OBJECTIVES: To describe a unique case of acute vertigo presenting with spontaneous horizontal nystagmus (SHN) and a clinical picture consistent with right acute peripheral vestibular loss (APVL) in which an isolated hypofunction of a horizontal semicircular canal (HSC) permitted to detect a spontaneous canalith jam and treat the patient accordingly.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: A 74-year old woman presented with acute vertigo, left-beating SHN and a clinical picture consistent with right APVL. Nevertheless, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were normal with symmet

OBJECTIVE: To study the feasibility of endolymphatic visualization and the diagnosis of Meniere's disease by applying intratympanic gadolinium administration through the tympanic membrance and three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging (3D-FLAIR MRI). To study the relationship between the endolymphatic hydrops visualized by MRI and audio-vestibular functional tests, such as pure tone audiometry (PTA), electrocochleography (EcoG), caloric test and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP).
METHODS: With a three Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit

AIMS: To characterize and predict otolith dysfunction of the peripheral vestibular system and its effect on balance in people with diabetes mellitus (DM).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included people with DM and peripheral neuropathy (PN), DM without PN, and controls (N = 68). Participant characteristics (e.g., age, HbA1c) including clinical measures of PN were procured. Cervical (saccule pathway) and ocular (utricle pathway) vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing outcomes included interamplitude and absent response counts. The Functional Gait Assessment and activity watch

The selective vulnerability of distinct neuronal structures is a major feature of Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), also known as spinocerebellar ataxia 3 (SCA3). Vestibular dysfunction is known to be a symptom of MJD, but little is known about precisely when the vestibular system becomes impaired. Using a caloric test, we evaluated vestibular function in 2 MJD patients. One developed the initial symptom 1 year before evaluation, and the other 3 years before evaluation. Neither demonstrated a bilateral response in electronystagmography using ice-cold water irrigation, indicating severe vestibular

Vestibular neuritis is one of the most common reasons that someone may experience an episode of acute spontaneous vertigo, with the majority cases impacting only one ear. Cases of bilateral vestibular neuritis are rare and are thought to account for less than 10% of all cases of vestibular neuritis. Skull vibration testing is an efficient means to screen for asymmetry in vestibular function but is still in its infancy in clinical use. The ideal assessment methods and the typical patterns of skull vibration-induced nystagmus are relatively well understood; however, the presentation of skull vib

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide around 400 million people suffer from hearing loss. There is increasing evidence that hearing loss is a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. However, several risk factors for cognition are common in hearing-impaired individuals, including vestibular dysfunction, anxiety, and depression. This study aimed to explore the effect of hearing loss on cognitive functioning in older adults, considering the effects of vestibular function, anxiety, and depression on cognitive performance.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study was performed on 42 subjects with moderate-to-sever

OBJECTIVES: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) can affect vestibular function, which is an important cornerstone for early motor development. This study aims to identify risk factors for early vestibular dysfunction with severe repercussions on the motor outcome.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 169 cCMV-patients with complete vestibular assessment (lateral video Head Impulse Test and cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials) before the age of 18 months (mean 8.9, standard deviation 3.27 months). Motor results using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale were collected in 152 of t

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether patient age or sex was predictive of a bilaterally absent cervical or ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP or oVEMP).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary center.
PATIENTS: Patients presenting with normal vestibular tests (i.e. normal caloric and rotational chair) who underwent cVEMP and/or oVEMP testing. Patients with conductive hearing loss were excluded as were those with unilaterally abnormal VEMP results because they presented with evidence of a possible unilateral vestibular impairment. A total of 895 patients met crite
