Two women (63 and 68 years) presented with primary angiosarcomas of the skin which had developed on an area of chronic lymphoedema after radiosurgical treatment for breast cancer 4 and 13 years earlier. Immunohistochemistry tests formally eliminated epithelial metastasis and produced evidence in favour of lymphatic or capillary vascular proliferation. Endothelial affinity for anti-factor VIII and positive tests for certain markers of intermediary filaments (actin, vimentin) confirmed the vascular and conjunctive tissue origin of the tumours.

This paper describes a rare case of primary pigmented malignant schwannoma arising from the sympathetic trunk in the posterior mediastinum. A 30-year-old woman underwent a thoracoscopic tumor extirpation. A primary pigmented malignant schwannoma was diagnosed histologically. An enlarged pineal gland was observed in a 112-wk-old male Fischer 344 rat from the low-dose treatment group in a 2-yr bioassay. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of the gland were stained with hematoxylin and eosin along with the immunohistochemical biomarkers synaptophysin, placental alkaline phosphatase, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and vimentin. Based on its histomorphological features and on positive staining with synaptophysin, the lesion was diagnosed as a malignant pineal gland parenchymal cell tumor or pineocytoma of incidental origin.

Two surgically removed meningotheliomatous meningiomas with hyaline inclusions or pseudopsammoma bodies were studied. Both meningiomas showed expression of carcinoembryonic antigen and cytokeratin in the cells surrounding the hyaline bodies. There was widespread vimentin and epithelial membrane antigen except in the cells with hyaline inclusions. Clinically both had a severe cerebral edema. We analysed the cytoskeletal proteins and extracellular matrix components of in vitro cultured BMSC both in resting state and after activation with IFN gamma and TNF alpha, using an immunoperoxidase procedure. BMSC expressed fibronectin, alpha-actin, beta-tubulin, vimentin and vinculin while cytokeratinpan, GFAP, neurofilament, desmin and laminin were not expressed. This pattern of expression was not affected by addition of TNF alpha and IFN gamma, but differs from human tonsil stromal cells for laminin expression and alpha-actin localization.

A case of gestational implantation upon a submucosal cellular leiomyoma in a 43-year-old woman is presented. The resulting histologic picture resembled placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT). In immunoperoxidase studies, tumor cells were positive for desmin and vimentin and negative for human placental lactogen and human chorionic gonadotropin, thus supporting a smooth muscle origin. This case demonstrates an unusual histological picture occurring in a setting that might lead to diagnostic confusion and is one in which immunohistochemical evaluation proved to be of great utility.

A 60-year-old woman had a ciliary body tumor that resembled an amelanotic malignant melanoma by clinical examination. The magnetic resonance imaging scan correlated with the clinical diagnosis. Because of apparent rapid growth, her eye was enucleated. However, histopathologic examination revealed a highly vascularized, spindle-cell tumor harboring immunoreactive actin and vimentin. Electron microscopy further supported the diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma with smooth-muscle differentiation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a hemangiopericytoma of the ciliary body.

The 4 cases of malignant xanthogranuloma reported here are peculiar because of their unusual localization in the cervico-facial area and of their good outcome (3 patients are alive without recurrence more than 6 years after chemotherapy and radiotherapy). Besides the histological study, the 4 cases were examined by immunohistochemical methods : vimentin was positive in 20 to 40% of cells and lysozyme in 5 to 15% of cells. In addition, one case was studied by electron microscope which showed the polymorphism of tumoral cells.

The authors presented a case of nasal glioma in an adult man which had performed as nasal polyp. Histopathologic studies confirmed neuroglial tissue--Astrocytoma fibrillare. These tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein as well as for S-100 protein and vimentin. There was no communication between the tumor and the cranial cavity on radiological examination (TC, MRI). Treatment is usually surgical. In this article authors describe a case of a nasal glioma that was removed via a lateral rhinotomy.

A case of malignant tumor developing from myoepithelial cells (malignant myoepithelioma) is presented. The primary focus was located in the region of the left submandibular salivary gland. A relapse and metastases were disclosed in the same salivary gland, in the lung and the left breast. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated positive reactions for S-100 protein, cytokeratins, smooth muscle actin, vimentin, GFAP protein, p53 protein and Ki-67 antigen, and allowed for establishing the final histopathological diagnosis of malignant myoepithelioma.

Cystadenofibromas of the fallopian tube are rare tumors of the female genital tract. These tumors are usually asymptomatic and are found incidentally. The authors present an incidentally found fallopian serous cystadenofibroma in a 48-year-old woman with leiomyoma uteri. The topographic localization of the lesion, histopathologic findings of müllerian-type epithelium, immunophenotypic profile of vimentin-cytokeratin coexpression, and diffuse apical epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) immunoreactivity suggested that the tumor was an embryologic remnant originating from the müllerian duct.

OBJECTIVE: A case of Leydig cell tumor in a cryptorchid testis is described.
METHODS: A 55-year-old man presented with no specific scrotal symptoms. A cryptorchid testis was discovered on physical examination and the patient was submitted to orchidectomy.
RESULTS: A solid, well-circumscribed, round nodule of 0.8 cm in diameter was found in an atrophic testis. The histological examination showed a Leydig cell tumor with crystals of Reinke and immunostaining with vimentin.
CONCLUSION: Leydig cell tumor may be related with cryptorchidism.
