Twelve adults with confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis who failed to respond to repeated skin tests with 250 TU of second-strength purified protein derivative of tuberculin were studied using in vivo and in vitro tests of cell-mediated immunity. Human mononuclear leukocytes generate cell-bound procoagulant activity (LPCA) after incubation with an antigen (mumps or tuberculin) to which the donor was previously sensitized. An inhibitor of coagulation appears to be liberated into the extracellular culture fluid during incubation of leukocytes with the sensitizing antigen. Takayasu arteritis is an inflammatory disease that affects the aorta and its main branches. Its etiology is obscure. Its association with systemic lupus erythematosus has been reported in the English literature in about 20 cases worldwide, and a relationship with a positive tuberculin test, either with or without tuberculosis, has also been mentioned. We report a pediatric patient who presented with renovascular hypertension secondary to Takayasu arteritis associated with a strongly positive tuberculin test and who subsequently developed possible systemic lupus erythematosus 8 months later.

From 1966 to 1973, a total of 30 cases of tuberculous peritonitis were seen in Seattle-King County. Abdominal pain, swelling, and constitutional symptoms were the most frequent initial complaints. Radiographic abnormalities consistent with tuberculosis were present in 25 cases, and pulmonary disease was proven in ten. An initial tuberculin test with intermediate-strength purified protein derivative of tuberculin was negative in 19 of 27 patients. The intraperitoneal injection of Marcol oil was previously reported to result in the depletion of circulating monocytes. In the present paper the first 7 cases in Japan of chronic beryllium disease found in workers employed in a ceramic factory utilizing beryllium have been described. Immunological examinations of these cases showed changes similar to those observed in sarcoidosis, that is, negative tuberculin test and increase in serum gamma globulin and immunoglobulins. The fact that a considerable number of workers in the same factories as the patients showed negative tuberculin reaction may suggest that there may be further cases of chronic beryllium disease among them that are still in a latent period.
