UNLABELLED: Twenty two patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were examined by nocturnal polysomnography (n-PSG), and the obstructive sites in the upper airway were observed by nasendoscopic diurnal polysomnography using diazepam (n-d-PSGD). The types of apnea were divided into three groups according to the obstructive sites in the upper airway: soft palate apnea, tongue base apnea, and combined type apnea. Among the 22 patients, there were 17 soft palate apneas, 3 tongue base apneas and 2 combined type apneas. All patients underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). Preoperative value

20 cases of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty performed on patients suffering from sleep apnea syndrome have been studied with a pre- and post-operative polysomnographic recording. Eleven patients (55%) responded to this therapy and showed a significative decrease of their post-operative apnea-hypopnea index. An increase of the mean oxygen saturation was noticed during sleep. On the contrary, the sleep quality did not improve. Age, weight, apnea index are not predictive factors influencing the result of UPPP. Even if UPPP has a relatively poor success rate it still should be proposed to patients suffe

A 30-year-old nonatopic woman had experienced a 9-year history of persistent symptoms of supraglottic edema. She had previously undergone epiglottectomy and excision of redundant left arytenoid tissue to improve her breathing and dysphagia. Uvular tissue was removed surgically at our clinic for histopathological examination of the excised tissues. This revealed diffuse infiltration by mast cells, many of which appeared degranulated. Uvular tissue from control patients undergoing uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for obstructive sleep apnea contained significantly fewer mast cells per high power field.…

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder that is frequently treated surgically. Few reports in the literature give objective reports of the effect of such treatment on polysomnographic parameters before and after treatment, although symptomatic improvement is common. This article reviews total sleep time (TST) spent in apnea, number of apneic episodes per hour or sleep apnea index (SAI), and oxygen desaturations in such patients treated with tracheostomy, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPP), and combinations of these. Although improvement is noted in these parameters after UPP, this is not as i

Uvulectomy is carried out by traditional healers of Tanzania. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Muhimbili Medical Centre, University of Dar es Salaam, has regularly treated patients who suffered complications arising from this procedure. In April 1980 the author attended the practice of a traditional healer (mganga) in Dar es Salaam and saw many uvulectomies performed. The procedure is described and its indications and complications reviewed. The study illustrates that knowledge and comprehension of traditional medicine is important for the medical profession in those countries wher

Introduction: The ecto-endodermal boundary in the human oral cavity remains debated. Rather than a distinct line, this transition forms a complex interface, especially in the developing mouth and pharynx. This ambiguity is clinically relevant, as, for example, HPV-induced tumors often arise where ecto- and endoderm meet. The boundary is generally placed at the posterior third of the tongue and behind the uvula, though its developmental basis remains unclear. This review summarizes the literature on the embryological development of the mouth and pharynx to trace origins and interactions of ecto…

A complete examination of the oral cavity is a neglected part of physical examination and is not taught in both undergraduate and postgradua … tongue and the base of the mouth followed by the sixth step, which is the evaluation of the palate, uvula, and tonsils. The final seventh step is the examination of the hard structures in the oral cavity, which includes the teeth, mandible, and the maxilla.

INTRODUCTION: Nerium oleander is a toxic ornamental plant which usually grows in the Mediterranean area. In the past it was used to produce cardiotonic medicine and there are studies on using this plant as an anti-cancer medicine and on its use in alternative medicine for many causes.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our case was of a 36 years old male who came to the emergency department with sore throat and burning feel in the throat following his curious bite of the oleander leaf. He had no trouble of breathing. The physical examination of the mouth showed burn-like lesions and edema of the uvula, oroph…

Acid-sensing ion channels (Asic) are ligand-gated ion channels in the Degenerin/Epithelial Na+ channel (Deg/ENaC) family. Asic proteins are richly expressed in mammalian neurons. Mammals express five Asic genes: Asic1-5. The gene product of Asic5 is an orphan member of the family about which little is known. To investigate Asic5 expression, we created an Asic5 reporter mouse. We find that Asic5 is chiefly expressed in the brain in the cerebellum, specifically in the ventral uvula and nodulus of the vestibulocerebellum. Here, Asic5 is restrictively expressed in a subset of interneurons in the g…

In this paper, we will review the anatomical components of the visuomotor cerebellum in human and, where possible, in non-human primates and discuss their function in relation to those of extracerebellar visuomotor regions with which they are connected. The floccular lobe, the dorsal paraflocculus, the oculomotor vermis, the uvula-nodulus, and the ansiform lobule are more or less independent components of the visuomotor cerebellum that are involved in different corticocerebellar and/or brain stem olivocerebellar loops. The floccular lobe and the oculomotor vermis share different mossy fiber in…
