [(CH3)4N]2[KCr(N3)6], which crystallize in a perovskite-like structure. The phase transition occurring within 310-315 K in both compounds leads to a symmetry change from Pa-3 to Fm-3m and its major contributor is an order-disorder process of the organic cations followed by an adjustment of the azide bridges. The luminescence properties arise from the optically active Cr3+ ions and the studies revea

Radioprotective effects of induced astronaut torpor and advanced propulsion systems during deep space travel.

BACKGROUND: Human metabolic suppression is not a new concept, with 1950s scientific literature and movies demonstrating its potential use for deep space travel (Hock, 1960). An artificially induced state of metabolic suppression in the form of torpor would improve the amount of supplies required and therefore lessen weight and fuel required for missions to Mars and beyond (Choukèr et al., 2019). Transfer habitats for human stasis to Mars have been conceived (Bradford et al., 2018). Evidence suggests that animals, when hibernating, demonstrate relative radioprotection compared to their awake st
