Computed tomographic colography and virtual colonoscopy.

CT colography (CTC) is a powerful new approach to imaging the colorectum and a promising screening tool for the detection of colorectal neoplasia. From data generated by a helical CT scan, CTC uses virtual reality technology to produce highly discriminant two- and three-dimensional images that permit a thorough and minimally invasive evaluation of the entire colorectum. A dynamic CTC display technique from the endoluminal perspective, called cf2virtual colonoscopy,cf1 simulates colonoscopy by "flying" through the three-dimensional colon image. CTC offers potential advantages in diagnostic perf

Macular translocation surgery: computer simulation of visual perception.

BACKGROUND: Macular translocation can be associated with visual improvement, but patients often experience symptoms of confusion or diplopia. There is a high incidence of suppression of the operated or the fellow eye. The aim of this study is to use computer software to examine the pre- and post-operative fundal images, in order to better understand how patients see after macular translocation surgery. METHODS: We created a graphical user interface that allowed a user to identify and record common landmark points in pre- and post-operative fundal images. We used these points to carry out inte

Project planning, training, measurement and sustainment: the successful implementation of voice recognition.

Computerized voice recognition systems (VR) can reduce costs and enhance service. The capital outlay required for conversion to a VR system is significant; therefore, it is incumbent on radiology departments to provide cost and service justifications to administrators. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston implemented VR over a two-year period and achieved annual savings of $530,000 and a 50% decrease in report throughput. Those accomplishments required solid planning and implementation strategies, training and sustainment programs. This article walks through the process, step by step

A Sonomyography-Based Muscle Computer Interface for Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury.

Impairment of hand functions in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) severely disrupts activities of daily living. Recent advances have enabled rehabilitation assisted by robotic devices to augment the residual function of the muscles. Traditionally, electromyography-based muscle activity sensing interfaces have been utilized to sense volitional motor intent to drive robotic assistive devices. However, the dexterity and fidelity of control that can be achieved with electromyography-based control have been limited due to inherent limitations in signal quality. We have developed and tested

Comparing Non-Visual and Visual Guidance Methods for Narrow Field of View Augmented Reality Displays.

Current augmented reality displays still have a very limited field of view compared to the human vision. In order to localize out-of-view objects, researchers have predominantly explored visual guidance approaches to visualize information in the limited (in-view) screen space. Unfortunately, visual conflicts like cluttering or occlusion of information often arise, which can lead to search performance issues and a decreased awareness about the physical environment. In this paper, we compare an innovative non-visual guidance approach based on audio-tactile cues with the state-of-the-art visual g

The same video game in 2D, 3D or virtual reality - How does technology impact game evaluation and brand placements?

Video game technology is changing from 2D to 3D and virtual reality (VR) graphics. In this research, we analyze how an identical video game that is either played in a 2D, stereoscopic 3D or Head-Mounted-Display (HMD) VR version is experienced by the players, and how brands that are placed in the video game are affected. The game related variables, which are analyzed, are presence, attitude towards the video game and arousal while playing the video game. Brand placement related variables are attitude towards the placed brands and memory (recall and recognition) for the placed brands. 237 player

Computer-assisted surgery: The use of stored intraoperative images for accurate restoration of femoral length and rotational alignment after fracture.

Most femoral fractures are now managed with minimally invasive internal fixation. In the absence of formal exposure of the fracture lines, these procedures make heavy use of C-arm fluoroscopy to allow both fracture reduction and placement of implants, at the expense of measurable radiation exposure to both patient and surgeon. Although this technology has been commercially available for over a decade, it has not yet been widely accepted by the Orthopaedic community.

A Modified Approach to Extensive Oromandibular Reconstruction Using Free Fibula Flaps.

In select patients with advanced disease resulting in large composite tissue defects, consideration is often given to multiple flap reconstruction. The authors propose an alternative option. Using virtual surgical planning the authors demonstrate how modest sacrifice in projection translates into a substantial decrease in the volume and surface area of soft tissue needed, in turn maximizing soft tissue coverage with a single fibula free flap. The authors used 3-dimensional virtual surgery to simulate angle-to-angle reconstructions using free fibula flaps. The reference 3-segment reconstruction

Repeatability and Reproducibility of Virtual Subjective Refraction.

PURPOSE: To establish the repeatability and reproducibility of a virtual refraction process using simulated retinal images. METHODS: With simulation software, aberrated images corresponding with each step of the refraction process were calculated following the typical protocol of conventional subjective refraction. Fifty external examiners judged simulated retinal images until the best sphero-cylindrical refraction and the best visual acuity were achieved starting from the aberrometry data of three patients. Data analyses were performed to assess repeatability and reproducibility of the virtu

Hand VR Exergame for Occupational Health Care.

The widespread use and ubiquity of mobile computing technologies such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and portable gaming consoles has led to an increase in musculoskeletal disorders due to overuse, bad posture, repetitive movements, fixed postures and physical de-conditioning caused by low muscular demands while using (and over-using) these devices. In this paper we present the development of a hand motion-based virtual reality-based exergame for occupational health purposes that allows the user to perform simple exercises using a cost-effective non-invasive motion capture device to help ove

Cardiac patients show high interest in technology enabled cardiovascular rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) can slow or reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, uptake of community-based CR is very low. E-cardiology, e-health and technology solutions for physical activity uptake and monitoring have evolved rapidly and have potential in CVD management. However, it is unclear what the current technology usage is of CVD patients, and their needs and interests for technology enabled CR. METHODS: A technology usage questionnaire was developed and completed by patients from a supervised ambulatory CR program and an adult congenital heart di

Evaluation and correction of facial asymmetry in the coronal plane.

Correction of a facial asymmetry, manifest as canting of the occlusal, piriform, or intergonial planes, is a challenging problem requiring accurate preoperative evaluation, planning, and operative execution. A lack of understanding and appreciation for the three-dimensional geometry of the asymmetry may result in undercorrection or incomplete correction of the deformity. Recent advances in virtual three-dimensional planning have provided surgeons with an additional tool to improve the clinical outcomes for patients with facial asymmetries. This report focuses on the basic geometric relationshi

Designing virtual audiences for fear of public speaking training - an observation study on realistic nonverbal behavior.

Virtual Reality technology offers great possibilities for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy of fear of public speaking: Clients can be exposed to virtual fear-triggering stimuli (exposure) and are able to role-play in virtual environments, training social skills to overcome their fear. Usually, prototypical audience behavior (neutral, social and anti-social) serves as stimulus in virtual training sessions, although there is significant lack of theoretical basis on typical audience behavior. The study presented deals with the design of a realistic virtual presentation scenario. An audience (consisti

Novel tools for extraction and validation of disease-related mutations applied to Fabry disease.

Genetic disorders are often caused by nonsynonymous nucleotide changes in one or more genes associated with the disease. Specific amino acid changes, however, can lead to large variability of phenotypic expression. For many genetic disorders this results in an increasing amount of publications describing phenotype-associated mutations in disorder-related genes. Keeping up with this stream of publications is essential for molecular diagnostics and translational research purposes but often impossible due to time constraints: there are simply too many articles to read. To help solve this problem,

Numerical simulations of the 3D virtual model of the human hip joint, using finite element method.

In this paper, we present a three-dimensional mathematical model for a normal hip joint. The three-dimensional finite element model has been constructed based on Computer Tomograph scans of the bones. The obtained 3D model is studied using the finite element method, taking into consideration the real structure of the bone and the mechanical characteristics of cortical and spongy. The FE model of hip joint, the material properties used to simulate the behavior of the cortical and trabecular bone (of femur and coxal bone) and the cartilage, as well as the boundary conditions are presented. Factors affecting performance on a target monitoring task employing an automatic tracker.

The experiments in this paper examined the extent to which performance on a task employing an automatic tracker was similar to performance on tasks employing other types of automation that have been studied more extensively. Automated target tracking is being used in many sensor and navigation systems to improve performance and help the operator cope with increased data loads. With many automated systems these goals are not met. In particular, the operator often misses errors made by the automated system and may report no decrease in workload. Several hypotheses have been offered for the opera
