Effects of sub-inhibitory concentrations of nafcillin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampin on biofilm formation of clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

UNLABELLED: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are often difficult to treat because of their biofilm-forming ability and antimicrobial resistance. We investigated the effects of sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of antibiotics on MRSA biofilm formation. Clinical MRSA isolates were grown with sub-MICs (1/256-1/2 × MICs) of nafcillin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampin. The biofilm biomass was measured using crystal violet staining. Of the 107 MRSA isolates tested, 63 (58.9%) belonged to sequence type 5 (ST5), and 44 (41.1%) belonged to ST72. The MIC50/

Pre-exposure to peracetic acid followed by UV treatment for deactivating vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis through intracellular attack.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a global health threat to aquatic environments and its propagation is a hot topic. Therefore, deactivating antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and removing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from water is crucial for controlling AMR transmission. Peracetic acid (PAA), which is known for its potent oxidizing properties and limited by-product formation, is emerging as a favorable disinfectant for water treatment. In this study, we aimed to assess the efficacy of pre-exposure to PAA followed by UV treatment (PAA-UV/PAA) compared with the simultaneous applicati

The crucial relationship between vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration and therapeutic efficacy against methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci.

The area under the curve (AUC)/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio was used as an indicator of the clinical efficacy of vancomycin. However, the target AUC/MIC has not been set for methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CNS), and the effectiveness of vancomycin in strains with high MIC is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the vancomycin MIC and therapeutic efficacy in patients with MR-CNS bacteremia. The primary outcome was the difference in treatment failure rate when the MR-CNS vancomycin MIC was 1 or 2 µg/mL. The treatment fail

Beyond vancomycin: recent advances in the modification, reengineering, production and discovery of improved glycopeptide antibiotics to tackle multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Glycopeptide antibiotics (GPAs), which include vancomycin and teicoplanin, are important last-resort antibiotics used to treat multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacterial infections. Whilst second-generation GPAs - generated through chemical modification of natural GPAs - have proven successful, the emergence of GPA resistance has underlined the need to develop new members of this compound class. Significant recent advances have been made in GPA research, including gaining an in-depth understanding of their biosynthesis, improving titre in production strains, developing new derivatives via nov
