BACKGROUND: Ophthalmomyiasis externa results from infestation of the conjunctiva by the larval or maggot form of Oestrus ovis. It is common in sheep-farming areas, especially in Mediterranean countries.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man was admitted to the ophthalmology outpatient clinic at State Hospital. He complained of a foreign-body sensation. He was living in a city center in Eastern Anatolia of Turkey. The larvae were removed and antibiotic drops and ointment were given to the patient. The larvae were first-instar Oestrus ovis larvae.

Salmonella Typhi infections are important public health problems for the developing countries. In this study we investigated the molecular epidemiology of a suspected well-water borne S. Typhi outbreak occurred in a district of Malatya-Turkey. This outbreak affected 10 patients in two days. Arbitrary primed polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR) based typing showed two clones, one had seven, and the other had three strains, supporting outbreak speculation. By adding chlorine to wells by local municipal authority, the outbreak ended within a very short time (about ten days).

Schistosoma haematobium is one of the important causes of haematuria in some parts of the world. We present a 16-year-old Ghanaian male who applied to our hospital with haematuria. Schistosoma haematobium eggs were found in his urine sediment. The epidemiological and clinical significance of S. haematobium has been discussed in detail because S. haematobium cases are rarely seen and are generally imported in Turkey.

Scabies and pediculosis are ubiquitous, contagious, and debilitating parasitic dermatoses. The tendency of high prevalence of pediculosis and scabies among school and preschool age children has prompted us to conduct a head louse and scabies prevalence survey among preschool nursery children in our district. A school-based, crosssectional study was performed, with 1,134 children chosen for evaluation. All cases were evaluated by physical examination and a detailed, structured questionnaire. Sulphur dioxide and PM10 levels are investigated in Erzurum during the periods of 1990-2000 heating season to assess air pollution level. This is a 3-month prospective study aimed at determining the incidence and causes of home accidents in an Ankara military staff resident with 637 households. The study also determined risk factors in the home environment and the families' need of health education. Of all families, 1.5% were exposed to home accidents and the incidence of home accidents was found to be 0.104/person/years.
